Hello everyone. I actually was currently working on this yacht. We are all very sad to see it go!! I love that all these people in the comments always have so much to say with so little facts...people are just bored and want to comment on anything I guess. The yacht was fitted with the Ultra Fog fire system. The winds were extreme that evening and made the fire impossible to fight. Crew were extinguishing the fire but it was too big too fast. Everything was up to code. All was checked and surveyed in the rercent months as the yacht was changing to commercial so many things had been newly upgraded. This was just a freak fire in terrible winds at night time and left the crew no choice but to abandon their vessel and save their lives. Navis One you will be missed by many!!!! I for one will remember all the good times and hard work spent on making you special.
Hope everyone got off unhurt. Lives are more important . It is a bit shocking that when a yacht does catch fire how little time you have before you have before you have no choice to abandon ship . Especially the fibreglass yachts.
Thank you for the update beautiful vessel glad everyone is okay
We would love to talk to you if you were onboard. news@esysman.co.uk
Well put and big middle finger to all the keyboard firemen out there
As the first officer that was there in August, you are very wrong. That vessel was NOT upto commercial standard in anyway shape or form, both myself and another captain walked off this boat due to safety concerns
Greece fires are hard to put out.
🤣
As a marine tech I'm not surprised.. most likely an electrical fire due to lithium batteries. These are by far the worst batteries to have onboard within bigger systems.
Once discharged and not used normally, they exhibit odd behaviors, and once fully charged and used under a normal condition again, they fault out or overheat.
My recommendation is sticking with gel or AGM battery banks if within warmer climates.
I've seen these fail time after time and that's where I make a majority of easy cash, especially on insurance gigs.
I have experience fixing damage after fires onboard and it's 99% of the time electrical issues at fault.
Any vessel that's been sitting for more than 3 months should never be purchased!! Generally around the 5-6 month period is when a refit will be quoted on, and then be sold to a new owner shortly after.
I'm ABYC qualified and travel all over to perform service, and if I came across this one I guarantee the government wouldn't hire me on as it would cost them big money to bring up to code.
So now I'm curious who surveyed this vessel and why?
Also I have a 100 ton endorsement if that counts for anything.
Also spent 7 years offshore as a commercial fisherman/ relief captain.
Also if Lithium batteries become wet can become unstable with same result
A 100 year old wooden vessel is far more fire resistant than one built yesterday.
If a baby swallows a small lithium battery, it can die.
With insurance gigs you mean claim expertise?
I don’t understand why so many of the new eco yachts are using lithium cells.
It'll buff right out.
It amazes me how the M/Y crews are never able to contain a fire before it becomes unmanageable.
Insurance fraud...
especially when you think most insurance company's require engine room fire suppression systems 👍👍
Could have been started in the cabins - a laptop battery fire can be unmanageable fairly quickly as it is not an expected event. My bet would be insurance though.
Anything that takes one of those lithium carbonate batteries is a very dangerous thing. Some companies won’t send them out.
@@ianmontgomery7534. This channel has downplayed the idea of insurance fraud on M/Y. Previously owned boats are often hold their value due to the long lead time it takes to build a new one.
Worked as crew! Not surprised it burnt down!
It is a shame with all the big bucks, engineering and technology they can't come up with a good fire suppression system.
If the fire was started by a lithium battery overheating they are impossible to extinguish. Many ev vehicles suffer the same fate
Actually, the experts have come up with a very good fire suppression system. The idea is to let the vessel burn full tilt until anything flammable is consumed. Fire is suppressed when there is nothing left to burn. Insurance companies hate this one simple trick.😊
@@oneperson7013 No Halon anymore these days. Even that wouldn't work on lithium fires.
@@oneperson7013no they don’t. They do understand it.
Interesting that no one commented on the fact the boat actually sunk next to Ano Koufonisi and not next to Mykonos which is 40nm NW from the last location. The AIS screen shots are pretty clear it is not Mykonos.
I just commented on that Mykonos nowhere on charts
👍

GMail in the house!
