Anthony is such an extraordinary actor, and bringing a warmth of character to the role when we never saw his face, eyes, or whatever was a masterclass.
One of the most interesting things I learned, many decades ago, is that props used in (very specifically) FILM production - not digital video, but actual film and emulsion media - is weathered to "overkill" proportions. Simply because the inherent "graininess" of film media, no matter how advanced the media and development process, just automatically shaves down some 50% or so of the very fine detail of the piece. So prop people learned early on to get big and heavy on the elements they wanted to show up clearly in the final production. There kind of no other way to do it, and have those details come across in the end.
Props- literally and colloquially- to Anthony Daniels for SAVING all of these things! And saving them in a specific, intentional manner, such that they can be catalogued and identified! So amazing to have so much of the history of that character specifically- but also the history of that film franchise- all together in ONE PLACE: in the original actor's possession. I actually feel badly that it's being broken up by the auction process. I get it. Anthony- as much as we would wish he could- will not live forever. And this very important stuff is going to have to go somewhere. And it is impractical to hope that it would all stay together as a unit. The auction has to break it up, and different people will get to enjoy each having their own piece of Star Wars and pop culture history. And this stuff will change hands more than once, and some of it will get traded and sold from here to there, and some of it will get damaged, and some of it will be lost, or misplaced, or carelessly discarded by someone who doesn't know better. That is the fate of all artifacts, sad to say. Almost 50 years since 1977 is but a drop in the bucket of time; these treasures will (hopefully) be around for the 100th anniversary of the films, and beyond! I really hope that this particular head- which seems to have been so well preserved up to this point- will continue to be looked after and preserved for many more years to come. It deserves it.

G,day Adam from Sydney Australia. You inspired me to repair a large fish made of fibreglass and painted. I used polystyrene foam board and glue to reproduce the missing parts. Thankyou sir. 🌏🇦🇺
Anthony Daniels is a global treasure and I'm so glad he held onto so many things that others would have just tossed, and that we get a chance to see it
The original Picard chair from TNG is to the left of Adam and Wolverines Jacket to the right, what an auction I will unfortunately miss. C-3PO was and still is one of my favorite Star Wars characters. Adam, buy it, you know it would look amazing in the cave!
Fun fact, Adam appeared in the music video for Billy Joel's "You're Only Human" in 1985. He played the redhead guy with glasses who was saved from drowning at the beach back when he was a struggling actor.
I recall seeing Anthony on the British morning t.v. show The Big Breakfast, back in 1999. And during the interview, I remember he said that he was cold inside the costume during the Tatoonie scenes, because the costume reflected the sun.
I learned about a month ago that my friend’s mother, who used to live next to the original Elstree Studios, had the entire original C-3PO behind her couch, as her father was one of the original creators of the costume.
I never really considered how dorky C3PO actually looks. He looks like a classic 1950's futurism robot. He literally has car headlight eyes. Somehow, this is considered one of the quintessential faces of Star Wars, and they're right, it is.
About the light globes. It’s not how long you run them, it’s how many times, how quickly, and at what temperature you switch them on and off. The controller should be designed to prolong their life. If it’s just a switch then you’re gonna break them
Regarding the heat inside that costume, at least it has a high albedo. Reflecting a lot of the light that hits it reduces the amount that penetrates as heat. It still looks hot as fcuk.
I once crossed Daniels and Prowse in a parking lot after they had done a whole day in costume at the BX in Lackland AFB in Texas back in 81. I was told that C3PO and Darth Vader were going to be there, the place was going to be full of kids, no eyeballing the Moms! Was impressed with the costumes, thought the USAF spares no expense! Only after a few minutes did I recognize David from A Clockwork Orange and realized it was them in their movie costumes.
Adam, the gloves are to keep your oils from getting on the artifact. Touching your face with the gloves on picks up your oils on the outside of the gloves.
what's still amazing about this, they couldn't bring out Jabba, or a light saber when it came to public events. BUT they could bring out Anthony Daniels and have him perform C3PO to the Queen of England. So yeah this is really mind blowing. I still amazed how much they hid the reflection off the suit for so many films. I like it when he's all GRUNDGY.
