For me this was the perfect punk progression. What a great album. Sublime guitars, vocals and original songwriting. I dug deep into this world of sound. Communication that only some have heard"...indeed.
Jackie Leven - an unsung genius - so influential and so ahead of his time - I think the musical aficionados of the day were afraid of him and Doll By Doll. A man who painted incredibly provocative pictures with his lyrics There is a land beyond the spoken word Communication that only some have heard And if I tell you the highway turning to take Keep it a secret or all of your mirrors will break....
I saw these guys at the Nashville Rooms circa 1979, and that's one show that really stuck with me for over 30 years. They seemed desperately untrendy at the time, but man, what a band. RIP Jackie L.
If doll by doll were around in the late 60s very early 70s i believe they would have had greater success , i think they would be talked about in the same way as LOVE , JEFFERSON AIRPLANE , ETC although nothing like those bands they really were like no one else . Jackie of course went on to make a huge body of fantastic work as a solo artist but still far to indivual for mainstream consumption. Ive been a fan of all things jackie leven for 39 years , having supported doll by doll and having put jackie on solo a few times , i cant tell you how much i adore the fella , RIP jackie .you are sorely missed.
Yes. I was just now thinking they belong more to that era, ten years before their time. I first read an article on Doll By Doll in the English magazine Zig Zag in must've been early 1979, but it wasn't until 1983 that I got to hear them when I found their third album in the cut price bin at Off The Record on El Cajon Blvd in San Diego. Cost me all of $2.99. Some records, more than documents, are talismans. This is one of them. "Remember".
Saw DbD live once, 1980 i think. Audience member and Jackie L fronted each other up. Almost came to blows! Does anyone have a transcript of all the lyrics to REMEMBER?
Recommended by a friend who remembers this era better than most. Not my cup of Tea but probably good at the time. Sounds a bit derivitative of other bands of that time i.e. Guitar riff, harmonies etc

What a great combination Jackie and Joe Shaw’s harmonies and great guitar playing with Dave McIntosh on drums. Marvellous!

Mark Hall - Where are you now?
the burning blogger of bedlam
I think Lobby Loyde produced this Album - a guitar god from Oz.
Really, he of Billy Thorpe association?
@@Deliquescentinsight That is right.
Gosh he sounds like Richard Thompson. Probably better, tbf
Dare you to turn off youtube while it spins one early doll by doll after another. I know I cant.
