You couldn’t be more right; the new generation is running and restoring locomotives, but more people are needed to pass the torch and keep the skills and knowledge alive!
I remember Barry Island trainyard back in the 70's. We used to go there frequently with my mum so that myself and my brother could play on the old steam trains. I remember vividly seeing about 20 brake vans on the same track, all in a row. Another vivid memory was seeing a young plant growing in the front part of a boiler. A green contrast against the dark depths of the old train's boiler. I wish I had a camera back then to take such a picture. I wish I could describe to you the thrill of climbing on the old coal and sometimes diesel locomotives back then.
I ve been banging on about this for years, but context is key. It’s the glue that knits the exhibits together, I’d much rather see a living museum, than a collection of objects.
Well done Lawrie. You are so right. We nearly lost theChemin de Fer du Vivarais because there were no young volunteers to pick up the torch. It was saved, but only just by a commercial operator.Such a shame as there is very litt volunteer involvement now.
This has been a great series. I do like how most railways theme there railways. I know a lot of the larger preserved railways tend to theme stations in different time periods. Subtly the Severn Valley Railway have Kidderminster as a 1930's terminus station, Bewdley, Highley as a 1900's-1920's station, Arley is a 1940's themed station (due to many war time themed films and TV shows) and HamptonLode has a 1930's station theme. Similar thing goes on at the Great Central as well.
Great video, thanks Lawrie. Yesterday, I had a day out on the Severn Valley Railway. It was great to see some keen young volunteers there, along with all the old hands. All of their stations and rolling stock are beautifully restored too. I can just about remember how they started out on a far less grand scale, with just short rides from Bridgnorth. Now they run from Bridgnorth to Kidderminster and serve many attractions along the way.
Still true in 2024. This is a bit of a 'spot the railway' video. Surprised and delighted to see that snippet of "Slough Estates No. 3" in steam, and then a view of it in pieces (both on the Middleton Railway).
Nicely said Lawrie on the saviour's of our heritage locos & lines , to make a railway just like it was is an undertaking not for the faint hearted , pity folks don't feel this way about the new racing Jaguar lightweights , great video & when I retire from mainline service in about 18 months I might pop over & help as I'm not too far from Whitwell 😊
So right , it's an amazing fact , humans at there best , that's what we do best , problem solving and building and preserving , the whole nation can enjoy !
Thanks for yet another great vid, this series and particularly this vid do a great job of advertising the movement and hopefully with what you do (and others) draws more people into doing it
We are just back from a local STEAM UP. This is after a Narrow Gauge weekend at Rugby. What was lovely that in one of the many sheds and covered areas were 4 boys lighting up and running some Mamod stuff and enjoying every moment. Others were enjoying running round the house driving some battery locos. A friend had with him his SPEEDY and the other (Apart from about 8 traction engines) was a maid of Kent. Very enjoyable. David and Lily.
That’s an old video of the Kirklees light railway sorry whistlestop valley now. Only reason I know that used to volunteer there before Covid and owl was fully black
Ooh.... very careful about the GVT, there are two factions running there. One is working with the council and the local populice, plus Cadw. And the other is we are going to do this......... Can of worms.
Still high. Hence why quite a few railways are running half steam and diesel services or reduced services. Only exceptions are steam gala's or 1940's events where full steam is required.
Not sure if it’s the right thing to say but covid has really affected volunteers, clubs, social events etc. no one seems to want to go out and be sociable or take up a hobby.

Over from the US I've been following the work done on the Corris on the internet since the late 1990's.

Restoration- a great way to bring history alive. Long live the railways
This whole series of "love your railway" has been truly inspirational. I really hope you'll consider doing another series soon.

Ther is Nothing as powerful as people that care together. That dream together. Dreams can change the world and bring the past back to live.
I really enjoyed love your railway
Thanks for your kind comments! We'll love to have you here one day!
I look forward to visiting!

Great video
Excellent video as always Lawrie, and such true words 👍
I always enjoy it.
I sure do love my railway! (underconstruction 5 inch railway :) )

Lovely video lawrie❤
Enjoyed this series very much, think I will bung the GVT a few bob.
This is awesome and now I want my own railway
I laki stream engine 🚂😍
Not sure many people look at 303 and think 'prime candidate'. That's what makes everyone at LMM so... special 😀
Love your passion
This is definitely cool way to look at it, got a railroad like the one your talking about called the east broad top in the in the states
Dai Woodham at Barry performed a great service to railway preservation, he could so easily have scrapped locos as they came in.
He did cut up quite a lot
He just realised it was more cost effective to cut up wagons and have locomotives for later

First things i saw i thought this video is oin 4k!
Wise words Lawrie, do you have an eta of the cream n green dream you filmed with my brother up in Yorkshire the other year?
4th to comment, thanks for the video, it was great😊
I have an idea for you, travel around the world using railway.
It would be awesome! :D
If only I had the money!
@@lmm true enough
What is the length of the corris railway please
Yay I'm early
Time to watch something not depressing...
everytime lawrie says "restoration" take a shot

I know I have asked this, but what colour will the rescued Ruston 48 Diesel be?
It'll be similar to how it was in service
@@lmm Like BR Green?
@@Tombola1993 Ruston Green
0:35 That would be somewhere in China, right?
It is!
Talking about steam trains how is the supply and price of coal doing?

Looking at the title you put on the video you could do a parody of More Than a Woman
I often feel like young people would get turned away because they're young. I hope that's not the case.
Well lawrie looks like Hyce and tha gang are calling you out so what are you going to do about it 😊👍
I'm pretty sure not a single loco from "Barry" was ever scrapped!
There were a few, I believe
but that's because they were too rusty to repair or something like that
Barry did cut some locomotives up in the early years and 2 locomotives in 1980 I think 9f 92085 and a larg prarie
Quite a few were cut up - over 80
According to the Wikipedia entry for Woodhams yard, 297 went in, 213 came out.
@@jameshardy4354297 entered the yard. 213 escaped.
My unly dream is being a steam engine driver 😅
