Not my AOTY, but only recently discovered No Hands by Joey Valence and Brae. And it's the itch I've been wanting scratched for YEARS now. It's not a GNX, but doesn't need to be to become a great album
No Hands was much more enjoyable than GNX for me. And the bangers hit even harder. Even though GNX is a solid album, it does feel more like just a victory lap for Kendrick, it’s far from some of his very best stuff.
Bro nobody talking about the WILLOW album, it is insanely well written and well produced the mixes are unmatched. everything from the song writing to the virtuosity of every note being played or sung is unbelievable, loved it so much. Definitely album of the year for me.
It's definitely a top 10 album for me this year, and in my opinion, it didn't get the love it deserved. But also, I think there's potential for Willow to do even better and release a true masterpiece in the near future.
Yall appreciate willow for supposed “technical abilities” I appreciate willow because she’s taking success that indie musicians don’t deserve We are not the same
It’s one of the best albums of the year, my biggest special interest of all time is music theory so this was an absolute treat, though I must say that some of the songs are underwhelming, and the lyrics don’t do it justice most of the time.
To me as an overall album it doesn't hit as hard as Coping Mechanism, but I gotta say, Symptoms of life is so incredible. Def one of my favourite songs this year. Most of the rest of the album doesn't hold up as much imo
Vylet Pony - Monarch of Monsters. It’s such an ambitious and cathartic project that’s pulled off so well. The songwriting, vocal performances, and production are all so well done.

My fantano glaze: i said on the top 50 thread that my new sis-in-law Julia holter played a version of “the book of love” for our wedding. She just sent me the recording. It’s amazing and would be a major pop hit for her I’m sure. But she doesn’t do that-she does her version of the pop song in her head, puts that on record, and releases it. And fantano is there to promote her work, both because he loves it but also because he doesn’t demand that the art he loves fit into simple categories. In that he is a unique voice in the music community and I am so appreciative that he’s been there to not only give Julia the love she deserves but to introduce me to so many other acts who just do what they want and don’t adhere to some formula. Happy holidays everyone!!!
I haven’t seen anybody mention Billie Eilish’s Hit Me Hard and Soft yet (yes I know, very bold pick), but a majority of those songs have been in my rotation since it dropped, and the album holistically speaking as well is just a well-sequenced tapestry that I find goes down easy but is also rewarding and adventurous, something I think the abstract-ish title is meant to reflect. Dunno if it’s quite my AotY at this stage, that‘s simply gotta be Knocked Loose or Poppy, but it was absolutely my fave pop release in what I’d consider a pretty banner year.
I couldn’t agree more - another unpopular opinion I have is that it’s her best album yet (and I have been a fan since the don’t smile at me era), there is such a range of emotions in the songs, more upbeat and pop sounding (like Lunch and BOAF), and then you have the emotionally rich and vulnerable songs (Skinny, The Greatest & Wildflower, with The Greatest being my favourite off of the album), as well as so many songs having such a unique soundscape and immense production (Chihiro & Bittersuite especially). I just think she and Finneas absolutely aced this album, and it is one which is very regularly in my rotation. Really hope she wins AOTY for it at the grammys. What is your ranking of the songs from the album?
It may not have been 'the' album of the year for me, but certainly 'an' album of the year for me is Omar Apollo's God Said No. That album felt like such a good project with highs and lows, good pacing, and seeing him perform many of the songs live and sing his heart out (literally at times as I heard him getting a bit tired towards the end), I really enjoyed listening to it multiple times. It's such an intimate album that feels personal, but not too contrived or generic. I could even hear some of the stories and struggles referenced in my own life or in others lives in a way that just felt right. Great listen, and much improved over his previous works in my opinion.
bright future by adrianne lenker is 100% my album of the year, its deeply personal, raw, and every single moment on that album is exactly where it should be and i love every second of every track

I brought it up in the community post but I’ll say again here that, while maybe not the best album of the entire year, as a Priest fan I was so happy with Invincible Shield. It was already insane that with Firepower they released an album that is handily within the top 5 of their catalogue after almost 50 years of making music, but to do it again 6 years later is insane, and really shows why they have the legacy they do
Big Ideas. Ngl I love Remi Wolf so my opinion may be biased, but this latest album of hers is so well-rounded. It's a treat in how many songs on it have me coming back again and again. I feel Heavy Metal by Cameron Winter is being slept on, it came late in the year but there is no doubt in my mind that is a solid ass album back to front
Killer album. Especially for hardcore Porter fans. Starts with the chaos and gradually unfurls the appreciation and struggles Porter has with himself & his fanbase. Extremely authentic & blissful
YWGBYST has killer instrumentation, thought-provoking lyrics, good production, and a sense of urgency that I love in hardcore music. It also surprised me with how much I dislike the vocal performance. Vocals felt monotonous and I checked out of that side of the album pretty easily, each time I ran through it. 6 or maybe 7/10, from me.
