  • No welding, no special tools, just simplicity!
    3inch pipe test plug: amzn.to/2UNIdih
    Best premade shaker I've seen online: amzn.to/3lSqSkd
    What you need:
    1- 10-11" length of ABS 3inch pipe
    1- 3inch pipe test plug
    1- 3/8-16 nut
    1- 3/8" fender washer
    TOOLS you need:
    any saw(hand powered or electric) that will cut wood will cut ABS pipe
    a wrench
    tons of spray paint
    Thoughts:
    1500rpm seams to be about what you should start out with. The rag makes it much smoother at higher rpms. Running 60 seconds for full cans seams to be more than enough. Less than full cans have more room inside for the paint to move around so they mix faster at 30-45seconds. Pulse it on and off a few times and it's ready to spray. Fits all sizes of cans from Rustoleum, Valspar, Krylon and everything in-between.

    I used a old long sawsall blade that I hose clamped to the can. Then I used the sawsall to shake the can which is a lot like a paint shaker. My build was essentially free as everything I used was old and wore out.

    A 2ft chunk of that 3" pipe is almost $20.00 w/tax at HD now. Along with $6.00 for the test plug and it's almost $30.00. I went the cheap route and made one out of a tin can a 2" bolt and some hardware. basically it's free and it works great. I use a wood shim to hold the spray can in place too.

    I made one too but I attached the piece of pipe to a reciprocating saw blade. Split the pipe down the middle and used a steel hose clamp to hold the spray can in place.
    As the blade goes back and forth it really shakes the can, not just spins it.

    Love the simplicity. Another important reason for hand shaking the can is impart warmth from your hands into the aerosol and paint or other content. This helps to break up "clumping" of the solids that always sink to the bottom of the can especially after sitting for long periods.

      I usually get a pot of water and heat it till boiling point and let it cool for about a minute. Then I throw in all my spray paint cans that im going to use and let it warm up in the water before shaking em up for use.
      I keep em in the water and keep the water warm until im finished. Every liquid sprays a lot smoother and better with stronger spray pressure due to the inside pressure of the can being higher from heat. You should try it.

    GREAT idea and I am going to make one. Leaving the rag out induces some eccentric oscillation. With the rag tending to center the can, the contents to include the ball bearing, rotate at about the same speed as the can and the real mixing takes place when the can stops. This is why we hear the ball bearing spinning when the can stops. Some start and stopping while holding the mixer at a 45º may help.

      I made mine from an alpo dog food can but the force of my drill actually bent the bottom. So then I reinforced it with a chunk of 1/4" steel. I had one in my scrap bin from where I used a metal hole saw, 2.5" I think. Worked perfect and no more worries that it'll bend again and potentially fly out and hit me.

    • @Wishbringer7
      @Wishbringer7 10 місяців тому +1

      @@89Mirageman That will surely work. If one doesn't have 1/4" steel laying around, just use the top or bottom from another can. It will double the strength of the bottom. Washers also help as re-enforcement. The can doesn't have to spin very quickly to shake the paint, so if one has a variable speed drill it works best. What I finally settled on (and it works wonders) was a cheap reciprocating saw (cheapest one can find works great), and I strap the can onto a long blade. That shakes the paint better than anything else I've found.

    Of course, I just emptied and tossed over a dozen cans of paint that I couldn't get to spray at all. I wonder how effective this would be on an already clogged can? Guess I'll have to try that myself. Thanks for the great tip!

    Most of the time people in these types of videos produce a product that is just a waste of time and would normally not get used but you sir are a genius. I love to spray paint but sometimes won't just because shaking the can hurts my wrist. I will be building one of these and putting it in my paint cabinet this weekend

    if you don't have a nut.. you can use a hack saw to cut off the wings on the wingnut and just just some vice grips to tighten. 👍

    Any can with the curved bottom and ball was designed to be spun and not shaken. Shaking it creates to many air pockets and cause uneven flow. This is a great idea!

    made my own pipe with my 3d printer. PCV is stupid expensive at the moment... works like a charm. I also replaced the bolt with a longer one so I could use the wingnut. I think it might be a bit too long but it works.

    Nice video. I tried to make one similar to yours but it didn't work very well I think the problem I had was the diameter of the tube was too close to the diameter of the paint can so there was no wobbling. The wobbling is necessary to get the ball the bearing to spin and shake the can. So what I did instead is I hooked up the plastic bottle from peanuts an empty peanut plastic bottle hooked it up to an old blade from my reciprocating saw and that worked fine if I remember I drill a couple holes in the old blade and then I use rivets riveted it to the plastic can which the can from the peanuts it was just the right size for my paint cans and it also was a thicker plastic so it took the rivets better.

    • @arthurdolle5257
      @arthurdolle5257 Рік тому

      I did something like that with an old reciprocating saw and hose clamps to clamp the paint can to the blade and screwed all down on a board, then one time let it run too long and it wore a hole in the spray can. Big mess

    i do autobody..we have paint can shakers. They shake, not spin.
    The cans need up and down motion to allow the steel ball inside to agitate the paint.
    Centrifugal force will only let the steel ball spin along with the paint. Spinning IS NOT Shaking

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  3 роки тому

      The ball is agitating the crap out of everything inside. The same as sticking a stir stick in a paint can and moving it around.

    • @fatdabacty6948
      @fatdabacty6948 3 роки тому +1

      @@sixtyfiveford spinning the can is different then stirriing with a paint stirrer. The stirrer spins while u move it around in the can , you dont just keep the stirrer in the middle of the can its the same concept as beating an egg..if u stir the egg, it will not mix but if your beat it with an up and down motion added to the stir, thats a different story.

    I am going to make one today. I have 3" thin walled pipe, it should be strong enough, and the plug is $4.41 at my HD. The reciprocating saw idea is good but my saw is heavier and corded and less convenient to grab than my drill.

    • @sixtyfiveford

      I hooked up a contraption to my recip saw years ago and it took just as long to install/remove the paint can as it would have to just shake it by hand.

    I built 3 of these. 1 for me, and 2 for Christmas gifts. I substituted thin wall PVC pipe to cut down on the weight, Sch 40 was way heavier and with the thin wall (also cheaper at my ACE Hdwr) you don't need to be as careful with holding the tube while mixing.
