It's the opening of Charles's one man show at The Auld Infirmary in Edinburgh. But all the drama seems to be off stage as he tries to work out how Angus, an actor appearing in a student show at the same venue, was fatally stabbed . His suspicions lie with Martin, the troubled writer and activist who it appears will stop at nothing to promote his own political agenda. As Charles pursues his leads he finds himself in danger of becoming the next victim of the murderer.

This was the first of the novels to be adapted for radio with Bill Nighy in the lead role (dramatized by Bert Coules in 1999). That explains the difference in style/cast to the later serials.
Thank you for your downloading Charles Paris I love these helps me cope with insomnia
You're so welcome. Thanks! 😍😘💖💞💕
Absolutely. Just discovered this. Love Bill Nighy's languid delivery.
An usually uncool start. Missed my 60's rock opening.
Cheers for the upload!! It has brightened my Sunday! xx
So glad! 😍😘💖💞💕
This was a better than average episode: less emphasis on drink and his annoying wife was nowhere to be seen. Charles was allowed to be a more fully-formed character.
But the banter, the verbal jousting with the wife is the selling point of the series.
I think Suzanne Burden as the wife is brilliant.
Nonsense, the characters, comedy & situations of later productions make the series so much more.
Yes I m sick of the drink but love the wife
Too much shouting and noise generally.
Love me some Charles Paris, but this one's nott up to snuff. Scripts off, sounds off, timing and dialogue off. What gives?
That is utter tosh..
Bill needs to put a little bit more thought into the gigs that he does.. He’s everywhere on the screen. I don’t think we need him now on radio, That goes for a lot of actors today. They’re just all over the place they all end up doing one thing which is playing themselves in one way or another. no depth of character .
Yeah, he should use his time now to focus on physics education, so he can build a time machine and go back to 1999. That way he can tell his 25 year younger self that he shouldn’t earn a living.