My personal favorite album was Porter Robinson. I enjoyed it on my first listens but also felt a bit underwhelmed because it didn’t have the adventurous sweeping tracks that Nurture had. But the most I listened to Smile the more I fell in love with it. It’s basically a catchy pop album with really introspective lyrics about depression, pain, self doubt. I don’t know Porter does it but he’s able to balance these things without coming off whiny or cringe. Even when his lyrics become tongue in cheek on a couple of tracks you can’t help but be charmed by his earnestness. At least for me this is a perfect pop album. I can put it on any time and listen to it front to back. I also think his production and how he constructs his songs are a cut above the rest when it comes to this genre. Do I think it’s the technical best album of the year? No. But it’s personally the one I’ve been enjoying the most.
While I'm very happy for the knocked loose boys, I can't really enjoy anything after laugh tracks. I found them about a week after it dropped, and it and pop culture just blew my little 8th grader mind. I haven't been able to get into anything they did after the fact and I stopped going to see them after the different shade of blue tour. They're incredibly and deserve all the love they get, it just makes me sad I don't like them like I used to.
Honestly my top favorite album of the year was probably Frog in Boiling Water. I know a lot of other DIIV fans were underwhelmed but I loved it instantly and still do. Deceiver is my favorite album of theirs so I really love the more shoegaze sound but I know a lot of people are still more into their earlier stuff. But man I loved fibw and I thought their promotion of it was so cool and different and I love how they carried that over into their live shows too. I just love DIIV lol. Honorable mention is Chrome is Lullaby and hnk’s audiotree session lol
Scrolled through all 715 comments and no one mentioned my AOTY. Friko - Where We’ve Been, Where Do We Go From Here is imo absolutely flawless and didn’t receive the recognition it deserved at ALL. It’s anthemic, dark, raw, emotional, introspective.. everything I want in an album. It sounds like a natural continuation of early Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse, Bright Eyes, Built to Spill, all that stuff . Disappointed fantano didn’t review it, i doubt he knows about it but damn that record really really affected me and it’d be nice to see someone else appreciate it in the same vein
scrolled way too far to see this! it wasn’t my aoty, but it 100% was in my top ten. i think her, faye, and clairo were absolutely on the same level album-wise. her and clairo dropping on the same day was generational lol
Redman Muddy Waters Too has really topped the year off for me! Ive almost forgotten about Blue Lips, Soul Burger, Chromakopia, Common and Pete Rocks album, and Freddy Gibbs.. It was a really good year for music but unfortunately GNX, Jack Whites No Name album and now Redmans Muddy Waters Too have all blown me away and have absolutely fullfilled all my musical desires. Great timing by all 3 artists. Jack White not even telling anyone or naming the album made it very exciting to find out its so White Stripes Era. I had to order the greatest hits by White Stripes on Vinyl I got so excited. I have all the albums on vinyl I didnt even need the greatest hits lol. Very wise by Mr White. GNX was the oppisite with a huge build up and very strategic with the Beef. He always comes out and stirs up the industry before he drops and he gets a huge buzz going (control verse being a classic example) at this point I dont think Kendrick can miss. Hes too focused and disciplined to slip, his album run has been incredible and I beleige hes the first to be on his way to being up there with Jay Zs 13 platinum album run, Kdot will ptobably be better because the albums are classics and possibly more influenctial culturally. Redman I know he said the 24th of December for his album but if you've been waiting 10 years for it to drop like I have you stop paying attention to the 'its coming soon' but holy shit am i happy he waited and got his beats and samples cleared properly like he wanted so he could put it together exactly how he intended and its probably one of his best albums. As a sequel it had alot of hype to live up too and its the same style but better, straight timeless! Nothing brings me more joy than a Redman album! The energy, the skits, the arrogance, the insults, the threats of violence, the humour, the gorilla ad libs and dog barks, WKY Radio theme, the derogatory, his romance with weed, soopaman luvva ,the shout outs to all the greats, the nostalgia, the ridiculousness of it all and of course the wit and beats are phenomenal. Redman is a national treasure hes been black balled by the industry and made it hard for him to drop an album with beat clearances and lack of fund's to fight it. So he dropped remixes and mixtapes for ten years non stop instead for no profit. It doesnt get more hip hop than that hes an absoulte titan and if youve paid attention to his carer hes definetely the GOAT. No one has the consistency, longevity, energy, realness and integrity like Hes done it. He still owns that flat from MTV Cribs and lives hood. He lives comfortable for a normal person but is by no means rich or financially successful for what hes done in hiphop and even being a movie star in the 2000s Rant over, Im on my bulshit this week! Redman album is the absolute bomb!!
