Hi Blaine, thanks for providing these video's, they're all very informative, and you're evidently quality at what you do, so respect! I am relatively new to plastering, I have done odd jobs here and there, walls, ceilings, reveals etc, from new builds boarding to plastering to painting, to bonding out/replastering existing walls... I also live in Hastings, and would love one day to observe your work/technique first hand, so if you ever need a labourer for free, a day here and there, hopefully that can be arranged so I can progress further in this trade confidently. Would be good to have a chat as you seem like a nice guy overall also, all the best!
Well done mate and fair play for your work. That would be great - I can’t see any problem with that my friend. Hopefully see you in the future. All the best 👍👍
@@PlasteringForBeginners Oh great! I'm self employed and work on my own so I'm pretty flexible with availability. So yeah, let me know when and how we could take this forward and make it a reality that would be quality! Thanks mate I appreciate the response!
Just got a apprenticeship in plastering and its mostly prep like ripping skirting off and pva, then I do about 2 sets a day and maybe a ceiling. I'm only on £30 a day at 17 but hoping to get somewhere with this.
My father is seeing a huge downturn in demand for his plastering. He used to have a regular deal with a company that installs summer houses, but they have gone with taping and jointing over plastering as they say it is cheaper and faster as they can decorate so much quicker. He said he spoke with other plasterers and they are seeing a huge downturn on new build work as well. My father does have a ot of rendering work lined up though, so he is hoping for some great weather this year.
It’s very rarely a “good Job” even then it can bite ya on the arse - date rate generally works out fair for both on the unknown jobs and get the meterage out for the new builds and straight rooms! Top man Blaine as usual- say it as it is !

Great video buddy , the amount of money that can be lost going around looking at jobs and pricing jobs is the worst part of being self employed. The prices you charge are bang on in my area too. I take my hat off to you for talking about it as all other tades think its a big secret thinking that someone is going to go and under cut them. It all comes down to knowing what your worth. I've had customers come to me say someone else is cheaper then me and I say that fine thank you for contacting me if you need anything else in the future you have my number. 9/10 of them would rather pay my rate then save the small amount and possible have to have it done again. Keep up the great work buddy.
So true Mike!! You summed it up nicely...it’s about knowing what you’re worth and having the confidence to price accordingly. Thanks for the comment Mike...hope you’re well my friend.
Thanks Blaine for this, I asked the same question on a forum last week and not one person would even give me an average of what they charge. I am multi trade and learned plastering about 15 years ago and worked with a friend for about 6 months. I am now a lot faster and a good plasterer ( thanks to your videos) but I don't do it all the time. I do kitchens, bathrooms, bricklaying etc. I'm still quoting on what my mate did all them years ago. Can you do a video on seeing customer for the first time, what you say to them etc and then can you show us how you then quote them. Please keep the videos coming mate.
Simple answer is: as much as You want. This applies to every trade, not happy with Your wages? Search for wealthier customers. It's crucial, You invest in advertising Your services, people start calling, BE PICKY. It's better to price 10 jobs and get 2 of them, than price first one under the reasonable cost just to get a job. That way You'll end up working every day for pennies...
Great video mate I work with a council in Scotland we get paid around 400 a week what really pisses me off is that painters get paid more than us. Crazy
Pretty gutting to hear that your day rate is about what we paid a plasterer a couple of years ago but we got a crap finish. I ended up re-doing five of his walls because it was less hassle than trying to get him back. Might re-do a sixth too as I'm doing the other walls in that room now and they look a lot better in comparison, especially around the edges. Got to put up with a lot of his North Sea looking skimming unfortunately, and that's over bloody plasterboard! Still got his knackered cement mixer that he never bothered to remove as well. I'm still very much an amateur at plastering but your videos and advice have helped me get pretty damned good results from day one.
I’m glad Iv followed you as I have done most of my house now typically getting better room to room, first room I did I couldn’t move for 2 days afterwards, every muscle in my body. If I didn’t have the ox speed skim it might have been a different story rather that flatten trowelling and levelling so thank you for all your videos. For me personally it was to do my own home and not professionally. I feel I just wanted a professional to look over my shoulder to observe but now if a friend or family ever wanted a room I would probably have more confidence to do it. Your rates are good and you are a fantastic professional that has a passion for detail not like the cowboys in Hastings that just clearly take the piss and don’t care if it cracks and looks like some of the roads in St Leonard’s. Cheers pal your fellow mancunian 👏🏻
Thanks mate! It’s great to hear that the videos helped - it always pushes me to make more. And respect for your hard work, especially since you’ve started from scratch. Well done! Great hearing from a fellow Manc again 👍👍
Hastings seems a popular area for tradesmen, I used to be involved in construction and used to bump into quite a few guys from Hastings working in Tunbridge Wells and area. Sussex and Kent is a wealthy area full of period properties, always loads of work.
