Flipper Camaro Is A Z28!?! We Ran The Numbers!

  • People have been asking me about the history on this 1968 Camaro. I got it as a complete basket case. It was a stripped down shell of a car. So I finally got to decoding the vin number. I had hopes it would of been a nice rare car, big block? Z28? SS?
No it was just an everyday run of the mill Camaro. After that I decided to glue in the glass to start to enclose the car from the elements.
Up next, a whole bunch of cutting, sanding and welding.

It would have been built in the last week of December 1967, because the '68 models started production in September of 1967.

Correct! Tooling up for the beginning of the 1968 run might have been about July or August 1967. Therefore, tooling for 1969 would be approximately July, August 1968, after 1968 production ended.

Just an FYI, on anything you actually care about, the windshield and back glass should always have a ribbon of 3/8" butyl tape, back-filled with urethane.
Butyl tape prevents glass from sinking too far into the pinchweld, so you won't have a gap between the glass and the moldings.

Agreed... and window clips be set in place to centre the class for proper trim fit. The buyer will have to remove front/rear glass and do this right if they really know to.

Dan , I recently sold my 1968 Z/28 . It too was originally white with black stripes built in Norwood Ohio in Dec 1967 and sold in Edmonton. All USA records were destroyed but you can google GM "Vintage Vehicle Services" in Oshawa Ontario for all records of every U.S. built Camaro sold in Canada. They can tell from your serial # if you have a actual Z/28, and EVERY options, as built, including dealer that sold it and even key codes and much more . Definitely worth checking it out as documented Z/28 body is a great selling point , even if not "restored". The only other way to prove it is the "Protect-O-Plate" found in the owners manual or glove box . I'm sure yours is long gone by now

I've said it before, but watching you not clean, prime and paint the glass channels is like OCD shock therapy for me. I was actually gritting my teeth at one point. I understand what you are doing though. You can put it outside now after you put side glass in. Also, the car is easier to sell when see it with glass. But, my OCD wants to ask if you at least put rust converter in the glass channels??

Back in the 80s when I lived in California my dad used to get these Camaros cheap like under 500 complete car. We'd strip them down then cut em in half then down the middle and take the parts to the Pomona swap meet. Rust free parts were an easy sell. Corvette parts sold good too. Now they fetch good money all junked up and rotted times have changed.

I knew someone who had a base model 1969 Camaro with 2 options, the Z28 option and black stripes. The car was white. The engine was an DZ 302, 4 bolt main. Earlier Zs had MO 302s, 2 bolt mains.

Dan, in the 60's a model year was built from July of one year to July of the next year and sold from September of one year to September of the next year. Exceptions were mid-year introductions that were introduced and sold from February to September of the same year (e.g. 70-1/2 Camaro). The same is still pretty much true for today.

I had a 70 1/2 camaro that was built in October of 1970. I remember my brother had a book on the history of Camaros and for the 1970 model it had pictures of a concept 1970 model that had the 1969 molde with the 1970 1/2 front end the was inspired by the Jaguar x model. The totally redesigned the whole car and got a complete new body. They were late in designing and manufacturing hence the 1970 1/2 Camaro.

I think SS`s had 12 bolt-multileaf (5) springs and RS`s had hide-away headlights. Hard to tell by the Plate. It`s probably an average 327 powerglide car I bet. My neighbors `68 Camaro was an original RS with 327 Powerglide with hide-away headlights. Another friend`s plain `67 was a 327 powerglide original and a third friends was a plain `69 with a 307 and a 4 speed added instead of the three speed standard. All High School buddies from the late 70`s. I remember lots of Cruising Fun in those Camaros !!!

Dan, I have always put a "nice" (not necessarily new) set of wheels and tires on all my vehicles, truck or car. I agree that it definitely makes the look of the vehicle, for the better. I would explain that the wheels and tires do not go with the sale, UNLESS they want to pay additional for them. In my mind the first thing I had to do was swap out the running gear.

and it does really change the look of the car even if it is Chinesium glass...
Slots and Torq-Thrust wheels both look really good on 1st gen Camaros.
I would definitely use them for pictures to sell it and just say that they aren't
included. Most people will probably put the wheels on that they want anyway.

Mark the bottom of the windshield and then take your stud welder that you used to pull dents with and weld a stud on the driver's side and one on the passenger side sniff them off where they're the same thickness is the windshield and then put your sealer and your smooth or whatever else you're going to put on there and the windshield will set on those studs and that will hold the windshield in place until your sealer dries simple we have even used small sheet metal screws and when you take the screws out do it with the wire feed fill the holes up or if you use the studs for your stud gun just taken get them where the power of flowers and move them and break them off simple simple

spot primer the flange before you glue the glass. if you're installing the windshield and back glass to bare metal or a rusty surface, you'll get premature rusting and later on the urethane seals will have leaks. This is also provided that the vehicle isn't always garage parked or stored indoors

Howdy to you both!! Thought I'd reach under the old, I mean really old, skullcap and fetch you a bit of food for use later.
If you take the VIN# and enter it into a Secure VIN Search, online, in seconds it will tell you everything your heart desires about the vehicle. Seems a lot easier to me, I've used it. I knew my 04 Jeep WJ came from the US as the speedo is in Mph instead of Kph... the search told me tons about it and for free. Even the order options were listed. It is a NY vehicle, and no, it was not rusted out. 😆 I got very lucky, she's approaching 300,000 miles, rust free, original engine ( not rebuilt, you can't kill a good 4.0 Il6. ) still gets great gas mileage and handles real good off road and it's an "Antique"... 🙄
Things seem to be going the swimmingly Dan way which is par for the course and supported by Danni's laughter. Excited to see it on wheels and in primer. 😃... the car, not Danni. 😂
As far as the tire/wheel ordeal... keep your good set and do whatever you wish on the car. I'm old and with you on the steelys in the rear.
