  • Florence Cathedral, formally the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Flower, was begun in 1296 in the Gothic style to a design of Arnolfo di Cambio and was structurally completed by 1436, with the dome engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi.
One of the most significant architectural achievements of the entire Renaissance was undoubtedly the construction, by Brunelleschi, of the dome over the Florence Cathedral. This work, begun in the summer 1420, was completed (except for the lantern) in 1436.
It is the largest brick dome ever constructed.
