Roland, Julianna, etal, thousands of thanks to you for sharing your wonderful, loving, soulful, lyrical, artful, playful, and friendly selves as you undertake these glorious bicycle ride adventures. What gems for anyone who lands on Bicycle Shorts videos. Inspiring, beautiful, cheerful, engaging, and packed with good viewing and ideas! I love them all, and my favorite is Discovering America by Bicycle.
I watched your Top 10 Rails to Trails, which was awesome. Subscribed, and glad I did because I’m now looking forward to watching your journey across America. You do an incredible job editing and producing a top notch video. Happy trails!
Great video Roland / Julianna, stumbled upon your channel (UA-cam algorithm) and really enjoyed the 10 best rail trails. Just subscribed and looking forward to watching the across America series.
Started watching this series again to fill the time from March Madness. My bracket (and interest) got busted in round one. Just as good if not better the second time around 🚴♂️
Sorry about the brackets. I'm glad we can be a backup. The thing I like about these videos, as well as College Basketball, is that they are true reality TV. Appreciate you watching!
" we re right by the showers" Julianna is pumped....I love when you are touring and things just line up and the end of the day is just beautiful. I have toured the Olympic NP and the discovery trail coming from Seattle after flying in from Tampa, Fl and WA State and the Cascades is one of my favorite places to bicycle tour in the world. Great looking trip and love the set up ...Ortlieb all the way. Cheers and I'm happy to follow your adventures.
Watched your Top 10 Rail Trails video last night and immediately subscribed. I'm excited to join you for the entire journey. Chapt 1 done! I hope to do many of the trails myself one day when i retire, if not the whole thing. Thanks for documenting your journey.
Very nice... I love living dreams... this summer I hiked 132 miles around Lake Okeechobee... something I wanted to do for 15 years... next May .. riding bicycle from south fla. To nj.. coastline.. & returning Appalachian trail
Awesome! What a great idea! Love that! I find that living your dreams, or even obsessions, is what makes life truly special. Follow those crazy dreams!
Yes, we are definitely blessed! It wasn't easy convincing Julianna to try bike touring with me - she is a road cyclist at heart and thought the idea of carrying that much weight was a nightmare - but now she's seen the light.
I live in Washington, just finished watching the Washington portion of your video series. The Discovery Trail hasn't been around very long and isn't that well known yet, but I think it is going to be destination for many bike packers. You made us look good. Thank you.
It is a real gem, one of the best trails for this kind of riding in the country. Would love to see it completed, and a clean connection to the Palouse to Cascades.
@@TheBicycleTourists You guys have ridden a lot of miles since then, I am surprised you remember that. Yes, a more direct connection would be nice. I think you guys did a great job choosing your route across Washington.
I love, love, LOVE these videos! They are so well made and entertaining. They perfectly represent the joy and challenges of bicycle touring. I’m binging on all the episodes! Roland and Julianna are the cutest couple and such compatible riders. The Katy Trail and Ohio to Erie Trail episodes bring back memories of my adventures on them. The Olympic Discovery Trail and Couer d’Alene Trail episodes inspire me to add those to my bucket list. Ride on! You guys are great!
This is so awesome, I really feel like I'm there in the adventure! I love the mix of beautiful vistas, information about where you are, and the beautiful everyday moments that make up the adventure.
Stumbled on your channel today at ep-8. GREAT! Glad I found you. Really nice videography and commentary. I have already subscribed and will be working my way to catch up to your current reports.
Glad you like the ODT, I rode it a few years ago going the opposite way when the northern part around lake crescent was still single track. Enjoyed the video and will be following.
Okay. I just saw your video of the Cuyahoga Valley in Ohio. I hope do parts of the Ohio to Erie trial eventually. But, what made you think you could even do this ride across America?
Hi guys still waiting to see the video if when u guys had a tire changed in loogootee indiana I been waiting to see that video special the trail angles that helps u guys when u need it
I believe you made a brief appearance in the Prologue. We'll be in Indiana soon, I promise, but patience! it takes longer to edit these videos than it did to do the ride!
Rode the Ohio to Erie trail this year, my back hub broke right after the ride. The bike doesn't even have 1,000 miles on it kinda disappointed. Can anyone suggest a reliable touring bicycle?
Mine has gotten thousands of miles, it's a Novarra Safari. You might find one used. Also hear good things about Surley Disk Trucker, Co-op, Trek 520 and 920 (I think that's right).
Well Done for Chapter 1! Details questions now: 1. Camera(s) used? 2. Video editor used? 3. Edited on laptop or phone? Looking forward to each and every installment ❤️❤️❤️
1) GoPro 8 and 9, and iPhone 12. I probably should've gotten a Sony A6500 or something similar. Next time! 2) Premiere Pro was the editing program. Fabulous but on the expensive side. 3) Edited on a desktop, Mac Mini with a fairly big processor. Again, thanks for watching!
What transportation did you use to get to the trailhead. I'm trying to plan my trip and am trying to figure out how do get three people and three bikes from SeaTac to La Push.
That's a good question. In our case my daughter Bailey offered to drive from Colorado out to the coast with us, and then road trip back home with my car. I'd be curious how you solve this. In any case, the Olympic Peninsula and the Olympic discovery Trail should not be missed. Good luck!
Unless you have friends or family who will drive you out, there is no easy way to La Push. You can link public transportation together, but it would be very hard from SeaTac. Due to videos like Roland and Julianna's more people are making La Push (rather than Seattle) a starting point. Perhaps there will be a commercial shuttle soon. It has been 8 months since you posted ... did you already go? What was your solution?
Got some questions how many hrs u ride in a day how many miles u did in a day did u take breaks for food drinks rest bathrooms did u use a map to see where u at how long was the trip
We ride between 30 and 60 a day, depending on what there is to see, how energetic we feel, conditions, etc. that could take us 6-8 hours, with lots of stops in between. We break as needed, or when opportunities like bathrooms, restaurants, etc. arise. We play it by ear. And take it easy and enjoy the ride.
There have been times when I had to cut short a camping trip. It never occurred to me to leave the receipt for someone else, because I thought the park would make an issue of it. Does this generally work?

