Quite understandable, because Greenland is a Bernie Sanders role model, with all 31 seats in the Greenlandic Parliament is either from parties to the left of the views of Bernie Sanders or would agree with him, and 60% of the cost of the Greenlandic economy, including their highly expensive infrastructure, free health care, free day care, paid sick leave, 52 weeks of fully paid parental leave, free University college and the right to live and work anywhere in the EU is a subsidy by the Danish Government, with no strings attached, so free money for nothing.
      obviously the Trump MAGA's would have to agree to top this by using your taxpayer $$ on subsidizing a Socialist utopia in Greenland, that then would become a role model for much of the USA. But I wonder how Trump is going to defend that proposal without the MAGA movement imploding on itself?

      @@brandoninhofer6592 .. Greenland was discovered by the Vikings, just as America was discovered by the Vikings, and when the Vikings discovered and settled Greenland it was not inhabited. The Inuit's came after the Vikings and not before. The humans who may have lived in Greenland in ancient times before the Vikings, were long gone by the time the Vikings arrived, and when the Vikings left the Inuit's took over, until the Danes later returned to rule.
      So it's all very complicated, much like with Israel and the Palestinians, though in this case it has all been settled very peacefully ages ago, and Trump is not going to be able to change this by steering up a conflict that do not exist.

      It can be fixed. Ship energy exports to other countries instead. Increase military spending, but not on American equipment. Manufacture domestically, and buy from Europe. Canada already has a history of using German tanks. 100% tariff on Tesla, and allow BYD to sell in Canada provided they manufacture in country - like they are doing in Mexico. We can come up with more solutions. The point that Trump is making is that you should not allow America to have leverage over you. Point taken. Canada should move away from America, and strengthen ties with other countries.

    Greenland should setup a sovereign wealth fund, much like the Alaska Permanent Fund. Which would collect a royalty from natural resource development that goes into a fund. The dividends from that fund pay for infrastructure and cash payments to residents.

    There's only a few communities in Greenland. Their population is only a little over 50 THOUSAND. About half of the population lives in one city, Nuuk, the capital.

The Canada thing started as a joke, but what it has done (especially given Canda's weak financial position) is started a serious dialog that it shouldn't be so darn difficult for people and businesses to work across the border. It should be a very easy process for an American and Canadian to get a work visa in each country.

      Just to throw out the unlikely possibility.
      As for Candians being more liberal than Americans. I'm not sure how that would play out electorally once you move from a Parlimentary system to the US electoral district system at the House level.
      If I go by the rule that any new state must exceed the current least populous state, then you end up with 9 potential states (I assume that Prince Edward Island would need to merge with one of the other Atlantic Provinces). I could see a secenario where there are three solid Blue, three likely Red and some toss ups. Quebec may just be a wild card that choses to be a king maker.

      As an Ohioan that vacationed many years in Canada but now can’t go without a passport for my whole family I would love to see it at least go back to that status. It makes no sense for us to have separate currencies either.

    Because Denmark simply says no to any purchase.

    And by the way what kind of Infrastructure investment does America promise to Greenland? I mean currently, Alaska the closest comparison, does not do so well in terms of Infrastructure.

      Alaska is the most developed and populated Arctic territory in the world. The Arctic has a population of 4 million and Alaska alone has a population of 700,000. Greenland would massively benefit in the same way that Alaska did after we purchased it from Russia

Because in this case you expect the native Greenland population to voluntarily vote to get replaced with immigrants and become a minority in their own country. (At least I doubt that the Greenlander will start having more children because they are now part of the US).
      Lastly no. Alaska is not the most populated and developed Arctic territory. The 4 Million reffers to the population within the arctic circle. Alaska has only 3 Boroughs in said Region. North Slope, Northwest Arctic and Yokon-Koyukuk with a combined population of ~25.000.

    I’m surprised that not many people talked openly about the geopolitical aspects of this, especially in regards to negotiating with Russia to end the Ukraine war. The northern coast of Russia allows Russia access to the Atlantic Ocean. I’m wondering if the United States acquires Greenland, then ships can’t sale without clearance Off the coast, which takes away Russia’s ability to openly navigate through those waters.

    Say Greenland citizens decided to join the US they could move from poverty to success. Say in their new state constitution they baked in a percentage of mineral rights going to the citizens of Greenland as well as a small percentage of the value of the minerals coming from there. Similar what Alaska does with oil rights.

      Incorrect. Louisiana was the breadbasket for Haiti and the loss of it due to their independence movement meant that there was no more reason to hold onto the land. Napoleon was also a brilliant strategist who knew that the territory would rapidly fall to the British, so instead of accepting the inevitable he decided to sell it to the US for extra cash to fund his European campaigns. It was a win-win for the French and Americans.