I can sense the nervousness of the guy catering the auction pieces when adam is flailing his arms, touching his own oily skin, and bending the script - it's not like that 3po head is 1/2-1Million dollar piece or anything.
Stuff in the background that I recognize: captain's chair from STNG, the mask from Jim Carry's film The Mask, Wolverine's jacket, stormtrooper helmet. There were other items on the shelves that I couldn't make out, sadly, but someone else mentioned Marty's guitar from Back To The Future. Some amazing items at the propstore! Wish I could afford to get any one of them, especially Wolverine's jacket!
The Dort Mall in Grand Blank Michigan has a full original costume of C-3PO on display there, with other original costumes from the Star Wars movie and other movies. The Man that owns the mall uses the main mall as a museum for many movie props he has bought over the years. He has real cannons scuba divers have recovered from ships with plaques tell you what ships there were from, A small airplane that was used in a move hanging from the sealing, old cars, bikes and a movie prop of a scaled down ship used in a movie right now can think of the famous movie it was in, and so much more. I was there a few years ago and there is so much there to see.
And to think, C3P0 was supposed to be a rough New York cab driver type. So much of Star Wars was the magic that others created around George, despite his best efforts to make it terrible.
Wow! Just from pausing as Adam flipped through Anthony Daniel's original shooting script, you can see the differences. For example, in the scene where Vader chokes Motti, Vader uses the phrase "the Force of Others". This was originally going to be what it was called, but they changed it to simply "the Force" (side note: in Rogue One they had an homage to this when Chirrut used the "others" phrase to the people in the street). Also in the script, it has Vader lifting a cup with the Force. Later, Princess Leia calls it the "Clone War" (singular) and Obi-Wan smokes a chrome pipe. I wonder if the full text of this original version of the shooting script is available online?
A replica of C3PO head is something I've always wanted on my collection. I say replica cause I guarantee I won't afford this iconic piece. Just brilliant
As a kid, Kenner toys briefly sold a C3PO head, bright gold figure case. I like 1000s of others got the Kenner Vader head case. I think Kenner cut the C3PO head after a year or so.
Adam, thank you for sharing this. And I hope you know that I love you platonically, but as a museum person... please stop touching your face in between touching the objects! The gloves only do so much, until you touch your face.
I know Adam knows better, but, it doesn't do any good to wear the gloves if you're touching all of the greasy parts of your body with them. I've lost count of how many times he's wiped his nose with the gloves and then handled the artifacts 🤦🏼♂️ By contrast the curator holds his hands, in his hands 🙏🏼
For a film fan, it really is like looking at a real painting by Rembrandt or a statue by Michelangelo. These are pop art icons and what would you give for such a relic of a screen dream?!
That’s cool, I got to meet him at the Celebration just before The Rise of Skywalker came out in Chicago. I can do a really good impression of him and I’m the same height as him too. What’s funny is I’m American, and he’s British, but I can do his voice almost perfectly, as well as Alec Guinness’ Kenobi, Yoda and the Emperor’s voices.
the 3po head in perfect condition is one thing, but the script from a new hope? thats actually insane its around and in that amazing of condition. actors and crew back then probably took stuff home then tossed it in a corner and just forgot about it more often than not. thats fucking insane.
About being forgotten on set in a suit, didn't that not happen to the actor who played R2D2? And yes, not all shots of R2D2 are RC controlled, some of the earlier ones had an actual actor inside of it!
Remember folks: Grant Imahara also wore a C-3PO suit at Prequel premier. Man's managed to fit into well enough, and also commented on seeing the actors through the pencil-sized eyes.
I am neither a movie buff or a Star Wars fan by any stretch but I would, if I could afford it, buy that piece of Americana film history because like Adam said it’s one of the most famous faces in American history with out a doubt!
