You know, I really miss this guy. It’s bittersweet to hear him planning about the future of his bonsai, but knowing what it says about the quality of a man’s character to stay committed to what he loves despite circumstances. I hope that those who have his bonsais remember to every once in a while, maybe post a video about what happened to this or that tree. I ‘d like to think he’s still enjoying them… RIP from the US Tony!
Nice little tree that one Tony. I spent few hours this eve trimming and wiring my raft hawthorn that I have called Tony after watching you do yours on one of your older videos. Look forward to the next video oh I hope you had a ice cream aswell 😊
Yeah they're not really my cup of tea Adam but it's always nice to try something different. I only ever wanted it for cuttings, but fortunately my dad likes the tree so it's his now
What a gorgeous tree ❤ How about selling the cuttings, when rooted? I would love to have a little „Tony’s Bonsai Memorial Corkbark Elm“ 🙏😘 Enjoy your day. 😘 Cheers, Martina 🙋♀️
Hi Martina. That's a great idea, except for selling them. (Money ain't much use to me 🤣🤣, however providing I make it to spring I'd love to post you a few different cuttings . Email me your address etc to anthonyhigginsonphotography@gmail.com
Tony, I need to take a leaf out of your book so to speak. I keep meaning to take cuttings before pruning but never do. So many free plants on the compost heap. 😕 Thanks for the update & enjoy the rest of your day. All the very best, Nick
Nice, and a good reminder that my Central Park Chinese elms are getting quite leggy. Mmm, more cuttings to get started. It’s in my genes. I get it from my mom.
Cork Bark Chinese elm are such beautiful small bonsai trees with lovely craggy bark. I have two and they are a couple of my favourite trees - so vigorous and easy to look after and convincingly to scale with their twiggy branches and tiny leaves. 😊
@@TonysBonsai I definitely love my Cork bark elms over my regular Chinese elms. Just adds that extra element of character and age, but in all other respects they are exactly the same. They make super little bonsai trees.
Yeah, no doubt they make good bonsai perhaps for me the bark is almost one element too far for my tastes like the extra taper, but thinking about it I do like the smooth bark of a less mature hawthorn too
Should these be kept indoors in winter as they are often sold as indoor trees? I have a funny diet and am experimenting making choc ices from greek yoghurt, and separately cottage cheese, it is just about keeping me good. You two enjoy yours. Xxx keep growing.xx
Lots of funin todays video but Whattston are probably the best for quality bonsai and shipping in the country (my opinion). I am glad you removed that branch and I might have taken a few of the others lower down - they are what will make the best cuttings right now. i would just put a half cut plastic drinks bottle over the plant pot to get some humidity. I think that to be a Shohin ice cream it needs to be another few cm taller - someone obviously took the apex off :)
Love the gnarly trunk - super shape! I've never seen Chinese cork bark elm before - do you find the bark looks a lot different than regular Chinese elm? Thanks for that massive tease with the ice cream lol!!
Hi Sue. Yes the barkis definitely very different. Personally I would say that I prefer the smoother bark of a normal Chinese elm myself, but in terms of looking old, the cork bark definitely wins
Nice and tidy Tony. I see a bottle brush plant behind where you were working today. How about styling that? The reason I ask is I've got a similar sized one and I haven't got a clue what to do with it. Need inspiration.
Cheers Kevin. it's really interesting that you say that. Only yesterday we were looking through random plants to work on. Which one is the bottle brush? I know what they look like in flower but not in term of the leaves?
@@TonysBonsai it's in a terracotta coloured pot on the ground to the left of the camera in this mornings elm video. Long slender leaves. Red(bottle brush) flowers when in bloom.
Yeah I agree. It's a bit jarring, but I'm hoping that given time it will mellow out and take on a more natural look probably a good 4-6 years, but it should happen as it thickens. Then again the next custodian might like a praying mantis style tree and embrace it as part of the design. I like either options

Nice. I hope Tony is looking good and is a little bit unusual!
great little tree. the ice cream looks good with our 37C weather here.
That's way too hot for me mate. Never mind the ice cream. I'd be melting!
Love cork bark varieties. Looks great. Don't often see you work on such delicate little trees.

I have a lot of small pre bonsai trees that size so I found this very interesting, I’ll be pruning mine tomorrow now. Thanks for inspiring me Tony
Always pleasure mate. Sharpen your scissors, get the kettle on and enjoy. It's looking like a lovely day

Thanks Michael. It's a lovely little tree I think

Yeah we do have to keep on top of our groups that's for sure mate. Luckily it's great fun pruning Chinese elm I think
Aw Tony that tree is a beauty! They root so easy from cuttings! Love the shohin chocolate chip style 😂
Cheers Adam. I'm like you mate. I just can't resist taking cuttings. It seeems like a crime just sweeping them into the bin
Cheers buddy. I went rogue today and worked on a huge informal upright mr whippy 🤣
Cheers buddy. I just can't bring myself to sweep good viable cuttings into the bin
Amazing!
I was very impressed!
Thank you😄
I am in the early stages of developing elm bonsai (about 25) your video has given me some great ideas
Excellent. They really are great trees to work on and providing we let them grow our in the spring they seem to allow us to do whatever we want
@@TonysBonsai so true

It's an interesting one as I'm not sure I'm sold on the bark. I think I prefer the standard Chinese elm.

Well look at that! 🥰 And some Bonsai thrown in to entertain while you eat it... 🤣
A lovely Elm. I could had bought it too for that price, think it would been worth it.
Thank you yes I think it was a very fair price for such an already well developed Bonsai
❤
Were did you buy the shonin. Chocolate chip looks highly trained 😊
shohin chocolate chip style😂
🤣 surely second only to the formal upright Knickerbocker Glory-style😂

I'm no expert, but I believe that these are fully hardy outdoor trees Mandy
As for your latest desert recipe, I'll just say Hmmmm 🤣