MGMT Loss of Life was an album I just kept revisiting. It’s one that has just kept growing on me with every listen and is slowly becoming one of my personal favorite albums of all time. It’s a no words kind of album, something you really just have to experience.
The story so far, knocked loose, tropidelic, intervals, and aurorawave were my top 5 but it's hard to decide cuz so much good music came out this year. New state champs album was pretty rad too. As far as singles go, shadow of intent wins all day.
I didn't really get the appeal of the new Intervals record. I loved Circadian, but this one just felt disjointed and rambling. But who am I to say, since my favorite was Cure by ERRA, and it seemed to make no noise in the community.
Alligator Bites Never Heal is my album of the year, or Short n' Sweet. I know that ABNH may not be the most polished record but it's been my fave listen. I also have listened to Short n' Sweet a trillion times and its an incredibly solid pop record with no skips
for me, not necessarily the best of the year, but the favourites are "magpie" by peach pit, "manning fireworks" by MJ Lenderman, "this could be Texas" by English teacher and "real deal" by honeyglaze. All beautiful albums with both vibey and emotionally complex tracks
Finally a comment with my thoughts. To me personally, Clancy is my album of the year. I can always come back to it, the music is great, the production, the writing... everything.
I honestly, genuinely, legitimately enjoyed Vultures 1. Stars, Keys to my life, Hoodrat, Burn, and Beg forgiveness are straight fire. Paperwork was very creative and a great Brazilian Funk/hip hop track. However, the songs Paid, Back to me, Do it, Fuk sumn, and Vultures were very mid. Then you had Talking, Carnival, Problematic, and King which are dog shit. Overall I’d give the album a 6 but it had five songs I consider 8s. I’d give album of the year to JPEG
Chromakopia is my only. I never rarely get into a whole album. Usually just singles and sometimes I'll look at a couple other songs but Chromakopia has been a constant for me since it's release.
Ok but Dune Pt 2 is so valid because it's got insane value on its own as an orchestral production. Nobody really contests Hans Zimmers ability and genius, but Dune pt 2 is mastery of the soundtrack medium. If we start getting best movie score reviews I will be SAT and ready
JLIN - AKOMA was my album of the year, but Chelsea, Magdalena Bay, Spirit Of The Beehive, Floating Points round out my top 5. Some amazing music this year boiiiiiii
Personally, as a metal/heavy music fan, I feel like I'm the only one who doesn't love the knocked loose album. I can acknowledge the flow of the album working quite well, and I respect the band immensely for the spotlight they brought to the heavy music sphere, but I just don't personally like the style that Knocked Loose brings, and it feels somewhat shallow compared to most of what I personally listen to. Some of my favorite albums that I heard this year were Allt's From The New World, and Caligula's Horse's Charcoal Grace.

I feel Heavy Metal by Cameron Winter is being slept on, it came late in the year but there is no doubt in my mind that is a solid ass album back to front
Damn it must have taken a lot of restraint from Melon to not even mention the Greep’s name
From gradiohead?
@@cerealenjoyer3000 No, from Bon Iver
for what feels a bit like a black midi b-side LP, the new sound is fucking stellar. not enough people are fucking with it and it makes me sad
ILDMLFY, Samurai, and Imaginal Disk were all highlights
This is so true
SMILE! :D
Killer album. Especially for hardcore Porter fans. Starts with the chaos and gradually unfurls the appreciation and struggles Porter has with himself & his fanbase. Extremely authentic & blissful
Cutouts > Wall of Eyes
Cutouts is a Strong 8 - light 9 imo
@@marklawd91 what does that have to do with what I said mister hal9000
YWGBYST has killer instrumentation, thought-provoking lyrics, good production, and a sense of urgency that I love in hardcore music. It also surprised me with how much I dislike the vocal performance. Vocals felt monotonous and I checked out of that side of the album pretty easily, each time I ran through it. 6 or maybe 7/10, from me.
Not seeing anyone in these comments mentioning Quadeca's SCRAPYARD is hurting my soul
Not enough Cool World recognition here
Pretty sure it's my aoty.
100% AOTY alongside the new Thou album
The Knocked Loose album made me interested in a genre of music I had never really given the light of day, easily one of my favorite albums of the year
While I'm very happy for the knocked loose boys, I can't really enjoy anything after laugh tracks.
I went through this with The Devil Wears Prada about 15 years ago. Smh.