Some one, can't remember if it was Lucas or someone else, gave a speech at the First Congregational Church of LA in the 70-80's. And they had the C3-PO and Chewy masks with them. My parents were volunteering for something, so I was there early and whoever it was showed them to me and let play with them a little bit. What I remember about the C3-PO is it was some sort of rubber and the paint was flaking off in a lot of places, so if it was movie used it was probably the Star Wars costumes and kind of a disappointment to a little kid.
Except museums can sell, and they can give away. Deaccessioning is ideally moderated by ethical guidelines and stakeholder consent, but if an item no longer sufficiently aligns with the museum’s mission; or if the proceeds from its sale would facilitate new acquisitions / improved care of remaining collections; or if it would come to greater benefit at another institution… then barring some stipulated restriction, it can absolutely be sold or gifted.
George Lucas had plans for a huge ILM museum & theater 🎥 space; Marin County or SF but that later was going to be Chicago then the whole concept went flat 😏.
I got to believe that the C3PO faux metal finishers drew inspiration from (or should have) - Brass musical instruments: you know like tuba, trumpet, sax... I had a neglected trumpet that started out new, bright, and shiny that looked like it was made from parts of C3PO.
@@ModelA My dads is tarnished or clear coat then was properly preserved avoiding green/black aging at same time my brothers medium bore trigger Yamaha was converted to a Medium bore no trigger due to how string for his trigger was always breaking every other month. You never know; many collectors loan to museums, some eventually donate, a museum itself or a generous benefactor could bid (even high-end prop prices are a drop in the bucket compared to the fine art world), or it could return to market in ten years. But even if it enters (or re-enters) a black hole for a time, it’s a double-edged sword; sales like this one are almost entirely responsible for prompting museums, studio archives, and - very gradually - the general public to finally see enduring value in original props and costumes. If it wasn't for collectors creating a visible market over the past few decades, much of what does reside today in museums would have either been tossed or remained boxed up in warehouses / closets / attics (just like Anthony Daniels’ collection up to now). On the whole, these auctions are far more stories of reappearances than disappearances.
Nearly 60, and this silly stuff still makes me giddy. I swear I remember seeing the original figures for sale for a time before the movie was even released.
When it was said that theyre incandescent light bulbs and not LED my heart stopped imagining one just going out mid interview. I dont know if Id ever turn them on.
C3PO was so clearly inspired by the Metropolis robot, The Maschinenmensch. Interesting how one of the most beloved IP's in human history. Is basically just a mash-up, a collage, of multiple other past IP's. Space Samurai!!!
The story of it is really cool. The auction guy gets pretty long in the tooth with his never ending promotional sale routine. Probably used to sell low end used cars. Give it a rest buddy. Still, it's another great video. Thanks Adam.
The cosume is a masterpiece because it looks like how a robot should look like. Meanwhile, Anthony Daniels sold us on how a robot should move and feel like while suffering through being in that costume.

I've lost count of how many times he's wiped his nose with the gloves and then handled the artifacts 🤦🏼♂️
By contrast the curator holds his hands, in his hands 🙏🏼
Awesome! I'd absolutely LOVE to get my hands on the script but could NEVER afford it.
I hope the C-3P0 parts aren't bought by Jawas. Oh, Artoo, that would be dreadful!
I cant be the only one waiting for your Ghostbusters Frozen Empire stuff because I NEED to see that arm mounted neutrona wand!
the 3po head in perfect condition is one thing, but the script from a new hope? thats actually insane its around and in that amazing of condition. actors and crew back then probably took stuff home then tossed it in a corner and just forgot about it more often than not. thats fucking insane.
About being forgotten on set in a suit, didn't that not happen to the actor who played R2D2? And yes, not all shots of R2D2 are RC controlled, some of the earlier ones had an actual actor inside of it!
Hopefully we get to see the Bicentennial Man stuff since Adam worked on that movie!
Ayyyy! Perfect timing!
One day in Adam's over enthusiasm, he's gonna touch or knock over something of great value with his flailing arms.
Wow it’s amazing to see the c3po helmet.
I can't believe what fantastic shape the printed Star Wars set script 📔 is in.
Silent Running mention!!!
Really wanted to see the interior, I always wonder about positioning.
