    Elaine, I love the colour of your sweater. It contrasts nicely with the blue board.

    Great Review. This is my favourite game from 2018. Absolutely love it. I really like that I almost never need to look at the rule book. The cards have both symbols and explanations. Since you discard cards at the start of your turn it gives you something to think about between turns.
    I’ve avoided 4 player and that doesn’t bother me much. The game gives me a similar feeling as Castles of Burgundy another favourite of mine. Another game that’s better with lower player counts.

    Played this three player a couple weeks ago... near perfect review imho: a fun, quite satisfying engine builder, but with a fair risk of AP and the regular euro point salad, but served in three courses with snacks (AHHHH! boardgames are not food!). Only thing I'd highlight is just HOW MUCH engine gets built in those ten little rounds. Cheers folks :).

    • @pauk.w
      @pauk.w 5 років тому

      I'd go even further than that - the engine is all in the last six rounds! The first four rounds are little more than an advanced set up. Things really heat up after the first resource phase.

    So it's finally gone up for sale in the US, got my copy yesterday and they have changed the production from your review! The player boards are very thick.. just as thick as the board. There are only a few x3 tokens, too; lots more singles, which is better

    The card draw is a problem. You can just crap out on your draw. Same is true of Race for the Galaxy, but Race is so much shorter, so it's less bothersome. Race also gives you more tools for addressing the card draw "problem."

      I actually disagree. I've played the game around 20 times now, and I feel like the card management is the real beauty of the game, that forces you to change the path during game. For every game it feels less important what you draw, and more important how you make the most of the cards while still focusing on some kind of overall masterplan. For me it's a really key part of what I like about the game, that the cards really forces me to rethink my plans - and somestimes even ignore the cards, and go for the much needed action, or at other times go for certain actions mostly to get a strong important card played.

    6:05 You can only upgrade the structure you just built though. Which can be frustrating, but helps make turn order super important when everyone wants to do upgrades at the same time.

    Only played with 4 and one of my usual players has AP. Long but enjoyed it. The others did remark on the rulebook being very good. Especially compared to Last Will and pret a porter

    I found it interesting that the game designer's surname is Suchy, and he made a game about cities underwater. "Suchy" translates to "dry".

    Nice review - the one thing that makes a difference between terraforming mars and underwater city is for me: Terraforming Mars is all about long term planning and payoffs for your engines, while Underwater Cities is all about adapting to your current situation (available actions and cards) - in a way like Strategy vs Tactics - thus I really like playing both.

    Great review, you guys are quickly becoming my favorite reviewers. I've been on the fence with this game and I have yet to watch a review that helped me make up my mind one way or another. Until now, that is. It is definitely not for me, it's got too much of the same problems that Terraforming Mars has for me. I know they're different games, but my issues were randomness of the card draws, length of the game at higher player counts, bad components and art, and lack of theme. All of which this game seems to have in spades. Thanks for saving me time and money though, much appreciated :)

      Much better than expected. I don't tend to like darker beers because they often have one dominating flavour and this was just not that. Also, not as briny as you would think.

    I think my biggest problem from the video is the bendy bender boards. I hate how everything from china feels more like a wrap nowadays, less like a board.

    This seems to be new trend in board gaming - god awful graphic design. It's subjective, of course, but I think that Terraforming Mars looks like a prototype print-and-play with it's shonky artwork and while the theme of Underwater Cities appealed to me more (I hated TM to be honest) when I saw the artwork I was really disappointed. The most recent game to suffer from this is Ark Nova. Hard pass on all three for me.

    I love great artwork in games... and this just doesn't have it. With so many options, that have both great art AND game play, this game is a pass for me and not going into my collection.
