Thanks for sharing! I've used the same recipe to make prosthetic pieces for Halloween makeup, lifecasting, etc. Much cheaper than alginate or silicone and totally reusable.
Hi , you have used this recipe for lifecasting? I am thinking of doing the same but i have a few conserns about the temperature and "stickiness" of the material , did you have to make a two part mold or was it possible to just wiggle the body part out? What material did you use to fill the molds after? I was thinking about plaster of paris but i have read it doesnt work very well... And aproximatly how much time did it take for the mold to cure? Thank you!
@@AS0144 You have to be careful about the temperature so you don’t burn your subject, of course. I let the mixture cool enough to not burn the skin and then quickly apply it. You will probably need to work a small area at a time since it cools and solidifies rapidly. I then backed the mold with plaster cloth and allowed it to harden to help support the mold. It was a simple one piece mold that the subject was able to wiggle out of. More complex shapes may require a 2 part mold. I used plaster to fill the mold. I used silicone oil as a barrier in the mold to keep the plaster from sticking to it. I would also recommend using silicone oil or petroleum jelly (very light coat) on your subject to make the mold easier to remove from your subject. Either way, it will take some trial and error to figure out what will work best for you when using this material. Be safe!
I heated the water to 120 degrees F before adding the gelatin. The gelatin completely dissolved after a few minutes of stirring after which the glycerin was added. I poured the mixture into the form just as soon as the glycerin dissolved.
Great Idea just made a small batch but the stirring while on gentle heat created a lot of bubbles which stayed once cured, is there a way to get rid of these before pouring over object
They can be removed with a spoon or other implement. Also, try a small amount of IsoPropyl alcohol. If you read the comments there are several good ideas. I have cast many items and the bubbles have not caused a problem. Thanks, Ken.
good one. i cannot find video 2, however i saw it on your site you mentioned, but there is no subtitle. can you please send me a link of youtube video 2 with subtitle.
Yes, with some conditions. First, all resins are exothermic (give off heat) and they are somewhat different. In most cases the best way is to chill the mold and I would recommend trying a small sample with the resin that you use. Ken.
i think you mentioned it before, may I ask again, is it food safe that is can i cast food into it?? and also would resin be too hot for this mold?? many thanks
Yes, but they both contain water and that can alter the mold so it is a tricky process. Refrigerate the mold and hope that the POP won't be too warm for the mold. I had pretty poor results, Ken.
This material will lose water over time so sealing in a plastic bag and refrigerating will help. I have had some for at least two years. The only similarity with silicone is in flexibility. But, it will never equal real silicone. Ken.
I'm currently overseas and its proving difficult to find pure glycerine. I have been however reading about plausible glycerine substitutes i.e. light corn syrup, vegetable oils ect. I know those can be used for fondant and royal icing. I'm just curious if any of the mentioned substitutes would be suitable for your recipe? Great video and much appreciated.
Any plasticizer has to be water soluble so that leaves out the oils but light corn syrup may work. Try a small batch and test but it would be guesswork on my part to say that it will perform like glycerine, Ken.
Agar is not a good choice and if you go to my open source website, observations.com, "In the write up"you will see a candle that I made using a cold mold and somewhat cool wax. Thanks for the question. Ken.

For how long the gelatin gotta go into the fridge? I tried this formula but it was hard to get the figure out of the cup also the gelatin break as soon it was out... Please help
