    Dear prof,
    I would greatly appreciate it if you would be so kind as to let me know if I get the point of gerund and present participle.
    Please let me say an example:
    🔹Smoking cigarettes IS dangerous
    🔸Smoking cigarettes ARE dangerous
    🔹The first sentence is gerund because smoking is a subject of the sentence. Hence, smoking is dangerous, the topic is smoking.
    🔸The second smoking is an adjective because modify the number of cigarettes so the point is the number of the cigarettes. Hence, the number of cigarettes are dangerous.
    Is that right? or Am I stupid ?
    Tara, dearest prof. A

    • @AquaSventi
      @AquaSventi 4 роки тому

      It answers the question : "After doing what?" So 'sitting' acts as an object of the preposition 'after' and is therefore a gerund.

      @@AquaSventi actually, the original FORM of this sentence is After I sat home all day, I was bored. Here, AFTER IS A Conjunction, right? so after this sentence is reduced into After sitting home all day, I was bored. the word -After is still conjunction, NOT PREPOSITION!Word- Sitting should be present participle!

    • @juliosaraza634
      @juliosaraza634 4 роки тому +1

      @@ericstevens2506 The thing is that you can replace "Sitting home all day" for "IT" that's why it's a gerund. It's the subject of the sentence and the subject is usually a noun or a noun phrase.

    So in "Jane loves writing scary stories", 'writing' is the direct object. 'Scary' is an adjective modifying 'stories'. But what grammatical role does 'stories' have? My understanding is that nouns have to be the subject or the object of something (like a verb or a preposition). Can 'stories' be an adverb or an adjective?

    Trick after watching this video.... Look at the word before and after the "ing" word. If a proposition precedes it, it's an object of preposition; if a helping verb precedes it, its a verb; if it precedes a noun, it's an adjective; if it's the subject of the sentence, it's a noun and lastly if its follows a verb, it's an object. Can it be an indirect question? Yet to find out.