Schooner in Maine snaps mast, kills 1 injures others. 33 total on board, Coast Gard rescues injured. Per NECN.
@esysman why don't the motor yachts have portions of the hull made of glass ? Viewing nature is better than a tele. It is a great idea!
Is it just more reporting on it or are more yachts catching fire compared to previous seasons?
That and smaller plane accidents. Difference with plane accidents is there are more often casualties than with these yachts. But it seems like good portion of smaller airplanes, especially vintage ones have had some accident that resulted in casualties last couple years. I´m yet to see statistics that would show there are more than usually though.
These are more than a coincidence. Between the downturn of the economy, global conflict and interest rates. Super yachts will continue to suffer casualties.
Seems to be a lot of Yachts burning lately. Is this a new trend, or have they always burned up and just not been newsworthy in the past?
High fog is a good fire preventing system - but my guess is that golden WC is more important on a M/Y
Apparently they had a high fog system, it is not infallible.
The Greek coast guard vessel looked like a Damen support yacht. I know Damen make coast guard and military vessels, in addition to yachts and commercial ships, so I guess they made it?
Lets hope everyone is ok from that yacht fire.
is there anything like a sea water sprinkler system? or is that just a risk of flooding..
No, it's halon extinguishers and are most focused with engine and equipment areas. They don't use water of any kind as it'll steam and kill all onboard like a lobster.
Such a common occurrence
the fire was in Koufonisia islands not in Mykonos!
must be a battery fire.
Fire doubles in size every minute
Am I the only one that did not notice Mykonos on any of those charts
Are these fires on what seems for so many super yatchs for real or is it about insurance $.
Where is the nearest coast guard station? If it is 3 hours awat by boat, then their arrival 3 hours after call was made is normal and not indicative of the folks being on lunch break and waiting for it to be over before responding to an emergency. But if the coast guard station is next door then the 3 hours matters.
Why so many yachts catches fire ?
Is the lack of impossible to hide fires aboard larger super-yachts a statistical fluke (due their smaller numbers), or a result of dedicating some of their volume and tonnage to design feature which prevent fires, and/or superior fire suppression systems?
Halon got banned 25 years ago. But I doubt that would stop a lithium battery induced fire. I don't dislike lithium batteries but I always wonder if I will come home to find my house destroyed by my electric toothbrush.
@philhawley1219 A yacht could put its batteries in a vented waterproof room and flood them with salt water in case of fire - rather like the magazines of an old battleship. It should be an easier problem for a ship (with an effectively infinite water supply close at hand) than for a car.
Don't reply to someone complaining about lithium batteries by suggesting they could be flooded in the case of fire. 😄@@Dennis-vh8tz
@@Dennis-vh8tz Why not use the conventional lead acid batteries? The only time I ever had problems with those was during a severe flooding and the seawater got to them. Chlorine gas doesn't half make you cough a bit. Today we have sealed acid glass matrix batteries that are impervious to the ingress of seawater. Leave lithium to fools like Bazos who thinks he can save the world.
@@Dennis-vh8tz Why would this make a difference? Once the fire is going, it creates its own oxygen supply chemically. You would need to put it in a fire-proof compartment that can withstand the high temperatures of a battery fire and let it burn out to save the boat.
There were to many problems like fires, sudden sincking of Turkish produced yachts.
A "green energy" scam??!! I'm SHOCKED, SHOCKED I tell you!
Yachts sink and have fires alot! Odd!!
I would say that given the location of the start of the fire that the most likely cause will be a lithium power toy. I am amazed that the owners of these boats allow scooters, bikes and underwater electric propulsion toys.
Possibly but also the engine room is in that area.
I agree but it is a lot harder to deal with Lithium than an engine fire and they are more likely to burst into flames, but it is only a guess.@@eSysmanSuperYachts
How many fires are of suspicious origin after they are investigated ? Insurance fraud ? Arson ?
I would never a yacht previously owned by russian
Super carbon footprint yacht.
dude you are setting tghis fires on superyachts just for content, no insurabce fraud implied ;)🧸
Sweet..
