@@Docinaplane Oh I never said he was bad. I just cant tell because its the only video of his I seen and he didnt do headmovement in this 1 video. Maybe hes just giving Gabriel fences to go around.
That would not be just a fun video, that would be a fight which one should pay money to see. They are both former (?) KB champions and really amazing fighters. Some promoter organise a proper fight between proper youtube-fighters instead of this ”Jake Paul beats a senior citizen” -crap.
@@moz5831 that's probably not going to happen due to their size difference. Wonderboy is much bigger than Varga. They are at least 2 weight classes apart.
Gabriel, the fact that you don't sweep/dump ppl you don't know or haven't developed that sparring relationship with goes a long way to show how thoughtful you are. Because all it takes is one wrong fall to mess up a shoulder or snap a knee tendon/ligament
I think it also speaks to the level of Mike‘s gym and tutorage that his students, even when significantly bigger than their sparring partner, have that level of control over their power. Seems like a great place for learning and becoming a better fighter
Maybe a video on size difference sparring etiquette? We all know about the BIG guy that won’t pull his strikes but we usually don’t hear about the little guy taking liberties with power or swarming after/catching kicks that would’ve broken their ribs or legs.
If a little guy punches me full force in the face during sparing I just give him 1 back and thats usually the end of that. Seeing as you can see them wobble just from the one half power clean shot... Actually they kinda get scared after that and just start going super super super soft. And as a big guy you have to learn that some of your high speed shots can actually KO a little guy even though you are putting zero muscle behind it and you have to be careful.
@@dirtpoorchris I’m 6’3 205 and I usually settle them down with a front kick or leg kick because even just the speed of fast jab will snap their head back and I’ll feel bad, but at the same time I’m not someone’s heavy bag 😂
Interesting thought on the sweeps....IF a fighter refuses to control their aggression after being warned, I will immediate increase my knee strikes and sweeps...unfortunately some guys have to learn the hard way,and at 160 pounds I have to protect myself against larger guys similar to the ones in this video
I like that you don't grab kicks and dump people, especially in light sparing. I get annoyed if someone grabs my 1/2 speed kicks and dumps me. There is a reason the kick is 1/2 speed and power.
Its hard to spar realistically against 250 lbs person because they sorta have a "mauling effect" that happens when they are angry or fully committed, (like when Mike Tyson throws 5 strikes in 2 seconds and Mike Tyson was 218 lbs when champion). But a big guy can also just let you train on them, but its not exactly realistic to a real fight because he isnt flinching you and KO'ing you in 10 seconds. The stuff I let people land on me in sparring WOULD NEVER HAVE A HOPE OF TOUCHING me in a real fight against the same person. Its fun for the smaller person though if you Teddy bear up and let them practice, knowing you wont maul them.
@@quiquecabedo6502 Anyone over 200 lbs is capable of doing the mauling effect... If you are smaller u have to use aggression theory even more unless you are an iron worker with insane tendons or something.
one of the best decisions i've made was to subscribe to sensei seth a few months ago, and through his channel i got to know people like the legendary jesse enkamp, the wonderboy thompson, hard2hurt, kevin lee and now your channel. i'm instantly made into a big fan. also i have a question: in 1:24 you said, the other guy did a great job of not using his weight while sparring someone lighter. as a heavier guy myself i'm always wondering where is it that i might've just brute forced through my smaller sparring partner instead of using my technique. so my question is, what are some of the bad habits that a heavier person could have when sparring with a lighter partner ?
Maybe its just me, but when I watch fighters who have long hair, its SO much easier to see when they get hit in the head. The shock of the impact shows up so much better when their hair shakes. Isnt this a disadvantage when it comes to judging in MMA or kickboxing? Like when you sparred Cliff here, it was so clear when he got hit in the head even though you were going light.
Love your episodes. And nice to know to not sweep everyone who is Infront of me... I never thought someone can get injured from it and I love sweeps... I mean I don't sweep new guys but a lot of the guys who ain't on my level I like to catch and sweep so they don't throw sloppy kicks. 😅
Quick question: I was told not to get in the habit of trying to catch kicks thrown in sparring, since they come at a much lower speed than real life and that might screw me over if I do that with a full speed kick. What are your thoughts on that, since I see you catching kicks in these videos?
If you also learn to step off the line of kick negating it's power it's fine. If you catch kick without moving, then you will eat kick unprotected and that's not good.
From my experience, coming from a kung fu school where we spar a lot and use mid and high kicks often, the way we solve this problem is following this rule of thumb: if you're sparring someone who can throw kicks fast while still holding them at the last moment to prevent strong impacts, then feel free to catch as many kicks as you can, but if you're sparring someone who can't kick that fast while still maintaining control, then only catch kicks if you read and predicted the opponent's movement, rather than reacted to it. Just remember: while being too confortable with trying to catch kicks is really bad, NOT training it in sparring is also really bad because you will have no experience with it
I feel like part of this is because you cant rly throw good knees to the face, front kicks to the face etc in sparring, which usually work great against shorter guys
I’m not much of a fan of the Collabs, but I have to say Gabriel you are very nice guy. You could’ve Jacked these guys up and didn’t. I find that when good fighters hold back that’s when they can get hurt.
Whilen seeing your video, I remember when I do sparring. I'm 6'1" and I weigh 195lb, the thing is there is no a sparring partner around my weight (from 175lb to 200lb), so I have to spar with the heavy dudes (a guy that is 6' and weighs 240lb, a guy who is 6'5" and weighs around 220lb and a dude who is 6'3" and weighs around 240lb) It can be a bit unfair, but this is good for me, because I got accostumed quite easy to hard and heavy hits. The rest of my team are below 165lb and smaller, so is quite unfair to spar with them.
i am 5'11 at 194lbs and i get wrecked by fighters in sparring that are 150lbs, one of them is 5'7 the other is 5'9 ish, they are too fast and can still hit hard and have cardio for days lol, should i just clinch more?

Backwards boxing and kicking: it can be quite helpful to keep your hitting range whilst they can't reach you. If you close the spaces while keeping the distance with the jab or the teep, soon yoor opponent will have nowhere to run and this is the place where you need your opponent, you need your opponennt immobile.