I made about £2.10 shillings a WEEK in 1967. I was a 15 year old apprentice then. The firm I served my time with was called Roberts Plasterers, of Didsbury, Manchester. I did receive excellent training from them, and attended The college of Building in Manchester, I enjoyed all the theory and decorative plastering. I guess that apprenticeship itself was worth a lot of money. Do we still have apprentice plasterers?.
I’ve always stuck to no more than 6 bags a day.I prep, mix and clean myself.I started off years ago on the yts earning £27:50 for a weeks work.Site work now is minimum 190 day rate for 2 sets.Price is 4:50 walls,6 plus for lids,beads/trims 2 a linear extra
Great video on self employment Blaine 👍 If you ever need help in this area or any other area of self employment the group is there to help & is focussing around this subject. Your bang on with all your points & examples the only thing I would add is that you mentioned that your time spent doing off the tools business tasks ie visitations, emails, pricing up, picking up materials this time ultimately has to be factored into your daily, weekly, monthly earnings so that you are not only earning when your behind the trowel Also there might be a time when you decide to employ a member of staff in your business or you may have runs of prep! In which case working on either day rate or meter may not be feasible & a fixed price would be better
I live in Australia and getting a plasterer for those prices where I am would be impossible. Hell I was recently quoted more than $30 (£16) per sqm for putting up plasterboard and taping etc. Guys in your game are about $60 per sqm if you can find one. Speciality plaster is even more. I'm not saying prices over here are too high but plasterers are on the skilled worker immigration list so tbh if Australia ever opens it's borders and I was in your position I'd give it a thought.
Hi mate! I worked in Oz for a year and was on $40 a hour - it’s was easier work and a much better work/ life balance. NZ didn’t pay as much but i loved it over there too. Beautiful part of the world. Just too far from home for me!!
It's very busy at the moment partly because until last week we had strict COVID related immigration restrictions. I'm not sure if it's still the case but we used to have a points system for immigration so it balanced out skill demand, age etc. Usually you are either sponsored by an employer or "self-sponsor" if you are going to be a sole trader and are on the skills-list. I think immigration would involve tedious form filling and waiting in the slow wheels of our government departments. Also, different states are in different positions both economically and from a COVID border control perspective. E.g Lots of building happening in Queensland but wages are typically a bit lower there (that may have changed in the last 12 months). Western Australia has closed it's borders to everyone.
Good breakdown mate , always wondered what the lads are earning now back home. Mainly do dry lining /gib stopping now where all nee works on meters and lineal breakdowns. Your average 3 bed 170sqm house be around 5k which you'd like to get done it a week bigger ones 6 7k and you're looking at a week and a half. Skimming over here is versa different but I usually charge around 700-750+gst for bog standsrd bedroom. And everything hard to price we negotiate an hourly charge up rate @ 60-65ph But you make the best hourly rate when you work it out on the big spec houses nice easy sqaure rooms where I can run all the toys 🤑
Me and my mate do £200 to £250 a day before tax on site. You have to spread some though.. done for 2pm which is one of the joys of being self employed. No one tells you when you can and can't go home.... 20 years experience, fk i feel old saying that.
100% customers think you're creaming up because of what you charge per day. But the expenses of fuel, tax, national insurance, wear and tear on your van/tools. Advertising costs and like you said down time (unpaid) looking and quoting for jobs. When you are earning you need to earn well as you need to make a profit to cover any sick days and holidays.. Keep up the good work bro!
Im a bathroom fitter, started on £50 a day as a laborer for my father in law...9 years later im self employed and running my own fitting business. Start low and good things will come!
@@PlasteringForBeginners Hey, Thanks for reply! Could you make a more "advanced" plastering tips video? Involving things like Cross troweling, what happens when you do it to not doing it. Or how to not get tiger stripes/blisters. Cheers bud. Might be hard as you probably never get those haha!
Very good to know, i just did a large basement my self (largest job I had done/quoted to date) I got over eger and quoted £100 day rate no labourer required... After 2 days I realised I need a labourer and then had to pay them £50 day rate, without extra cost to the originals quote
Sorry to hear that mate. It happens sometimes but the best thing to do is learn from it and move on. It's happened to me before and it'll probably happen again...just got to learn. Good luck, all the best 👍
Great video. Thanks for sharing. Very often overlooked is just the base cost of being self employed, not just the tax but insurances, motor costs, equipment and on and on.
I used to be on site for 6.30 and have a gage on by 7.30 .hard old days but we made money. Back in the day when we had carlite finish which we used to put it in a bin with 3 bags of board finish and get the entire upstairs of a Barrett house on .good old days !
