Taking Care of your Hair at Burning Man

Burning Man can wreak havoc on your hair. The heat, the alkaline playa dust, the dust storms, it's all asking for a tangled birds nest by the time the weeks through. Here are my tips on some things you can do to your hair to help it survive, and some hairstyles that are great to help keep things under control while you're out there.

Add vinegar to the water to wash your hair. It will leave it super soft!

Ooooo I never thought of that! Do you use shampoo or conditioner as well? Or just straight in with the vinegar?

I have heard this works well to neutralize the moderate alkalinity of playa dust. I'm wondering if a gradual change of pH would cause less damage due to acid-base neutralization reaction on the hair. I am going to experiment using a rinse of baking soda-water followed by rinses of vinegar solution, increasing acidity to gradually approach the average pH of human hair and skin before applying oil and a shower cap at bedtime. I'll premix my solutions and have them ready to go in spray bottles by my bed. I may even bring a notebook to track what happens, but my main goal is to keep my poor hair somewhat intact ~nevertheless, it will grow back eventually~

I'd love to hear how that works out! My hair always ends up a nightmare and I have to get a pretty good cut afterwards to get rid of the damaged ends.

Thank you for all tips, I literally watched all your videos. Have you tried the braids before? I'm thinking about because I have long hair and don't wanna spend all the time taking care my air during burning man. Do you consider braids the best solution for long hair on playa dust?

Thanks for the tips! Still figuring out what I'm going to do with my hair - I usually leave it down because it's short and end up wearing a hat towards the end of the Burn. My hair is not quite super long yet so not sure if braids will work...

Thanks, it's tough with shortish hair. Would those little butterfly clips work and you could maybe put your hair in kind of twists held with the clips? I've never tried it but maybe that'd keep it in check for the first few days
