  • Humans are each home to trillions of microbes that have a widespread impact on our physiology and predisposition to disease. Peter Turnbaugh, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, UCSF, explains. Recorded on 12/10/2015. [2/2016] [Show ID: 30503]

This was the best video I have seen on the subject of Gut Microbiome on UA-cam. Thank you so much and great job presenting. But I am shocked, because almost every other main video that has 100,000's of views on the subject, say it is NOT easy and takes alot of time for the microbiome to change from diet in humans, where as this information points to very fast changes that remain as long as new diet is maintained. Any thoughts on this?

Thank you for highlighting the differences between the Western diet and a healthy diet on the Microbiome. I've read that the Western diet affects the microbiome in as little time as 24 hrs. Lindy Ford, RD, LDN

Very interesting...... Just wondering if the high protein diet included milk?

Sugar is really the new kid on the block when it comes to diet. Honey and maple syrup were hard to get in the past. It would be interesting to see the effects of increasing sugar levels, separate from fat consumption.
Not surprised that milk fat caused problems in mice. How many mice get dairy in the wild. Not all humans do well on diary. Others thrive on it.
It would be interesting to see what the fake fats like shortening and heat and chemical produced oils have on microbe. They are also new to the human diet.

The main problem is the high fat content. Turnbaugh (2016), professing his favorite diet is all animal products with salami his favorite food (18:29) conducted a study partially sponsored “by an anonymous cheese vendor” (26:11), in which his team discovered “… diets that are high in fat in particular saturated fats, drive an increased host production of bile acids, those bile acids contribute to the expansion of Bilophila wasdsworthia, and if susceptible to inflammatory bowel disease, the Bilophila will then cause ulcerative colitis (the strongest predictor of Bilophila abundance was the amount of dietary fat consumed)… this provides the first support in humans that diet in the host production of bile acids may alter the microbiome in a way that could contribute to disease” (28:18).

      "Wrong"
Bob, I respect your passion for cheerleading/potshots from the sidelines but no critical thinker is going to take you seriously unless you can tackle the scientific evidence supporting the degraded digestion from high fat foods, which compromise human microbiota in the gut. Please raise your standards and FIRST refute the science relayed above and then chant "wrong" all you want.
      "Problem is the carb contents."
What "problem"? The problem of avoiding the intestinal dysbiosis that results from high fat content of the diet according to Turnbaugh, et al. (2016)???
      "Humans are hyper-carnivores."
If that were true, then why do the authors attribute ulcerative colitis to high fat intake, in particular the saturated fat and why do lifelong meat consumers inevitably manifest excess fat among other diseases and disorders compared to plant-based eaters? Healthy humans who haven't already degraded their digestive systems digest plants most effectively, which reverses diseases caused by meat.

@@chrisbranciere2747 are you aware of the health benefits of a sustained long term 'CLEAN' paleo-keto diet? alot of these experiments dont take into consideration eating clean yet high fat, low carb and most importantly ZERO SUGARS (berries only as an odd treat -we can get all benefits of fruit from other veggies) Keto is helping many people with chronic disease, myself one of them.
Admittedly, there seems to be an issue with the crebs cycle with the glucose -ATP energy pathway in my chronic illness. So i was euphoric when i discovered that glucose wasnt the only way to produce energy for our mitochondria -that they actually prefer fats! (plus healthy ketosis rather than diet fashion versions is neuro-protective, anti-inflammatory too! i didnt even try to lose weight, not really, yet ive gone from 12 stone in august, to 9 stone in november. Eating fat means i BURN fat XD and ive been able to control my weight loss and have remained 9stone -9st2lb stability last 4 weeks). After 4 weeks of this diet back last sept, i felt i had gained 50% more energy. i havent lost this physical energy since despite a couple of times where ive knocked myself out of ketosis via bad food choices like cake

Whoa, did you catch that? Around 35 minutes. They just demonstrated (accidentally) that a high-fat/high sugar diet (SAD) caused the mice to get fatter (heavier) at the same calories as the other group? They were "surprised" to learn that a calorie isn't a calorie. Ha ha. Then he moves on as if it's of no interest and should be ignored. Well, I guess it is embarrassing. And research funding from the food industry might dry up if you make too much of that.

It talks a lot about the changes and diets. Question: is there a better gut biome? Is the biome of plants better than the meat?
They are very different biomes, but is one better than the others?

    • @kimwarburton8490
      @kimwarburton8490 5 років тому

This science is so new it's hard to say what the ideal gut looks like as yet.
we know some things to avoid (candida overgrowth) but what we do know is that the guts that are the healthiest have the largest amount of different species/strains and usually from 'third world'. So even tho i already started to make my own kefir (and slowly adding diff strains as n when i can afford to, plus chucking in the odd pro-biotic pill) im going to be making fermented garlic (aka black garlic -yummy

Maybe there's more than one healthy gut community? Maybe some people eat meat and have stunningly healthy guts, others eat only plants and take supplements and have stunningly healthy guts, and others are ovolactovegetarians, ovovegetarians, lactovegetarians, or pescatarians - and all of them have stunningly healthy guts?