Well said after all the years I’ve been plastering you get the few jobs gone bad and lose hand over fist plus paying others so it is not always a good trade to be in
Every plasterer is different. Some do a day work rate some do house bashing on a price and some of us work for ourselves and absolutely cream it doing outside Coloured renders. Domestic internals and specialist Lime work.
Hi, good insight to rates. I’m out of sync with pricing as I’m now employed but wondering if you know the price differences between private and site skimming (sqm site prices). Private I always worked around the £10 mark but I never did site work so have no clue on pricing. Forums are very hard to gauge. 🙈
Never be ashamed of what you earn. If you do a great job and keep your standards up you can charge top rates you always make a loss on the odd job so have to charge enough to cover the bad jobs or the ones where the customer fiddles the deal or fails to pay.i don't mind doing walls but ceilings are just beyond me.... To damn hard
FairPlay to you Blaine you are elite as a spread, I’m not at your level mate I do 4 bags skim and day my partner he is like you, about 6 bags master on the stilts and edge, we are a team off two based in guernsey, decent rates and work. Great work ethic mate, the feeling you get at the end of of big hit knowing your have to start you second, knowing your already running late after all the prep, first thing in the morning 😂
Fair play Blaine , being honest with the world ,but at the end of the day it's a fair days pay for your ability and high standards, I know people who couldn't blow there own nose but expect to earn 350 a day ,much respect 👏 👍
your so right i am a painter/decorator self employ price but plasterers make a lot more starts at 400 a day in scotland up in aberdeen some charge more than that
Not a Tradesman I know that would give out figures as honestly as Blane has. Very informative for all looking to put in the graft and hard work required to be a successful plasterer.
Thanks mate! I really appreciate that my friend - that means a lot. Cheers!! And I’ve only done it once Alf. It’s tougher than it looks so respect if you do 👍
When its a job i cant do myself then i get a professional in to do the work , my motto is "a fair day's pay for a fair day's work" . Good to see that you are putting money into a pension,my other motto is " put as much in as you can for as long as you can", seen a lot of my mates prefer to piss it up against a wall and some are still working beyond retirement age.Maybe i just got lucky but I retired at 50 .
I have been building for over 48 years my trade is bricklayer, but over the years I have all the discipline including plastering the problem with that is I am not fast as you, not that it is a competition we all work at different speeds and quality of finish. The one thing I have said many time to clients, is biulding is not like buying a car, the difference in quality of the work can vary significantly, you need money in the job to make a good job. Peace of mind when employing a builder is so important. I have been to put work right and some of it is criminal.
Very good point here mate. It’s not always about speed if the quality is sacrificed during the work. I’ve seen lots of bad jobs from “fast” plasterers. It’s not always the best answer 👍
as far as im concerned you give a price and they take it or leave it. A lot of jobs you cant really do by square meterage. Theres so much preparation involved and as you say theres pricing , overheads etc. Not to mention the working conditions. The real money is made in the peoples property you are renovating.
I charge £150 per bag of multi finish. If it's kitchens, £200 per bag. So that's £15 to £20 per square metre. That's North England. I never do site work, just private domestic customers.
No domestic plasterer should work in meterage blaine, only site lads with full houses to go at... I want a full days wage no matter what i plaster, whether it be one ceiling or a full room. We price per job! materials + wage + over-heads and never ever tell a customer what your day rate is.
That's a fair point pal. To be honest I personally make more money from meterage but I can see your point. Thanks for the comment and I hope you're well my friend 👍
@@PlasteringForBeginners i am thanks blaine. I find with domestics their is as much prep as plastering.. I get alot of my work as i am very tidy in what i do! We roll and stroll every surface, we tape skirts, coving windows! Tarp outside near the grid/tap etc.. When finished we hoover and clean the windows and wipe down all the surfaces! All this effort needs paying for! Plus im slow so wouldnt make money on meterage! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. But 👍 for a very honest video mate..
I was just talking about teaching a complete Beginner today so this is timed perfectly. Definitely. This sounds mint...could you send an email to the address below and we’ll sort it. Cheers, speak soon! plasteringforbeginners@outlook.com
Quite frankly, considering the effort and skill involved, you're a bargain! I can only imagine the cost in time plus tools and materials were I to attempt a room myself: I appreciate this isn't the same for everyone but I'd much rather lay out £300 for a day to get a job done to a professional standard than go buy everything I need and spend 3 days arsing it up! Saying that, I will be having a go (based on your videos) but I'm under no illusion: I'm doing it for fun rather than economic reasons! :-)
I don't understand why in the UK there seems to be lots a plaster work, while over in North America it's all drywall. Why did drywall not take over in UK?
200-300 a day is cheap for your quality/professionalism actually. Try getting into Venetian, and microcements, you can make much more and they’re usually smaller jobs. Easier on the body too.
