I worked at a Dicks for about a year a few years ago. Job was fine, typical retail stuff, low pay, but employees had a 25% discount on clothing and 10% off everything else. An entire quarter of the price knocked off for brands like Nike or nice football jerseys is huge and i fully utilized it and miss it to this day
As someone from Texas where we have "Academy sport and outdoors", which is now in a few other states. We got Dicks about 10 years ago. EVERYTHING they sale at retail is ALWAYS more expensive.... Their stores are huge, full of inventory but always feel empty of shoppers. I like when they discount closeout items...
That's a good point. I'm impressed they've been growing in sales when I haven't seen anything that's a great value there in over 10 years. I'm in the Fort Worth area in the store close to me had a lot of stuff that it was all relatively overpriced. I'm not talking Walmart quality/pricing. Like others in Texas, we have Academy and we also have Cabela's and Bass Pro Shops. It would be interesting to see videos about those companies and see how they're doing by comparison. Keep up the great work here!
I LOVE Academy. When I was looking for plus-size UVA/UVB protective shirts for work, they actually had a variety to choose from! I feel like Dick's has not yet realized that fat people go outside lmao. Plus, like you said, the prices were great.
When I was a kid, I was staying at a friend's house, and his dad was taking us to Dick's. Their neighbor asked "Where you guy's headed?" And his dad yelled "We're going to look at Dick's!"

I live in Houston and the biggest sports/outdoor retailer is a locally-started company called “Academy Sports & Outdoors”. We do have Dicks, but I don’t think they have an edge on Academy (kind of like HEB grocery in Texas having an edge over Walmart or Kroger). Texans have a thing for local, texan businesses. But I always love hearing about a family-started business like Dicks that has managed to be successful.
Dicks it seems has some experiences at their stores that Academy definitely lacks. Though it seems it's not enough to outdo them. I stand with my comment that they need to aggressively push towards experiences if they want to compete with gyms maybe a skatepark or something. Didn't even realize they had golf machines batting cages (I think) or climbing walls until I watched the video. But imo still not enough and I think not every store has it idk. I find Academy incredibly overrated for that reason though bc they are just a retailer and barely more where at least DSG tries to be more than just plain retail. Doesn't help thay theyre massively overpriced on many items. For hunting and such though I admit it's they seems to have the selection needed . Big mistake with DSG to not deal with it as DSG could then have their own shooting range and get a massive edge on Academy no matter how much loyalty the latter has. But DSG still has a presence and they seem to be massive and in bigger prime outlet malls where I do see them vs Academy in strip malls that seem to die easier.
Every time I have gone to Dick's it has been an underwhelming experience that leads to me being thankful that they pushed me to some of their competitors when they first moved into my area.
I haven't been to a Dick's in years. I'm not a sports guy. Last time I went was to grab some hearing protection and ammo before I went to a weapons range. Was surprised to see they stopped carrying anything weapons related. I don't mind it, it's their store, they can do what they want. Unfortunately, I just don't have a reason to go there now.
Dick's was the big sporting goods store when I was getting into school sports, but after they started phasing out hunting and firearms, more people are going to the new Academy Sporting Goods stores opening up everywhere.
I remember standing in line for about 6 hours on Black Friday 2008 with my dad because Dicks made a bunch of their rifles 1/2 off and everyone was afraid Obama was going to ban assault rifles. Last time I ever went there because they eventually got rid of all the 'spooky guns' and 90% of the time I went there it was to buy guns or ammo.
I haven't stepped foot in a Dick's since they went anti-gun. Same goes for REI after their hissy fit over water bottles whose parent company also owned some gun manufacturers.
I'm so glad you made this video. I worked at The Sports Authority for about 5 years and got out just before they tanked. I was also offered a job at Dicks not shortly after I had applied. I turned them down to go into the veterinary field. Best decision of my life.
I gotta mention the name. I've got two stories. I asked my friend, while we were working out in the gym, what he wanted for his birthday. He said a gift card. I said where? He said, "I like Dick's." We both stopped and then bust out laughing. Years later, I'm working in a casino at the main cage. There is a giant projector style TV across from us that is set to a sports channel. A commercial comes on for Dick's Sporting Goods comes on and my coworker from Bulgaria who struggles a little with English pointed at the screen and said, "I like the big Dick's store." She immediately realized what she said and we all had a good laugh.
