  • Join my daughter and I on our unplanned and unscripted tour of one of Indiana’s top ten endangered historic buildings, the Chapman J. Root home in Terre Haute, Indiana.
    Mr Root was the owner of the Root Glass Factory. He is best remembered for designing and patenting the world famous contour Coca-Cola bottle. Root’s estate, aka Rocky Edge, included a party house, indoor swimming pool, greenhouse, aviary, bar and ballroom. The swimming pool, Greenhouse and Aviary was constructed by the same company that built the New York Botanical Gardens. The home itself was built in 1920.
    The elaborately tiered landscaped property also included a small zoo that housed a bear, peacocks, and a variety of other birds.
    I wish I had researched the property prior to our visit so I could’ve been a better tour guide and seen some things we missed, such as the hidden room underneath the stone structure between the Gatehouse and the home. To learn more about the home, I highly recommend you go to this link:
