  • "The Yellow Album" is now available on iTunes! The first full-length album produced and performed entirely on the Korg Kaossilator handheld synthesizer. No other effects, EQ or sounds were added. All 17 tracks were digitally recorded direct from the Kaossilator's line outputs. The only external editing was simple volume balancing. Free download at

    This is still inspiring people ~12 years later. I just ordered an old-school yellow Kaossilator tonight and this has provided me with a ton of inspiration!

    Thanks for the note. It's comments like yours that convinced the people at Korg that my "Yellow Album" had swayed a number of people into buying Kaossilators. Korg ended up being very gracious in rewarding me some other products gratis for my contribution. I thought that was nice considering they didn't have any real obligation. But the guys over at Korg seemed like very cool people; just as cool as their products. Thanks again for your kind feedback and have fun with the new toy. -G

    I just got back from a friend's place where we hooked up my Kaossilator to a really high powered p.a.system with fully linear speakers and a custom built subwoofer. You wouldn't believe the sound that thing is really capable of, epecially when it comes to the bass pads.

    Wow...just plain unbelievable. I'm ecstatic to discover all the insane possibilities of this thing after mine got delivered this afternoon...what a blast so far and I've clearly not even glanced the surface yet!
    Great tune!

    the answer is a qualified yes. While there are a set amount of drum patterns, the combination of using the arpeggiator coupled with the variations created by the touchpad give the illusion of nearly infinite choice. Alternatively there are patches containing single drum sounds, and in theory one could build up beats by layering drums individually in the loop(not the easiest thing obviously). Remember though that all this hard work ends up being disposable as there are no save functions.

    Great gadget and synth , great music and skill man. Now I have motivation to get my hands on one. You are a great music composer.

  • @garykibler
    @garykibler  15 років тому +1

    Only a single two-bar loop is allowed (technically 4-bar loop if you're willing to lose the "undo" function). But within that loop you are allowed infinite layers of recording tracks as it digitally records each layer on top of the previous recording. On my album there are some songs made up of nearly 30 or more layers. And, yes, your choice of outputs are stereo mini-jack (volume-controlled) and/or stereo phono jack (set volume).

    I live in the UK. Korg has been selling these for awhile in Japan and other areas outside the US. They were supposed to become available in the states as of last Jan, but it appears most online US music retailers can't keep these in stock. For a street price of $200 - cheaper than an ipod and more fun.

    This is the best use of the Kaossilator I've ever seen. I wasn't keen on the idea of using only the Kaossilator, but damn if you didn't make it work. I mean, this is music I can listen to on a regular basis... not just something I check out once because it sounds interesting.
    I'm going to check out your website.

    Sorry, for the delay in responding. Most people seem to listen mostly to this opening track, but my personal fav is still track4 "Chill Loopa" because of the extended solo in it. It's my understanding that the Kaoss pads are more focused on effects processing, with perhaps some limited sampling capabilities. Unlike those, the Kaosillator does not have any audio input or effects capabilities short of the effects preset in its sounds. It is a sound source in itself, namely a handheld synth with a number of preset sounds and a loop recorder included. The recorder is limited to a small # of bars of internal sounds only. More detailed info is available on the Korg site.

    Some Kaossilator tips: Holding Scale and pressing Loop takes you immediately to the Program menu from anywhere else.
    Also, in program d.84, hit the top edge of the touch pad anywhere, and wait. It produces a rising feedback. Stop it by pressing anywhere else or changing program.

  • @Dracopol
    @Dracopol 14 років тому

    @mrpeanut25 Not so much, because he was using a scale called Minor Pentatonic. In the key of C, there are only the notes C, D#, F, G, and A# in it, from the center to the edge. Mostly he was sliding from one note to the next. But you still have to develop a violinist's skill with that and with the even more note-filled scales to hit the right notes without marks.

  • @something-anything
    @something-anything 15 років тому

    it makes all its sounds (the sounds you hear here on the video) independently with no external help. It has no speakers though, so you must wear headphones or plug directly into a stereo or amp with the RCA style plugs on the top of the unit. That's why you see it so wired up here, both to the headphones (that I'm wearing) and also the RCA audio plugs on top going to my video/audio recording device.

  • @Dracopol
    @Dracopol 14 років тому

    @v8bert Gee, doesn't anybody read any more? Lol. In the instructions section on Loop (Phrase) recording, it says, "within the range 300-75 bpm, the beat count (1-8) represents quarter notes; within the range 74.9-37.5 bpm, 1-8 represents eighth-notes; within the range 37.4-20 bpm, 1-8 represents sixteenth notes." So your optimum is at or above 75 bpm if you can make your own rhythms from scratch and try to double-time things.

  • @Dracopol
    @Dracopol 14 років тому

    @litlekarim33 No! The Mini-Kaoss Pad processes sound inputs and does reverbs and delays and stuff. The Kaossilator actively produces musical sounds like a musical instrument. One must likewise not confuse the Kaossilator Pro (green lights) with the Kaoss Pad 3 that has the same casing (but red lights).

    Patch is no. 2 "unison lead" with the gate arp on, set to default pattern G.00, the tempo is at or around 100bpm. Scale used is MIP, minor Pentatonic, #13 on their chart,though I don't see any correlation to numbers on the arp display. NOTE: The scale name MIP looks more like "niP" on the display.

    @v8bert The instructions say that, if you dial down to a low beats per minute, the Kaossilator will automatically cut to Loop Length 4 and then Loop Length 2. It is just not possible to store a very long sound loop.

  • @Dracopol
    @Dracopol 13 років тому

    @cjwaters9 There ARE no controls for the volume levels. Korg did a good job programming really good synth sounds and filter variation, and pre-adjusting the levels to compare well with each other. #35 is a bit overpowering though, and although it claims you can record infinite numbers of overdubs, of course you'll get a white-noise muddle after a while.
