I had three D50/D550 since the early 90s. The last one will stay forever. I studied the design of this thing in-depth. I still can't tell how exactly the outputs produce this beautiful, wonderful, amazing sound. Some are like lullabies and some make me cry, seriously.
Great demo of great patches in a great synthesizer. For the people who wonder where to find the 'Von Kleist" patch. I found it in a bank called BancoR5. I downloaded it from a D50 group at Yahoo. Shimmering Pad is also a patch in this bank.
One of the best synthesizers ever to grace the planet earth. Forever magical. Nothing that came after this is quite the same (pure romplers loose the magic, virtual analogs are different). It was Roland's way of getting around the 'digital problem' combined with their massive analog experience that led to them basically emulating a DCO SuperJX (with more features) but with digital tech + samples/PCM added on top if you wanted them. Also great filters for digital.
This was the first synth i ever bought,i loved it.i kept/played it for about 5,6 years and then sold it as i needed money :-( 2 sounds which are still stuck in my mind from this brilliant synth are "stacatto heaven" and "deep analog strings",2 wonderful sounds. After selling my D-50,many years later i now have a Roland XP-30 which is also very good :-)
This is the first D50 demo I've listened to after watching loads of JD-800 videos and although I haven't the technical knowledge to explain why, this synth definitely sounds like it has the edge to my ears. Having said that, I'm hoping to buy the JD tomorrow. Think I might have to keep an eye out for one of these though.
@Vondur No D-50 isn't 'just' a rompler. It has something akin to a virtual synthesizer engine depending on the mode you choose. To put it simply it's not like a Korg M1 which is 'stuck' with it's PCM. D-50 you can bypass samples (many programmers do) and use structure mode one, which is 2 'hypothetical analog synths' (according to the manual). These synths are not using sampled waveforms but create them electronically - hence D-50 character and warmth.
Craigslist in USA is the best source, I just seen one locally here (San Francisco) for $300. Also, D-50 uses universal multi-tap power transformer inside with taps from 100V (Japan) to 240V (UK, Australia). You can take D-50 from anywhere in the world and all you have to do is to move brown wire to 240V tap, no power adapters needed. Also, the odd 2-prong power socket can be easy replaced to standard 3-prong IEC socket, fits to the same hole. Just don't connect third ground pin to synth chassis.
totally awesome, I actually thought I was listening to a korg x50 but in fact it was the first keyboard i ever bought in 1991. great sounds man, keep it up!!!

