- After war was declared upon Earth by the Gern Empire, a reject group of humans try to survive on planet Ragnarok by hunting dangerous unicorns, keeping safe from agressive dog-humans, and gravity is merciless, food is scarce.
Plot:
A ship heading from Earth to Athena, a planet 500 light years away, is suddenly attacked by the Gerns, an alien empire in its expansion phase. People aboard are divided by the invaders into Acceptables and Rejects. The Acceptables would become slave labor for the Gerns on Athena, and the Rejects are forced ashore on the nearest 'Earth-like' planet, called Ragnarok. The Gerns say they will return for the Rejects, but the Rejects quickly realise that that isn't going to happen.
Ragnarok has a gravity 1.5 times that of Earth, and is populated by deadly, aggressive creatures and it contains little in the way of usable metal ores. This, combined with a terrible deadly fever that kills in hours, more than decimates the population.
The novels follows the stranded humans through several generations as they try to survive there, and their unswerving goal to repay the Gerns for their cruelty.
Comic book writer Warren Ellis counts the novel as one of his early favorites, writing, "I must have read that book twenty times. It just rips along (in many senses of the word “rips”), as shamelessly gleeful as a short genre book should be."

Brilliant story and well narrated. No adverts either!
That was an unexpected gem I'm delighted to have discovered.. many thanks for the upload.
I've heard this narrator before! Love his narration
Mark Nelson or Gregg Margeritt (don't know how he spell's it). There's tons of audiobooks by them in Librivox. 👍
I read this story as a boy and I enjoyed it all over again! Often times when you grow up, the things you enjoyed then aren't as good as you recalled as a kid, but not this story.
I'm definitely falling asleep to this tonight!
Then you probably missed the subliminal messaging
I did, now I’m going hear the ending.

This is not a compliment.

Great narrator! Strong storyline! Thanks for this!
i actually quite liked this, though i found it funny when the telepathic birds got adapted, the story went from "and the children died of humger, their mothers weeping at the inevibility of it all" to telepathic birds jiggling up and down and being all cutesy
"Bedtime story for falling asleep fast" isn't exactly a compliment to the author
You're correct.

Loved the story....:))))
Great story, great narration.
I'm sooo frustrated that they didn't use the aluminium ore or like some solar oven from the crystals right away. They did it wrong. But other than that it's awesome!
:c
Thanks

I feel like there was on thing they kind of forgot about. cannibalism. I would be kind of pissed if I died trying to keep everyone around me alive. Then they just put all my fresh tasty meat in the ground for the worms of the hell-scape to enjoy.
Is there a book 2?

Really? Text to speech software for an audio book? Come on... 🤮
It's not text to speech, it's a human called Mark Nelson.
