My grandparents were married in 1932, the worst year of the Great Depression. My Grandma told me some of the stories about what they went through. For instance, she was boiling potatoes (that's all they had to eat) and my Grandpa was out looking for work. The gas man came and said he had to turn off the gas. She said "Can't I boil my potatoes first?" He said, " I would like to ma'am, but I have to." Imagine how she must have felt when my Grandpa returned with half-boiled potatoes for supper. I really find it hard to watch when they sit down for dinner...

Maybe you don't have to be in the depression to hope for a good potato. I love potatoes.
This is a great great flick..but I do miss the old days and everyone in them..get it.

Heads UP! Take a look at the scene where car comes around corner fast (near beginning) and both cops chase car and they end up at a intersection with cop coming down hill - NOW, look closely at that intersection, that is same intersection where Spencer Tracy drove his car in the 1964 film 'Mad Mad Mad World' 30 years later. Interesting how motion picture companies use the same geographic areas over and over to make films?

The cop's 'bikes' (logo visible at 05:32) are Hendersons with inline four cylinder engines.
Owned by Schwinn since 1918, the Chicago based manufacturer ceased production of motorcycles in 1931 to focus exclusively on bicycles.

@@PizzaFLIX I also had a 'knock off' stingray, an AMF Renegade (made when AMF owned Harley Davidson, actually) that I used for my paper route (Van Nuys News and Valley Green Sheet) until I bought a red Schwinn Sting Ray with the big five speed stickshift from my buddy Joel Ewanick (later a top GM exec.) when he upgraded to a 'Krate' model.

Fascinating footage of 1932 Los Angeles. When the cops hassle the Italian produce truck driver and pull him over they're in Hollwoodland. Amazing to see the shot down Santa Monica Boulevard when there was still a lot of vacant land on it. Los Angeles in 1932 was truly amazing and beautiful! I wish I knew where the neighborhood shots were and if the houses still remain.

1:31 This shot taken on Beachwood Drive near the entrance to what what then was called "Hollywoodland" There is a vacant lot behind the cameras there on the corner, not in the movie, opposite the turn on the road that features the famous gates on Beachwood drive which are just around the corner Our two policemen 4:34 are going right towards them... And still are there today..... Going north (the other way) through them you dead ended at the tract office for sales of lots for Hollywoodland. Taking a left and around the corner to the right at the bend was the place this scene was taken. only a few hundred feet.

Al, this is Hollywood, not real life. In real life in the 1930s crime had reached a level not seen for half a century. It was matched again only in the 1980s. Crime is lower today than at either of these periods. That's just ordinary crime. If you want a more dramatic view of our former great society, check out the statistics on lynchings. Movies put a happy face on everything, and nostalgia takes over from there.

This is much like the Los Angeles of my youth. Once the Latino gangs were forceably well, "surpressed" by servicemen in WW2, Los Angeles entered a golden age. The streets were clean, everyone had a job, Churches were full on Sundays. Pressed clean clothing was the rule, kids were able to enjoy their childhood on safe streets and schools. People were polite everyone used 'please', 'thank you' and "excuse me" People were patriotic they identified as Americans. We had many relatives in L.A. and there was no such thing as fear or drugs in any noticeable way.. L.A. always had a smooth soft feeling to that Beautiful

The state of California now comprises more Mexicans than whites.Hundreds of thousands of those here ILLEGALLY,living off the American hard working taxpayer. How many of those ILLEGALS pay taxes? How many of those ILLEGALS become American citizens by the book? Not many, because they don't have to.In America, they now have a pot to piss in,and I gave it to them.I am not against Immigrants of any race,as long as they respect the laws and regulations of this country.

Rather simplified plot with an exaggerated amount of gut wrenching emotional sequences, kind of boring? The cop that was killed looked like he took the corner too wide and went off road, not like the car hit his motorcycle so you had to pretend somehow this guy had killed the cop by knocking him off road - but it didn't look like that in film? I think they convicted an innocent man!