Knocked Loose will sound like Linkin Park in 2 years
Mk.gee not even making your top 60 is utterly insane
was here to say this, i’m proudly part of the mkgee Mob
Agree 100%
GNX also came out when I was in the hospital but that's not that unusual because I work in a hospital
No the new sound geordie greep is crazy
I played Imaginal Disk more than any other album this year
Bright Future by Adrianne Lenker not getting a single shout for AOTY is criminal
For me it's prolly Glimmer of God. Love the prince inspo, and the instrumentals were just beautiful.
5:07 “that’s what it should be dune” nice pun melon
Remi deserved a placement in the top 50, that's all I'm going to say 🙃
scrolled way too far to see this! it wasn’t my aoty, but it 100% was in my top ten. i think her, faye, and clairo were absolutely on the same level album-wise. her and clairo dropping on the same day was generational lol
My favorite this year is Two Star & the Dream Police. I don’t think it’s the best album of the year, but it’s my favorite.
Koyaanisqatsi is the only soundtrack that’s movie and album of the year in the same year.
No Title as of 13 February 2024 28,340 Dead - Godspeed you! Black emperor
If an album had a cross on the album art (knocked loose, Peggy, chat pile) this year, then it's a goated album
IMAGINAL DISK AHHHHHHHH
Caju by Lineker was one of the best, if not THE best album to come out in the Brazilian music scene in 2024. Great fucking stuff.
anyone know the song playing over the sponsors at 10:39?
it’s I spoke with a fish - Mount Eerie, definitely the best of Phil’s new album
It’s between Dark Times and ILDMLFY, no ither album touches these. My personal pick is ILDMLFY.
He lives comfortable for a normal person but is by no means rich or financially successful for what hes done in hiphop and even being a movie star in the 2000s
Rant over, Im on my bulshit this week! Redman album is the absolute bomb!!
Dopethrone is still my album of this year.
MGMT Loss of Life was an album I just kept revisiting. It’s one that has just kept growing on me with every listen and is slowly becoming one of my personal favorite albums of all time. It’s a no words kind of album, something you really just have to experience.
For me it’s definitely ILDMLFY, The Collective, of 13’ Frank Beltrame. This year was quite good for experimental music.
Blood Incantation’s Absolute Eleswhere went FUCKING HARD this year.
8:20 LOVING the ep2 shoutout. My fave peggy project honestly
Diamond Jubilee - Cindy Lee
200 Stab Wounds - Manual Manic Procedures 🤘
hyperdrama by justice, boy by 2hollis and i lay down my life for you by jpegmafia are my favs from this year
Intro is clearly a parody of Finn McKenty
From cars?
The JPEG album or Chromakopia for me. A lot of GREAT albums this year so it was hard but honestly these 2 are my most replayed
for me, not necessarily the best of the year, but the favourites are "magpie" by peach pit, "manning fireworks" by MJ Lenderman, "this could be Texas" by English teacher and "real deal" by honeyglaze. All beautiful albums with both vibey and emotionally complex tracks
Blood Incantation-Absolute Elsewhere
great ronnie radke impression at the beginning until like 30 seconds in
i wish more people talked about night palace by mount eerie, such an amazing album that i felt went under the radar this year, my personal AOTY
I liked clancy a lot
I liked clancy a lot too
Finally a comment with my thoughts. To me personally, Clancy is my album of the year. I can always come back to it, the music is great, the production, the writing... everything.
Yeah I also liked clancy a lot
I honestly, genuinely, legitimately enjoyed Vultures 1. Stars, Keys to my life, Hoodrat, Burn, and Beg forgiveness are straight fire. Paperwork was very creative and a great Brazilian Funk/hip hop track. However, the songs Paid, Back to me, Do it, Fuk sumn, and Vultures were very mid. Then you had Talking, Carnival, Problematic, and King which are dog shit. Overall I’d give the album a 6 but it had five songs I consider 8s.
I’d give album of the year to JPEG
The new Xiu Xiu album is my album of the year 🥰
Chromakopia is my only. I never rarely get into a whole album. Usually just singles and sometimes I'll look at a couple other songs but Chromakopia has been a constant for me since it's release.
the new sound by georgie greep 👁️👁️
Nice of you featuring the meat canyon fantano during the intro. I always appreciate when huge UA-camr give smaller ones a chance
Looks like I missed a few good albums this year, will check 'em out now, thanks
JLIN - AKOMA was my album of the year, but Chelsea, Magdalena Bay, Spirit Of The Beehive, Floating Points round out my top 5. Some amazing music this year boiiiiiii
My top 4 of the year are literally the thumbnail. Agreed.
I'll stop mentioning Liana Flores - Flower of the Soul getting snubbed when it stops getting snubbed
Only one correct answer: Knocked Loose-“You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To”
Personally, as a metal/heavy music fan, I feel like I'm the only one who doesn't love the knocked loose album.
I already thought this was a wicked year for music. Turns out, there's so many more albums to check out!