Wonderful ride 👍
I can't wait to do it again!

Yeah, bike touring helps you appreciate everything even the smallest things. The OP is absolutely amazing!

In three words: inspiring, inspiring, inspiring
Thank you!
Super! Here's wishing you safe riding and tailwinds.
thanks and happy trails!
This is the tv show I was looking for. I am planning my route across america. I am eager to see what suggestions you guys have
I hope you enjoy it, and good luck on your adventure!
Lovely camera work and editing. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the kind words! It's our pleasure!
Yes!!! This right here!! This is what I want to do. Bike tours!!

Always carry a military can opener and a spoon
I hope the two of you realize how blessed you are being able to do this together

Thank you for exposing me to the Olympic Discover Trail. I plan on riding that when I retire. Awesome presentation.
Thats awesome! Its an amazing trail, getting better all the time. A real gem.
Absolutely love your documentary of the Olympic Peninsula. Stunning...what a pleasure for you to take us along with you!
So glad you’re enjoying!
Nice Salsa back with front rack
Julianna loved a lot about her Salsa. Although the climbing gear left a bit to be desired...
Stumbled upon your channel while researching the rail trail. Great storytelling! Looking forward to finishing the series when I'm done with work :)
Awesome! Glad you could join us!

Wow, Kellie, thanks! Riding is our happy place. Love adding those bucket list rides, both are exquisite!
When the nice, respectable lady gets surprised and cusses, "Holy Sh*t", you know just how dark that tunnel was. 😂
I guess it was the first tunnel of the day. Took her by surprise!
This is so awesome, I really feel like I'm there in the adventure! I love the mix of beautiful vistas, information about where you are, and the beautiful everyday moments that make up the adventure.
Thanks B! Yeah, I think they're coming together very nicely!

Its Heaven! Your life amazing my friend
I feel very fortunate and very grateful
So sweet!
Muchos gracias!
Great start to the trip guys. I hope you get your touring legs soon. Jay
Hey Jay, it was actually pretty quick for us to get up to speed, thankfully.
Glad you like the ODT, I rode it a few years ago going the opposite way when the northern part around lake crescent was still single track. Enjoyed the video and will be following.
I would love to go back, I wonder where the progress is on the unfinished portions.

Good question! I guess we just wanted to, and knowing that others had done it, I figured, why not us?
As Marvin Gaye once said, ride on!
And who wouldn't listen to Marvin Gaye?

@@TheBicycleTouristsI recently changed to DaVinci Resolve and would definitely recommend it. It's free!!

The park ranger later came up to us and said it was technically not okay. but he let it slide, as long as we paid, which of course was no problem.
@@TheBicycleTourists I suspect it might go down that way. Glad he was reasonable.
What kind of bikes do you ride?
Julianna is on a Salsa Journeyman, I’m on a Novarra Safari.
