  • JHS little black amp box reviewed, it tames the twitchy volume on the Fender Hotrod deluxe or any combo amp with an effects loop, put this in the effects loop to control the clean tone volume of your fender hotrod or any tube/valve amp that has an effects loop and get some nice pre-amp overdrive.
    As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases but it costs you nothing extra.
    amzn.to/3gijvTn
    It's definitely worth the investment, it's well built and solid and the volume on the JHS little amp box is nice and smooth and has a lot more control. Thanks for watching.

    I realise this video is a hot discussion point but would love to hear your views (please ignore my nervousness, it's a new thing for me :) ), after trying it i was impressed that i could turn the amp up to 12 to get preamp overdrive and control the twitchy volume on the clean channel.

      I use one with my Fender Frontman 100W 212R. The amp is so loud without it that it is unusable in a home environment. The amp goes from off to loud - there is no in-between setting.

      @@DerekPaulGuitar Well I have one on the way to try out..In attempt to tame a 100 watt Marshall. What confuses me is..Why the expensive attenuators on the market then ?..I feel confused and a bit concerned about it...Could this be to good to be true ?...Am I gonna melt it ? Dunno yet. @@DerekPaulGuitar what is the difference between using this vs the power attenuator?

    • @DerekPaulGuitar
      @DerekPaulGuitar  3 роки тому +1

      @@allboutthemojo an attenuator will allow you to use the full power of the amp including the power tubes, this will just allow you to use the preamp tube power, also attenuators these days have cab IRs and will let you use headphones (or at least the captor x does) of course attenuators are much more expensive and if you are just starting out then this will be fine

    • @allboutthemojo
      @allboutthemojo 3 роки тому +1

      @@DerekPaulGuitar thanks for replying. Maybe I'm confused or I think I have it straight now? So if the volume pedal goes in between the preamp and power amp via the effects loop, it is turning down the signal from the preamp ( which is where the primary tone shaping is done? ) going into the power amp. Wouldn't this sacrifice the tone? Whereas with the attenuator going after the power amp and before the speakers or cabinet, it will still allow the amp tubes to fully process the signal as per the character of all the tubes before giving the user full control over the volume from the lowest setting without impacting tone?
      Sorry I'm just trying to understand which one I should get as there are some attenuator available for $100 , still more $ than a jhs vol pedal but not by too much.

    • @DerekPaulGuitar
      @DerekPaulGuitar  3 роки тому +1

      @@allboutthemojo that’s pretty much it yes, if you can you’d be better of with an attenuator as you get both sets of tubes cooking, and you get maximum tone, just make sure you get the right Ohm rating for the amp you have :)

      Because you are not pushing the power tubes. That is were the sweet gain comes from. Preamp gain is harsh and nasty. All you are doing with this is pushing the preamp tubes and cutting the power before it reaches the power tubes.

    I went ahead and bought this JHS little black box. I saw another video where a guy used his EQ pedal in the loop, so I tried my Boss 7 band EQ. In short it worked great, no loss of tone I could tell and no hiss. The only thing is if I take my DSL100H to 6 in the Ultra gain channel, with the EQ all the way down the output of the amp is probably around 2 or slightly less. That makes the amp usable but still a bit loud. I’d like to be able to dime it and have it bedroom level. Pipe dream? Anyway got it anyway, can’t be bad to have a simple in-line master volume control.

It'll be flat so grind .1 of a mm back and recheck untill its exact. Then wrap up that 1.5%. Youll like it if u havent done it already

    I got one of these for my Blackstar Combo - works great as you said for amps like mine where most of the breakup/distortion comes from the pre-amp section and the power amp remains mostly clean. I don't see any downside in this case. It may not work as well in an amp where the cranked up power section provides a significant amount of tonal character that the player wishes to retain - those type amps would require an attenuator between amp and speaker in order to reduce overall volume without losing the tonal quality provided by the power amp section at higher volumes.

      This little guy brings the preamp breakup to bedroom levels, which is why it’s plugged into the FX loop. An attenuator does the same thing, except it brings both (preamp and power amp breakup) down to bedroom levels, which is why it’s connected after your actual amp but before your speaker cab?