They also have a habbit of putting them in stripmalls/regular malls. Theres a famous picture that gets passed around of a mall sight that reads "Kholes, staples, dicks"
I've been to Academy Sports + Outdoors a few times. My brother used to work there as well. I can't say they're better than Dick's but I think they're the closest their competition currently.
I just went to my local Dick’s today. I don’t go there often, but I was pleasantly surprised that they remodeled the whole place and it was more open and seemed like they had a lot more product. Really liked the changes they had inside and their staff was really helpful.
Please do a video about the rivalry between Ferrari and Lamborghini. After all, it’s a great story, Lamborghini was founded to get revenge on Ferrari. Plus they’re similar brands, based in the same country. That’s why you should make a video on it.
The local chain when I was a kid was Sport Chalet. I liked it because it had an extreme sports/skiing/snowboarding vibe even though they sold all kinds of things. You could rent a snowboard cheaply nearby, bring it with you to the mountains and then return it when you got back. Sadly they went out of business along with many others during the e-commerce boom in the mid-late 2010s
I used to love this store but I went to Scheels and that’s my go too now. I’ve also noticed when it comes to nike products. They will put sale on it and if you check the price under it it’s 5$ cheaper than the “sale” price.
I work at Dicks Sporting Good's in Fayetteville, NC. Our store is in the middle of being renovated into a House of sport. The project manager told us there should be about 25 of them by the end of the year
Big 5 came before Dick’s in my area. I went into my local Big 5 a few weeks ago and they were busy putting price stickers with higher prices over their own preprinted price tags. I presume it’s only a matter of time before they close up shop.
Yeah there's one Big 5 store just near the 5 freeway where I live an it sure seems like they can't keep up. They still got pretty good stuff though from what I remember.
Dick’s does that too with some stuff, I just bought some shorts online and when they got here I see they just put a 50.00 sticker over the manufacturer tag that said 45.00 MSRP. How much was your markups?
I like that Dicks is putting an emphesis on store brands, thats one of the reasons i use to shop at JC Penney in the 2000s was because their clothing brand was very high quality and often on sale, until it wasn't.
I used to frequent a three story Dick's location (Lenox Marketplace in Atlanta) that used to be a Galyan's and it had a climbing wall until Dick's corporate got rid of it due to liability. I wonder if they'll convert this location to a House of Sport.
I work for the company (not corporate just at the store level) but all the house of sports are bigger than a person can comprehend. Think of a Walmart and then add a second story. That’s how absolutely massive these stores are. I had the pleasure of going up to Minneapolis to set that store up. Anyway, my point is that the store has to be propose built and it would be unlikely for them to convert a normal store into a HOS
the House of Sport seems like a great idea, especially if they allow you to try some of the stuff to see if it suits you, like say you go to buy a bat, you'd be allowed to take a copy of it (basically one of the same bat) and go to the batting cage to try it out to see if you're comfortable with that one or if you need a different model of bat
As an employee of this company, it’s a fantastic experience for the customer. We go above and beyond and bend over backwards for them and do unique things as explained in the video. Dicks sporting goods is phenomenal and I’m witnessing it first hand. Here in Houston they have massive plans for this year and that will be available sooner than later
I’ve been a huge fan of your videos for awhile now, and it was wild hearing you talk about my store (Public Lands)! Ed Stack still has a HUGE say over what happens in our store. Any time we have even a silly little change (like how we fold shirts) it’s due to whatever Ed thinks looks best at that time.
Same here in South Carolina, and Georgia, there is like one Dicks in the area, and I hardly see anyone there, when I pass it. Academy has better prices, and is not anti 2A!!!
Where was Modell's in all this? The New York city-area I would hear commercials for them all the time with their simple slogan of "Got to go to Mo's." Then they faded from existence.
I bought a kayak from Dick's last year, that's the first time I've ever bought anything there. The staff was quite helpful and went above and beyond what I would have ever done when I worked in retail as a wee lad.
Dick’s Sporting Goods basically learned from the mistakes of Sports Authority and they focused on their customers and made lots of efforts into recreations, which is a unique experience that can’t be done by lot of competitors!
In October 2019, the Utah based company Sportsman's Warehouse acquired eight Field & Stream stores. In March 2020, the company acquired two additional stores.
I live in Binghamton and still visit their first store located in Binghamton which is still open to this day. By this summer we'll also have a Dick's House of Sport at former Macy's at Oakdale mall
I liked them well enough but the only sport I participate in anymore is hunting and target shooting, so they made the decision for me to not go back there anymore.
