I can't say this album changed my life, but after seeing the video for weve had enough this album was my first favorite at a pivotal point in my life. Thanks for uploading everything. Ive liced you guys since 04, but just found your channel. I also dont feel had for being the 70th comment.
Been a big fan of Alkaline Trio and The Suicide Machines for years! I just know came across your youtube channel! It's awesome that you have this, it's cool! I can't wait to hear the upcoming album, and see you guys play! I always try to go when you guys come around Ohio!
Derek, I'm sad you are not in the band anymore! But I've still been watching you these last 20 years or more! You made Trio Whole, and I also love the fact that you always got Matt and Dan to play all of the old stuff! You kept it real, and you are an amazing punk rock drummer! I would love to ask you to play drums for me, but I heard that the touring became too much for you and the alkaline trio, I'm a 39-year-old that grew up with punk rock in the 90s, and you don't hear those type of bands anymore, I grew up singing, playing guitar, and writing lyrics. If you are ever interested in being in another punk rock band from the 90's, Please give me a shout out.
I wouldn't require playing shows 100% of the time, I'd be happy making records, making merch, making videos, and playing live shows every few years. I've actually already met you at least seven or eight times, I'm from michigan, and I grew up in the 90s punk rock scene, we actually got along quite well when we met each other, so if you're ever interested in being in another band but playing less shows, I would be willing to do that
Thanks Mike, that's really nice of you to say. Bill was one of my early influences and I've learned so much from watching him play over the years. I met him at an ALL show when I was about 15 years old. He was working on a setlist for that night and he asked if I wanted to hear anything. I rattled off a few deep cuts, I remember Uranus (from The Descendents "ALL" album) being one of them. He explained to me that they hadn't played any of those songs in a long time and would have to rehearse them first. Bill's version of the story has me saying that I could play the songs better than him and challenging him to some sort of drum-off - I don't remember it that way.
Very cool, Derek. Watching you play is fun for me, you were always a big influence on my drumming. Haven't got to play in over 2 yrs and I'm jones-ing. This did not help!!!
yo dude didn't even know this existed this was a joy to watch! you should come down to st.aug FL and play some shows with Dan. I'd shit a break haven't seen you live since the my chem/Reggie in the full effect tour in 05 I think
Hey man I gotta ask, did you guys live track this album or did you and Dan play to a click??? I tried putting Sadie to a click so I could do a drum cover but I could never get it to sit right
Nick, there was a click, but it was tempo mapped based on preproduction recordings we had done. That way we could push or pull the feel of each part of the song. Hope that helps.
Hey Derek Hope all is well man I was watching the studio deep cut for crimson and on the song board you have Pewk listed as well as Derek I’m assuming you used Derek as a place holder for Prevent This Tragedy BUT my actual question is what became of pewk? Did you guys place it on b-sides for Agony & Irony and rename it In My Stomach? And if not have we heard it? or are you guys still trying to find the perfect spot for it? ITTC is a great fucking album as well man so thank you very much for giving us that gem❤️ Have a good day be safe And once again thank you for all the incredible Drumming over the years Trio would no longer be Trio without your style ,finesse, and all around bad assery on the kit ❤️ - Mike D
PEWK was the working title for Prevent This Tragedy. That's how it was labeled on the first batch of demos Matt did for the album. The song we were calling Derek became Don't Say You Won't which was released as a b-side. I wrote the song for the album, but it needed lyrics and a melody. We recorded it as an instrumental (I believe it was one of the first songs that we tracked), and towards the end of the session Matt, and Dan each wrote lyrics and took a crack at singing the song. Matt's version was called "Royal Blue" (which was really just a rough sketch - you can hear it here: soundcloud.com/derekgrant/alkaline-trio-royal-blue-demo?in=derekgrant/sets/the-drg-archive), Dan's version was more complete, so that's the one that we released. I hope that clears things up.
Yeah that did Thanks for writing back man appreciate it I was assuming there was an unreleased Trio song we had never heard but have definitely heard and loved both of those tunes ...Fiancé is sleeping for work so Ill check out that Matt cut in a bit have a good day be safe 🙂✌️❤️
Love this video! Would still like to send you a letter. Can I get a fan e-mail? My boss recorded with Jerry Finn at Conway Studios a few years before you did!
Hi! Jerry was an amazing person. I met him in 1995 with the Suicide Machines, then lost touch until the Trio recorded "Good Mourning" I feel so fortunate to have known him, and working with him was always a blast. My email address should be in my UA-cam profile. If you can't find it there, you can always contact me through my site: www.merchanddestroy.com
Hey Gregory, we auditioned a lot of cymbals to find ones that we liked, and sometimes we would change them to suit a particular song, so it's hard to remember exactly what was used. From the footage it looks like 14" Zildjian's, and possibly 13"s on songs like "Prevent This Tragedy" and "Burn" - what series they were, I can't recall.
Inertia, we go way back! Jerry Finn (Producer) and Ryan Hewitt (Engineer) worked with Blink as well, so we had some of their stuff in the studio. Jerry had so much guitar & bass gear, it was incredible.
hi dereck, inertia is just me on a different account because i forgot the password, and thats awesome, i loved jerrys producing particularly on this album, from here to infirmary and blinks enema of the state. i love your drum sound on this album and i cant find what hats youare using - could you remember? cheers
Jerry Finn what a producer! such a shame he passed. Im glad you got to write a number fantastic albums with him. 👍
YNWA ❤️
Your part on "Don't Say You Won't" is REALLY insane. REALLY insane. Exceptional work, DG! Love your drumming.
Intro to "Time to Waste" still gives me chills. Wowza!
The perfect decay in this room!
Derek is very underrated, I love Blink and Travis is great but DG is even better and doesn't get the recognition he deserves. Plus he's just cool AF
Yoooo exactly!!! Like Travis might be a “more talented” I guess you could say drummer, but Derek is my number 1 favorite drummer of all time.
This album made me want to be a drummer. Love it!
Are you a drummer now?
I love the two rack tom setup with both of them to the left of the kick drum.

Hope you're doing okay Derek. Was sad to hear you weren't going to be there on Saturday. Hope all is well man.
I could watch Derek play drums all day
Oohh Time to Waste, i can sit all day just watching Derek do his 16 beats with odd hi hat opens in between, it very hypnotic
Derek is so talented, my goodness. I loved the drumming on Time to Waste, so incredibly siiiiiickkk
Derek is so fucking awesome
Subscribed. Not to sound fanboyish, but i've always been a big fan of your drumming. Very unique. Thanks for uploading!
Love and respect to Alc3 from Russia! Thank you Derek for nice video. Thank you guys, for making such a good music!
Big influence on our band.
Cheers from the UK

Derek, you're easily one of the most technical punk drummers along with the mighty Bill Stevenson!

Best drummer ever!
Drum machine Grant
Derek, do you have any recording of other albums? Like my shame is true, Remains..Anything. I love it!
Don’t Say You Won’t and We Can Never Break Up is basically Remains.
Derek...idk..just fuck yes! this shit is awesome!
Derek, how are you playing the drum so effortlessy but still sound awesome

hey Derek! I was wondering if I could get some tips on how to get that snare sound on burn. I love that sound man! :) awesome stuff as always.
One of my favorite drummers. How many songs on this album did you one take on?
Blink 182 stuff in studio. Foreshadowing

Where do you see that at
his bass drum. under the little blanket. you can see it has the odd melted shape of a teslar bass drum.