How good are the Turkish built yachts? Are they comparable to the European yacht builders?
I'm told by yacht brokers that at least some of the rash of yacht fires have been caused by small lithium battery powered devices brought onto the vessel. The devices probably melted or exploded while being charged, causing a chain reaction.
I've been watching this channel for a long time, and most yachts that has issues i.e sinking or catching fire seem to be built in Turkey . Odd cocincedent I guess.
Ah the alleged insurance job alive and well in 2023!
Is it possible that these yacht fires are being caused by lithium batteries like all the EV fires now happening with electric vehicles?
Is it just me.But aren't a lot of Yacht's being destroyed by Fire.??
Best way to convert a boat to cash; unless insurance investigators intervene.
Fire Suppression systems or warning systems oddly.... never seem to work and Cost Millions of pounds, Yet my car will tell me sometimes wrong in seconds.
If your car tells you it's on fire, that doesn't mean you will be able to prevent it from burning to the ground.
3 Hours for the Greek coast guard to react to the call to extinguish the fire? What are you complaining about?
Jewish Lightening!
insurance fire
When seconds matter, the government is hours away.
Yes. All Governments should ensure that boats with fire fighting equipment are always available at every obscure island.
Yes here we are again..corupt persons ..
with lithium batteries onboard every harbor is under threat. Would you want to park your 10 million pound yacht next to a boat filled with lithium batteries
Insurance job
Hummm and people are going to try and tell me this is NOT Deliberate too many of these things going up in smoke make no mistake about it these fires are intentional .
Why do people think that all fires are deliberate?
sure, it just "caught fire"
As a former firefighter and paramedic, when I saw the title stating "...Fire in Greece," I knew it would not be good. It always amazed me how careless people are with fire. Worse yet, a Greece Fire is, as you said, are difficult to impossible to extinguish. It's a procedure in my home that we check the fire extinguisher any time we are frying something or using Greece in any other way. Here in the southern US where I live, we cook almost exclusively with lard. Maybe the Greece fire was caused by lard. I can tell you from experience, Greece fires using lard require special equipment and chemicals. When I was a kid, my mama broke off the top of a small pine tree and beat it out. By then though, the possum she was cooking wasn't fit to eat.
By the way, where was the Greece fire? Sounds like something a Russian would do!
But John Travolta would know what to do 😢
I hope you're taking the piss. The subject fire occurred in the territorial waters of Greece (the country) off the busy tourist island of Mykonos and was not a Grease (galley/kitchen) fire.
@@dirtyeric I’m sure Mike’s comment was tongue-in-cheek!
Ohhhhh, the fire was near Greece, the country? I thought it was docked off the northern coast of Austria? Me and the misses is trying to save the money to go down there to Austria, but it's gonna be a while yet before we've crushed and sold enough aluminum cans. We moved here to Peckerwood Hills Mobile Home Village because more of the residents is alcoholics than at any other country club in Georgia (the US state that is). We learnt after we signed the lease here most fellers and felletes don't drink their Bud in a pop-top can. They all drank longnecks.
While I'm at it, maybe some of y'all nautical-minded fellers will know. Me an the misses don't travel a whole lot, so what sort of passport will we need to take for a cruise from Cumming, Georgia to New Mexico? Somebody said we'd have to take a IQ test, but we done had all our shots.
@@alexmarshall4331 I gotcha! If I had a bad lard fire in my trailer, I'd be doing like ole John Travolta, "Stay-in alive, stay-in alive" myself with Bee-Gees in my bonnet, cuttin' some moves like my shoes was on fire an my ass were catching.
Should you really be called a "businessman" when your "business" is committing crime and stealing?
retribution !!!
Hi how com this boats burns so often? How can this boats be of so bad quality i wonder.
It seems like you are reporting this kind of thing multiple times a week. Starting to sound a lot like insurance fraud.
Why even buy such things when this stuff happens. Life is a bad joke