I'm wearing DSG yoga pants as I'm watching this. Those things look good and wear like iron...at a reasonable price. Dick's generally has what you're looking for. True, they may not have the *specific* model of Amphipod handheld water bottle you're looking for, but they'll have one kinda like it if you need one right now. It's the last store where associates actually ask you if you need assistance. That, and their staff is generally very pleasant. And Public Lands is their foray into what I call "trees-and-trails" sports (REI's and EMS' market) as opposed to "teams- and-tailgates" sports (which is Dick's main focus). Since I pass one on my way home, I always reward myself after a visit to the dentist with a visit to PL. And yes, I used to shop at Sports Authority, Herman's and Modell's, as well.
Big props to CM for going a whole 11 minutes and 25 seconds without even the slightest insinuation towards any Dick related jokes. Must've been hard ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Was there on Sunday step daughter needed softball stuff. All I'll say is their prices are rediculous compared to Walmart and Amazon. Really the prices reminded me of prices at Toys R Us compared to Walmart Target and Amazon.
Surprised you didn't bring up Academy! They're about 1/3 of the value at $4B, but certainly deserved more of a spot than Sport's Authority did. Great video nonetheless!
7:41 glad you commented on this. Here in Maryland, Under Armour is huge since it's a local brand. So inside my local Dick's they have their own very sizeable section. It feels the same as an independent Under Armour store but it... isn't.
I recently tried to make my first order from their website and it was a failure. A few days after the order was confirmed I got a message saying the item was out of stock and the order was cancelled. Small sample size but retailers like Amazon never let that happen. I wouldn't waste time ordering again.
Used to go fairly regularly. The organization was great, staff is generally knowledgeable, and the execution behind the “store within a store” concept was superb. Then they dropped the 2A stuff, and they dropped me permanently as a customer. I’m just a drop in the bucket to them, so it won’t make much difference. It sucks that the convenience of them around is gone, but fortunately there are many other options still available.
I went to school with a member of the family who owned Galyan's Trading Post until 1995 (when they sold the chain to The Limited). We lost touch soon after high school; I wonder how he's doing nowadays. It was a big deal in the local papers when Dick's bought Galyan's, since they were founded not far from where I lived. In any case, the original Galyan's Trading Post remained open until they were acquired; the building has since been razed. There's now an Aldi standing where it used to be.
During the rec league , little league and high school football era for our family , never made a purchase at Dicks. It simply was never the best choice. So good for them that they somehow are successful
Never liked Dicks Sporting Goods. They don't carry the high end fitness apparel I like (UnderArmour is NOT high end, and has trended downwards in quality in the past decade, and made a mess of MyFitnessPal after they acquired it). Their home gym equipment is pretty budget tier as well. Plus their anti hunting stance is offputting to me. Sports Authority was so much better IMO.
Hey man, I really love your videos as they are quite informative. I think you should do one on Big 5 Sporting Goods. While they may not be a huge competitor to Dick’s, they do have there own little niche market that serves them pretty well and have a loyal fan base that is steadily growing. I would really love to see what your thoughts on that are, and think that would make for quite a great video to add to your collection.
I don’t like Dick’s. They conned me out of some personal data claiming it was a state law when you purchased certain items. I fell for it but I will not be forgetting that.

6:54 The Field and Stream stores were closed so they can distance themselves from Field and Stream magazine and their focus on hunting and gun sales, which Dick's doesn't do anymore. It was replaced by Public Lands which focus on camping and outdoors stuff.

the House of Sport seems like a great idea, especially if they allow you to try some of the stuff to see if it suits you, like say you go to buy a bat, you'd be allowed to take a copy of it (basically one of the same bat) and go to the batting cage to try it out to see if you're comfortable with that one or if you need a different model of bat
Honestly the writing was on the wall for Sports Authority once they merged Chick's with Dicks
Sporting Goods
I just bought my mountain bike from DSG. the guy was courteous and helpful and knows a lot about bicycles because he's an actual bike mechanic
Disappointed this wasn't in the "bigger than you know" category .
"Dicks: Bigger than you Know" is a fantastic title to say out loud
Do Academy Sports & Outdoors next!!!
Babe, wake up! Company Man just uploaded.
Man you could have stooped to using a pun for a video title, but you resisted that sweet, sweet temptation, respect.