The inside is photographed in high-res on their website - lot 362.
Great video! Would love to see that Loki Mask in the background next!
Oh man! Incredible!
@Adamsavage I’m hoping to see you in Brisbane at Supernova. I missed you in San Diego and Adelaide. Third times a charm! 😊
Washington DC - Smithsonian National Museum of American History has the 1983 C-3PO and R2-D2. Just saw them there a few weeks ago.
I want that next generation chair
an amazing collection, coming available at the same time - what's the odds on that.....!
So many memories
Some one, can't remember if it was Lucas or someone else, gave a speech at the First Congregational Church of LA in the 70-80's. And they had the C3-PO and Chewy masks with them. My parents were volunteering for something, so I was there early and whoever it was showed them to me and let play with them a little bit.
What I remember about the C3-PO is it was some sort of rubber and the paint was flaking off in a lot of places, so if it was movie used it was probably the Star Wars costumes and kind of a disappointment to a little kid.
So much of this stuff belongs in a museum that can’t sell it or give it away.
@@DavidLLambertmobile You mean the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art that's currently under construction in LA and set to open next year...?
it belongs in a museum
I got to believe that the C3PO faux metal finishers drew inspiration from (or should have) - Brass musical instruments: you know like tuba, trumpet, sax...
I had a neglected trumpet that started out new, bright, and shiny that looked like it was made from parts of C3PO.
Tarnished horns sound different. Some musicians allow their brass instruments to tarnish on purpose. Not kidding.
@@ModelA My dads is tarnished or clear coat then was properly preserved avoiding green/black aging at same time my brothers medium bore trigger Yamaha was converted to a Medium bore no trigger due to how string for his trigger was always breaking every other month. On brothers now Medium bore trombone it was easier to convert to a Medium bore and remove a wrap and make balance ballast bigger then remove a string and replace with a fully metal trigger as a standard production metal trigger would have had to been modified due to hinges being so small.
Need to be in a museum
Adam gets a little too excited around priceless objects at 10:30 - wonder if the prop guy ever gets worried?
Sadly this is likely to end up in some private collection never to be seen by most fans ever again but at least this video exists.
On the whole, these auctions are far more stories of reappearances than disappearances.
bit sad that the suites being broken up, I think its museum grade item should in in one
8:54 - just curious - is that Wolverine/Hugh Jackman's jacket in the background? (Back, right of screen??)
the fact that he could fit into that costume over the course of so many years just boggles my mind.
Nearly 60, and this silly stuff still makes me giddy. I swear I remember seeing the original figures for sale for a time before the movie was even released.
I vividly remember as a child, 1980 spring seeing new Kenner pics, figures of Star Wars TESB line saying; huh? 🤔 who the &*=÷ are these people?
Love Marty Mcfly’s guitar from Back To The Future 1 chilling in the background randomly
Why should that guitar invalidate speciaI họmọṣẹxuạI rights !
When it was said that theyre incandescent light bulbs and not LED my heart stopped imagining one just going out mid interview. I dont know if Id ever turn them on.
Super cool man wow!✨️💫👍
Remember C3PO was assembled from basically junk. So you're going to have all kinds of color variations. Having to identical bolts is the anomaly.
That wasn't part of the story in the original three movies, AFAIK.
The robot from Metropolis is not called Maria, it is The Man Machine.😫
The prophet is called Maria.
PLEASE look for the giant, Ace comb from Spaceballs. Funniest prop in film history.
C3PO was so clearly inspired by the Metropolis robot, The Maschinenmensch.
Interesting how one of the most beloved IP's in human history. Is basically just a mash-up, a collage, of multiple other past IP's. Space Samurai!!!
Great video sir
The story of it is really cool. The auction guy gets pretty long in the tooth with his never ending promotional sale routine. Probably used to sell low end used cars. Give it a rest buddy. Still, it's another great video. Thanks Adam.
The cosume is a masterpiece because it looks like how a robot should look like. Meanwhile, Anthony Daniels sold us on how a robot should move and feel like while suffering through being in that costume.