Un très bon clavier le Roland D50, que j'ai acheté à sa sortie à l'époque 🎹.
That explains a lot - a mates band had to get rid of their brand new D70 (one of the first ones) as the sound was so clear it just dominated everything. The D50 didn't have that problem.
I know, remember these are/were one of the finest instruments. Even though, they are very old for today's technology, but still there is something that attracts/draws most musicians to it. Your welcome buddy.
Greetings old mate. I feel sorry you didn't scored my "museum mint" condition D-50. It would be in good hands and the piece was from original owner, later revision (those that do not hum) and without a single scratch. I sold it to some rock player and moved to D-550 which love to death. Let me know if you need any more D-50 sounds i think i found another huge batch.
both are killer synthesizer. The difference is the great difference in programing. If you don't understand synthesis completely don't mess with a D X . For guys that know how to use it then they can fully harvest the sound of that jewel!
Beautiful, very beautiful. I just hope that I get my PC back soon from reparation. I have a lot of new ideas and I'll go crazy if I don't record them soon and make a video.
JV-80 and JV-90 can be named the true successors of D-50: true multitimbral with good filters, effects and full array of editing tools. Edit palette is great: take any part and instantly tweak essential parameters (cutoff, resonance, level, pan, etc.) from front panel's 8 sliders, kind of evolition of D-50 joystick. Patch hold feature is great: you can change patches and original one will still sound through as long as there's enough polyphony to support it. Makes sound changes totally seamless!
The Goddess Aphrodite patch is 78 from Sound Source Unlimited Atmospheric Textures and FX. I've got the others somewhere as well but it'll take a while to find them...
@HourglassHumanity they pop up on ebay regularly. it is seriosly worth getting one, I find it a million times more fascinating than I expected. the cristalline lushness is immense, extremely powerful instrument and properly complex architecture to dive into, should u so wish
wonderful, ethereal sounds. i run most of my synths through delay/echo as well-adds the "!" i am thinking of getting a D-50 on the force of this video-thank you.
A synthesizer whose design was blessed by some rare ethereal magic that not many others possess...analog or digital. In both domains you find those few synthesizers that are just "alive" and defy any sort of emulation. This is one.
Most likely because it has warmth of early (noisy) digital mixed with a very unique synthesis engine, most of the pads above are in structure mode 1/2 which uses NO sample (so NOT a rompler). The saw/square waves are created live (digitally not sampled) and fed through some very nice digital TVFs. Short version is D-50 sounds alive while most digital synths after sounded pre-canned/static.
Hm.... i'm really wondering about the sound quality of the D50... Always thought the JD came up with the same and better. But the D-Series really has something special. Thanks for great 30 minutes on your vids!
I got mine since yesterday and i can't put my fingers off of it :D Those pads you're playing there are indeed one of the most prettiest ones i've ever heard. It would be very interesting to find out where you got them from. LOL looks like everyone demands to know :P
@MafiarProductions Yes it is possible and easy. Some midi to USB cables confound thier MIDI IN and MIDI OUT ends. Try switching them around, i.e. put the MIDI IN prong in the D50's MIDI OUT port, Fruity Loops should automatically detect presence of a midi controller.
I have Roland D50, and Roland R8 Drum Machine. I have heard some of Yamaha DX7 and they are pretty good. Yeah, I guess the Mark 2 came out in the late 80's, around the same time as Roland D50.
JD-800 can create more complex sounds and has integrated controls (faders for programming) whereas you would need to buy a dedicated controller for D-50, but D-50 sounds warmer (to me). If you can only get one of them, I would say go for JD-800 (and perhaps get a D550 - rack version of D-50 later).
About 15-20 years ago, all radio tuners started to sound the same. Its because they all had the same chipset. Old synths have an organic sound because each model had an output stage made for it. In the days of DAC chips, you just put an op amp on and bugger the consequences. Make a proper output stage and you have magic. Like a good DAC on hifi.
very nice...i have a V-Synth w/ the D-50 card and it's lovely. only difference is the newer D/A converter; otherwise it's an exact 1:1 port in every way. The only other digital synth I've had that sounds as lush and warm is Supernova2. Grrrreat versatile filter on that one.... but the D is no slouch either!
I remember that the roland piano was back in the 1900's,thats when I have the piano and drums but they have rock music in them,so that 1 day i'll might in a band of rock n roll.P.S those roland instroments are awesome
stunning! what do you control with the upper control stick? and how does this work? these pads remind me of some intelligent drum & bass from the late 90ies. they have such a depth and value... i could listen to them for a year or two maybe.
Wonderful Dreamy Pads. I've had two of these babies, But I had to partwith them, but, I'm after my Third now. Great Demo by the way, not the usual synth piano egoist often found on here thinking their Rick wakeman. Thanks for posting. incredable. LOL .
Alek, So i've got this sounds now on my D50, it's soooo great ! But in your demo which number Reverb you used ? Because on D50 there's many diferent reverbs (REV) and balance to... Thank you for this information Have a good week friend Serge
@tmste First virtual analog? Hmm... =) Well, the same technique that was used in D50 synth partials, was used earlier in Casio CZ-series (with less resolution perhaps). Filtered saw/square waves on D50 is nothing more than a phase distorted (co)sine wave. But don't they sound beautiful?
@fischek Yep, ignore my previous message, i THOUGHT i've found them but it seemed it was another file, and at the same time i saw your PM !!! Anywayz i thank you very much, these are great sounds and hopefully they'll push me write some music, i missed having hardware synths, vst's are fine but such sounds seem only to come out of good ol' hardware....!!!!
One of the Best Synths in this planet
I had three D50/D550 since the early 90s. The last one will stay forever. I studied the design of this thing in-depth. I still can't tell how exactly the outputs produce this beautiful, wonderful, amazing sound. Some are like lullabies and some make me cry, seriously.
Transients are the key -wonderful machine, and really creative minds after the design and patches
How is it possible that these pads are better than a lot of synths on the market today?
because the components are bigger, its basically a tank.
@@tomdwij Quality components, yes...
wonderful roland d50.....for me the best synth of the world :) ciao
Great demo of great patches in a great synthesizer.

100% agree
love my D50, one of the best synth in the world......
WOW, what a sound that is at 6:58, amazing, the D-50 and D-550 rack version have the most ethereal sounds ever!
Still one of my favorite synths of all time. Something about it.
For being around 20 years old, that pads sounds so great!
Feels like they put a lot of work to that machine....
Such ambient sounding. Now its even more acclaimed in my ears. Great demo!
Von Kleist is my favorite out of your demo. This has been the best Roland D 50 demo video i've seen on here yet. Great Job Fischek
better than any other synth I've heard on youtube
ed wright it really is amazing
I love the Roland D-50 synthesizer.
Good job, bro.
What A brilliant demo. No talk, just wonderful dreamy sounds and great playing. Thank you. More please. LOL .
Good work. Good old D50. Legendary. Amazing sounds 🎹🎵🎶🪗🎷🎻🍻🍻👍👍👍
thanks - I love it too :)
Best sounds ever!!!!

