SolidWorks Tutorial | How to create Threads on a Bolt M10 - EXPLAIN - step by step

  • This video is created to help students and beginners to learn how to create threads on a bolt in a very advanced explanation giving a strong tutorial based on real actual life.
    Datasheets were found by Mr Jon Rackley at the University of Wolverhampton in 2016.

    Brilliant. I can cut these on my lathe no problem as the carbide tool is already formed. 3d printing them is way harder. Great tutorial. Now i need solidworks.

    Some may use equations and define Pitch and H as global variables. Measures that use their values can be defined by a equation set on dimension box.

    i had trouble on my first attempt using the "sketch fillet" feature. when i make pierce of the profile and the end line of the screw, the profile "FLIPS" on the other side. Using the 3 point arc on the other hand seems to have no problem at all. all in all, your video is great. kudos to you!

      Dear Alvin, your comment is so valuable for us here at Solidworx Edu and Thank you.
      All of our students used to face same thing.
      The trick here is to fully select the sketch of the thread and drag it close to the point where you want to do pierce. NOTE: Don't drag it too close to overlap the pierce point but close to it.
      All in all, the best way to do it is the way that makes you feel more trusted to use.

      It depends. If I understand your question the answer will be that the correct point should be the middle because if you select it from the top you will get small in-depth threads. if you selected from the bottom you will get deeper than normal. Hope I have help and answer your question.

    When the thread profile is finished I select pierce but there is a conflict (18:39), but if I select coincident there is no conflict. I use Solidworks 2011

    Hi, Nice video that really helps me a lot. Not like other tutorial, u explained how the dimensions of the triangular was defined, which is super awesome. my question is, how did you determine the 5/8 H, 1/8 H these parameters? where did you get them? btw, I don't understand why H=0.8633*P. Could you explain a little bit more about these? Thank you

      Thank you so much for great explanation and valuable documents. Now I understand why H=0.866P, it is basically mathematic relationship of equilateral triangular (like you said Root of 3 over 2). It doesn't really matter whether we use 0.866 or root of 3 over 2, coz this is a practice. Anyway, great to hear explanation from you. but as your side video shot showed, that the radius of incircle of this equilateral triangular equals to 1/8 H, is this what your graphic illusion means? I calculated myself and searched on the web, and found that the incircle radius of equilateral tri is 1/3H, which is not 1/8 H. Can you provide me a better vision of your draft showing how these relationships were defined. sorry to keep asking you questions :p...just for learning. Thank you Marios, really appreciate your help...

    Hi, thank very much for this video. Altough I have a problem. I am creating not normalized whitworth thread, so I have adjusted the cutting sketch to shape it. But SW doesn´t seem to like it, every time I select the sketch and helix and click OK, the error message pops up saying that it hadn´t been able to finish the operation. Can anyone help me please ? I can send the screenshots if needed. Thanks.

    Great video! - A question: at about 7:58 you state that the right-plane is on the end of the spiral path. However, it's not clear why the spiral path started on the right-plane to begin with. When I created a spiral on an arbitrary cylinder, I had to create a reference plane in order to make a sketch that is perpendicular to the end of the spiral (for the thread profile). Can you explain?

      If I understand correctly your question the answer should be:
      You should create the chamfer at the bottom of the bolt. Then you have to select the bottom surface of the bolt and select sketch. Then you have to select the edge of the cylinder and select convert entities. There is no need to create any plane here.
      Then when you are at the helix and spiral option at the left hand side you have o set the starting angle at 0.
      By setting the value 0 your spiral line will be exactly on the right plane.
      I hope i answer your question.

      @@solidworxedu1035 Thanks for your reply! Ok, the part I was missing was that the default angle for the Spiral on first attempt was 225 degrees, not 0. Setting the "Start angle:" to zero gave the expect behavior as in your video. Additionally: as a newbie, I was unfamiliar with the "Convert Entities" command - In Fusion 360, I think it's called "Project geometry" or some such thing.

      PS: I did try the thread tool but in my case, I need 45deg threads which are non-standard [so they can be effectively 3d Printed]

      Mr. Tuan, We are happy to see your comment on our Channel.
      When you start a project you have information about the Bolt you want to manufacture. Such as diameter, length and pitch and for what purpose.
      We know that there are categories of tolerances between bolt and nut. Most common are the ''Fine'' Category and ''Coarse'' Category).
      For example a standard ''Fine'' Thread Bolts (Metric) bolt of M125 has a pitch of 4mm. This is standard value.
      So, In most cases you use the pitch value equal to the chamfer.
      In the case of ''Coarse'' Thread Bolts (Metric) bolt of M125 has a pitch of 6mm. So, here your chamfer will be 6mm.

    Good tutorial! Please explain how you make the objects in solidworks look like they are made of metal and have nice reflections? I can't seem to figure this out... Do you use some sort of rendering? On my computer the all look simply grey with some shades... your input would be very helpful :)

    how crazy is metric standard compared to imperial,there everything is very easy and fast,you have the pitch the 55 degrees angle and that is it.here you have to draw gioconda.

    What is the advantage of creating threads manually rather than just using the thread feature in Solidworks?

      The advantage of doing it manually is to:
      1. Understand the philosophy behind threads. (How they are created).
      2. If you are a manufacturer and you want to be precisely in threads, you can do it that way.
      3. You learn how to do your own unique threads So the customer can buy bolts and nuts only by you. (This is what automotive manufacturers usually do).

    Is it possible there is some already made models where u just put in your Mx, length, width and some magic do it for you? Or I am returning my 3d printer!! i knew I shouldnt be able to made these models

      I think it happens whenever you type something on the keyboard. Your mic is picking up the vibrations and when played back with a subwoofer sitting on the floor it sounds like someone is pounding the wall.
