DIY Sliding Deck / Dog Gate

  • My brother wanted a low sliding / rolling gate to stop the pet puppies getting up the side passage, but this design would work great on a deck or veranda too. Merbau decking is a great outdoor material and tough enough to withstand animal attention which lent itself well to this application. I used Kreg pocket hole joinery which allowed me to hide most of the hardware and using a guide box and rollers allowed for the gate to open all the way.
    Trying something new and giving you a break from my over-complicated explanations this time, sit back and enjoy this easy, chilled out build you can knock out in a weekend.

      Thanks Dirk. I will learn "real" joinery as I progress, but this is a practical project and only needs a practical solution. The only thing I think I'll need to keep an eye on is the Kreg screws as they are not galvanised and may get a little wet. I'm hoping as they are buried and oiled I think they'll be fine for a number of years. Love the design and love the puppers. I laughed at the 6.06 mark though. That’s why I avoid Phillips head screws. Robertson screws are my choice. 👍🏻

      Hey! This was my first gate build but geez that's a good little idea. It would be tricky on this particular design as the gate is so heavy (and the ground uneven) that the amount of counterweight force needed would be high. I think you'd need a good track on the bottom to run smoother and perhaps use pine or aluminium.

      G'day Paul, no, that was a decking oil I used and would recommend. It soaks into the wood so it wont rub off inside the guide box. I'd avoid using a film finish like polyurethane for this reason.

    Hi there, thank you for uploading such an informative video. I have a question I am trying to get a gate built using decking board wood and they guy came back and said he cannot do it, it is too heavy - what do you think of that and is there a way putting wheels for sliding. Please help!

    • @FixitFingers
      @FixitFingers  2 роки тому

      G'day Shaun, sliding gates are not as common as hinged gates, and yep, hardwood decking is quite heavy over this span, but a wheeled design like mine here should overcome that. It's worked well, only issue is stones and sticks on the wheels path can foul it. You could add a track, or just keep it clean ;) The gate is a bit heavy to slide compared to hinged gate, but doesn't take that much effort.

      That gate is about 1.1m (3.5 feet) wide. That design could probably be adapted to go wider, you're just going to need an extra vertical brace at the back and an extra wheel . It's pretty heavy though in hardwood, a 2m / 6ft gate would be getting close to the limit I think.

      Merbau comes from SE Asia and we grow a bit here in Australia too. It is common and cheap here but probably rare in the States and more expensive. It's not that great a material (hard and brittle) but makes great decking. Any decking boards you can get your hands on should be fine for this design.