Beautiful. I have a D50 multitimbral and with 3 memory banks. That is an expansion made in Germany that requires some soldering.

Nice synth sounds - really showcases the D-50 nicely
Killer patches!!!
Best patches i've heard so far from the D-50

Very relaxing and dreamy. Thanks a lot !

fischek, Still enjoying the sounds you've sent me a few years ago.
Have them in a D-550.
Old module but still sounds good.
thanks - the patch is called "Thank you for this waveform" (7:41)
Best synth in the world? Probably =)
I know, remember these are/were one of the finest instruments. Even though, they are very old for today's technology, but still there is something that attracts/draws most musicians to it. Your welcome buddy.
if you want brand new you can also get the V-Synth XT rack, which includes a genuine D-50 inside.
Greetings old mate. I feel sorry you didn't scored my "museum mint" condition D-50. @oberstfresh thanks - the stick controls the volume balance between the two parts of the patch (partials)

These sound unbelievable good !!!
i was lost in ambient =)

Great Demo, Amazing patches. Just bought my third D50. Thanks for sharing. well done. LOL .
I like D-50, more than the DX-7. Warmer sound, wonderful strings and easier for programming.

Someone needs to start an online petition to demand that Roland re-releases this as a VST
I got mine since yesterday and i can't put my fingers off of it :D

@otherreality Nevermind I found them.Excellent !!!!
Love my D-50 one of my top 3 favourite synths (AN1x, SY77 being the other two)
this looks like the perfect synth to make new age music!
Hi, are these standard presets or have you bought them elsewhere?
Ah, thanks. Haven't used my D-550 in a year or so, need to utilize it again. Great vid by the way...
@kvasin04 That's cos the D70 was a rebadged U series rompler with next to none of the original charm of the D-50. D-50 is unique and great sounding.
Reminds me a bit of Blade Runner around 7 mins. I always loved the sounds of this board.
d 50 is a dream machine...no dought...
great synth roland d50
Le meilleur synthétiseur à l'heure actuelle !😍
Awesome pads! Lovely demo....
Thanks for sharing this.
Just beautiful. How is it that this synth and these patches sound better than new synths in 2022?
Would it be possible to load these patches into the rack version of the D-50? The D-550?
Thanks.
I see no reason why not. They should be identical in functionality, the only difference being that D-550 doesn't have keys.
@@fischek Thank you.
wow, sure the D-50 can do amazing pad sounds.
thanks, currently D50, JD800 and NL2X
I have Roland D50, and Roland R8 Drum Machine. I have heard some of Yamaha DX7 and they are pretty good. Yeah, I guess the Mark 2 came out in the late 80's, around the same time as Roland D50.
The best synth ever. I love the presets you have. You need to make another video with more sounds.HA
I need to get a d50.. Cool video
JD-800 can create more complex sounds and has integrated controls (faders for programming) whereas you would need to buy a dedicated controller for D-50, but D-50 sounds warmer (to me).

omg, simply fabulous!!!

Hi fischek, those presets are so great!
How many hw synths do you own?
@DonSolaris thanks DonSolaris, long time no hear - I surely will - that's a good idea :)
love this sound

Very nice demo. I miss my d50. And sure, it can put out some great lead sounds too.
I just got a d50, please please pretty please show me where to fing these patches for those pads, these are so smooth, warm, meditative sounds
Hi fischek, can you send me a link for downloading the sounds? Thank you so much - Wonderful video and very good mood and play!
HI, Awesome video. Did you get the patches from a D50 card or from a computer? THX .
@vjrei Maybe you are talking about the Musitronics M.EX expansion board. It is still available (currently for 78,00 EUR).
@tmste thanks - the link is in the description
thanks Ouletente, I didn't do anything this time - just reduced the size of the vid to 30 mb...
Kudos my friend! Hope you're enjoying the sounds i've sent you. Should make a demo of those as well. :o)

it I am not mistaken it has 16 Note Polyphony. Yeah you are right, they sure sound like the real instrument.
really nice soundscape :-)
does the joystick control waveforms like the yamaha sy, or parameters?
I doubt these are factory sounds if that's what you mean - mine came with all sorts of organ sounds...I've found these patches on the internet
I used to work for Audio Note and you should hear flac files or Logic Studio through a valve DAC. Its a different world.
I meant Digital synths, of course I have many favourite analog synths too ;)