    I hope that you bought a better amp. The difference between a Hotrod and a Princeton is huge. But the Tone King Gremlin would be better if you want it for home. 😁👍

      I still have the hot rod, I use a tech 21 q-strip parametric eq and a NUX compressor in front of it and it sounds amazing, the amps you mentioned are out of my price range.

      @@DerekPaulGuitar Hi Derek. I understand. I think the approach you’ve taken is clever. When I used a Blues Jnr, I used the Tech 21 Blonde and a compressor to improve the sound. Changing the speaker is the best way to improve them as Fender uses dreadful speakers. I used a Cannabis Rex, which is great, but the Eminence Legend or Legacy (it’s name is one of those) gives a truer Fender sound. I recently bought a used Cali76 compressor and it is amazing. At first it sounded no different, but after a few days I realised that it’s effect was transparent, but it made my TC Hypergravity, and other compressors, sound awful. For about £140 it transformed my tone. I’m a Brit living in Australia. I only recently learned how expensive music gear is in the UK. It’s very expensive here, but it’s worse in the UK. But I highly recommend getting a better speaker and an Origin Effects Compressor. Fender puts crappy speakers in all of its amps, except for the handwired models. I’ve been watching the Origin Effects Compressors for 10 years and the used prices have finally started coming down. Thanks mate.
      Max 😁👍

    I've got a similar amp and hoping to make use of this JHS pedal. Would you expect that while using it with a HRD IV it adds any noise? I had a unit I ended up returning because no matter what even at 0 the pedal added a good hum, particularly noticeable when you aren't playing.

    • @DerekPaulGuitar
      @DerekPaulGuitar  2 роки тому +1

      Hi, I didn’t experience any noise at all so I wouldn’t expect any, only of course if you use the high gain setting on the amp and max the volume, but that’s to be expected, cheers

    Too much emphasis is made on cranking power tubes for 'that' sound. Sometimes it just sounds flubby, ratty and a bit broken. However.... crank the volume on silver face 70s twin, turn down the master and bass, crank up the treble and mids and.. instant never mind the bollocks! Try just turning everything up and you'll make everyone a bit sad

    When you talk about a Fender "Hot Rod" amp, you should clarify that yours isn't a REAL Hot Rod. My DeVille 212 and numerous visits from the semi-amused local constabulary back me up on this claim.
    I originally bought the DeVille around 2001 thinking it would be more portable, lighter, manageable, lower volume etc. than my JCM800 half stack. I was wrong on all counts. This frigging thing is angry all the time and hates me at a personal level, even though I love it with all of my heart. I can barely get the volume above zero before the neighbours complain - and I live in a house lol
    So I bought a Fender Mustang I modelling amp.
    Great video, Derek. I think you might have sold me on this little box. $57 Canadian.

    • @DerekPaulGuitar

      I hear you!! It is angry and loud! Once you put this in the effects loop you’ll never look back! It’s a great thing I’ve been using it for over a year now and it’s permanently connected, thanks for the kind words, stay well and cheers!

    I guess I'm just now figuring out that I don't understand how an FX loop works, I have a Supersonic 22, I can switch the FX LOOP 'on' and 'off' with the Fender footswitch. Would the JHS Little Black Amp Box be 'engaged' if I have the FX loop set to 'off'?

    • @DerekPaulGuitar
      @DerekPaulGuitar  5 років тому +1

      Hi Evan, I’m not familiar with that amp but I would say that if the little amp box was in the effects loop and you switched the effects loops off the little black amp box would be disengaged, that sounds right to me but maybe worth checking with the manufacturer.

    • @evankeal
      @evankeal 5 років тому +2

      @@DerekPaulGuitar Yeah, I was thinking perhaps the send signal was always active but the return is what is getting switched on or off, I bought one anyways just to hear my amp on something more than 1.8 out of curiosity. I never expected a fender to be wall melting at 4.

      Putting a volume control box in the effects loop rather than attenuating the amp, to be fair it doesn’t matter these days but that video is a couple of years old now