Their name is itself evident!
My brother worked for Dick's sportings goods ... he summed it up as "a clothing store that calls itself a sporting goods store"
You should talk about Academy sports
Just went to Binghamton recently and went to the first store. Still open to this day!
Academy Sports and Outdoors is huge in Houston.
Mr and Mrs. Stack legit chose that name for their newborn son
Dick didn't mean that back then
I bought a kayak from Dick's last year, that's the first time I've ever bought anything there.
Yup the progress is going well. Always cool to see it being worked on.
Reminds me of
- DikinBaus Hot Dogs
- Sneed's Feed and Seed (Previously Chuck's)
Modell's is the 1st place that comes to my mind regarding sports stores.
I liked them well enough but the only sport I participate in anymore is hunting and target shooting, so they made the decision for me to not go back there anymore.
I feel like their biggest competitor now is probably Academy.
Store within a store... We used to call that a department store.
Dick Stack sounds like a recurring dream of mine.
A better title would be, "Why Dick's Sporting Goods always has the succ".
as someone from binghamton i appreciate you being able to pronounce it correctly.
Lmao the founders name is legendary.
Got that right, and even compared to Academy they are insane.
If you want name brand quality stuff then dicks is the spot.
What about Academy Sports? Have you ever done them?
Surprised no mention of Modells
Right?
Can you do Academy Sports and Outdoors?!
Surprised you didn't bring up Academy! They're about 1/3 of the value at $4B, but certainly deserved more of a spot than Sport's Authority did. Great video nonetheless!
"Dick's buys Chick's"! Headline of the century!
Dick Stack. What a name
😂
7:41 glad you commented on this. Here in Maryland, Under Armour is huge since it's a local brand. So inside my local Dick's they have their own very sizeable section. It feels the same as an independent Under Armour store but it... isn't.
If they sell staples at Staples, does that mean...
Sneed's Feed and Seed
Previously Chuck's
"Dick's Buys Chick's" is a helluva headline 😅
I'd never go to this store given their attack on gun rights. They've rarely had any equipment I was looking for when I went there anyway.
Boo boo snowflake
I Miss MODELLS, it was in my area for years. Now only sports shop is Dicks and Rally house. Still waiting for your Roy Rodgers restaurant review.
I have the choice between Dick's and Academy... I always choose Academy
I recently tried to make my first order from their website and it was a failure. A few days after the order was confirmed I got a message saying the item was out of stock and the order was cancelled. Small sample size but retailers like Amazon never let that happen. I wouldn't waste time ordering again.
removing "sporting goods" makes this 10x funnier
well yes lol. they better hope they don't lose an S from their store signs
Thank you for posting the video. I've always wondered about the growth of Dick's Sporting Goods Store.
Dick Stack was my nickname in high school
10:05 we have seen your typo lol. 1.7 billion, 1,7000,000,000. Enjoy watching these videos every week.
I've watched every video Company Man has put on YT and this is the first time I've noticed an error 😮
Sports Authority used to be my favorite growing up, but have to hand it to DSG, their in store customer service is on point.
Its pretty simple on why they are successful, its the name.
Came here for this
Do you have a video on Dunham’s Sports? They was pretty popular here in Wisconsin in the 90’s and 00’s. Don’t know how big they actually was overall
The Dick's close to me has turned into a glorified clothing store. Very little actual sports equipment in store.
I live in Binghamton NY, Dicks is currently building what will be their biggest store ever here.
also their 3rd ever store is still standing here
“Dick Stack” what a name lol
I live in Knoxville, where the 1st House of Sport opened! It is an amazing store and I go all the time!
I don’t like Dick’s. They conned me out of some personal data claiming it was a state law when you purchased certain items. I fell for it but I will not be forgetting that.
Thanks for teaching the inspiring history of Dick Stack
I stopped shopping at Dick's when they decided to go anti-second amendment several years ago.
I hope Compan Man could upload a Why They're Successful video on Circle K in the future.

Not selling guns and ammo has hurt their business immensely. Walmart made the same mistake after Columbine and eventually walked it back.
You obviously didn't see the graph of profits/sales
Not at all, people actually go there to get equipment for actual sports
6:54 The Field and Stream stores were closed so they can distance themselves from Field and Stream magazine and their focus on hunting and gun sales, which Dick's doesn't do anymore. It was replaced by Public Lands which focus on camping and outdoors stuff.