Hi Blaine, enjoying the vids and emails 👍🏼 could you do a video on your power float please? How to take it apart to change heads and how they attach? I’m thinking of buying one but haven’t been able to get my hands on one to look it over properly before I commit hundreds to one. Would appreciate it, thank you
I’m only 19 years old and currently on £100 a day. I recently been skimming out a full (4-£600) room a day with a labourer who was learning to skim for the first time ever so I’m having to sort out his wall on top of my own work. I have been asking for £150 a day for the days I skimmed the rooms and have been told it’s what I’m supposed to do? I know I’m young and might be asking for a lot but I always leave my work perfect, sockets clean, floors scraped and sweeped left spotless. I just feel like I’m getting the piss taken out off me for £100
Wish I was a millionaire haha. I don't think people also understand the tole it takes on your body im only 29 and starting to feel it. Wrists and elbow. I'm looking into being a sparky as they don't have half as strenuous Job as a plasterer.
Haha this is so true mate. I think I'll make a video regarding the side effects of the trade because it does knacker you in to be fair. That's why I try to avoid smashing meterage everyday because it just hurts after a while. Thanks for the comment, hope you're well.
Hi Blaine love the shows I'm a big fan. A quick question please. I've boxed in a soil pipe and have added an access hatch. The hatch is plastic. I'm going to plaster my effort. Is it a good idea to edge the access panel hole with scrim tape. The hole is straight through one sheet of board ?
Hi Marty. In a ideal situation your plastic hatch will have a frame with a profile rebate that is larger than the hole you have made. If this is the case no need for the scrim tape. If the plastic hatch sits within the hole without a overlap the best option would be to fit the hatch and then use a flexible caulking around the edge of the profile as this will be paintable but also have a little bit if flexibility.
@@PlasteringForBeginners Also No power on house sites any more so have to bring your own generator and petrol or use the DeWalt paddle mixer. I use the DeWalt with a headtorch .
i charge per job rather than meterage has a little kitchen may be 5 or 6sqm but all angles against kitchen units ect where a big open wall same size meterage be way less time so i find can shoot myself in foot with meterage price, i just work out time it will take to do job then price for what i want
So what's the meterage expected of a trainee? I tried getting into it a few years back but because of my location i found it hard going (lots of sole traders who don't really need an extra set of hands except for day pushes)
Bloody good lad you are, have helped me every step of the way with setting up my business. i've been thinking a lot about getting on price work recently as i'm getting 4-5 bags on in a day at £150 a day and a £70 labourer. Anyone have advise on price per Square meter N.Wales?
Most sites and I'm talking big sites around the West Midlands. It's from £3 - £3.50 a meter on price. On £3.25 at the moment. Occasionally get £4 but that's rare.
@@PlasteringForBeginnersBlew my head off when you said your meter rate. Recently worked on a Kier site. So no cowboys sites. Around £670 for a 1 bed apartment, £720 for a 2 bed apartment and £800 for a 3 bed. On the house bashing for 2 months when we were desperate. Around £850 for 2 bed and £950 for 3 bed. They were an absolute pain and totally mot worth the hard work and hassle. I could get £4 a meter but means 3/4 hours travelling there and back. So it's not worth it.
I'm currently working for a company asking for 30m a day there paying 11 an hour. In this 8 hour day there expecting me to pva sometimes bond and board and skim in a day. It's actually made me personally feel so much better that you have said sometimes you can only get 1 hit. Sometimes u can get 2 it just varies hugely. When doing work for myself iv always done it on a room by room base not sure why but it's never done me wrong :)
Yeah, that's not good David mate. It sounds like their taking the piss out of you pal which is bang out of order. Have you tried looking at other firms if not going back to self employment?? Give it a go mate... They are expecting way too much for peanuts. All the best and good luck my friend!
@@PlasteringForBeginners hoping to get a start with new firm but thinking of just going back to self employed which I did last year made a good living but fancied a change of pace. Nobody gets rich working for somebody else lol
I'm on a day rate. They ask for 2 guages a day. £170 a day. I probably do 2-3 bags a day plus prep etc. As long as I'm doing 2 guages a day then they don't care about the hours. So I'm on site for half 6 and leave for half 1.
Down south you give them a price and that's it. My sister inlaw had her front room ceiling skimmed £325 for a 10ft x 15 ft ceiling he was gone by lunch time. I phoned 6 plasters they all said they don't price per square meter. They seem to be charging what they want in the south well they are in my town. I don't work full time plastering just Saturday's I charge £22 a square meter, and they say oh is that all, I must be cheap compared to who ever they phoned before me.
Also what about a video on pricing up patching up with bonding, going over artex with bonding first, also what about boarding walls, ceilings etc before you skim it. These questions would really help your subscribers out. Cheers Blaine
I used to get £23 a week take home and be mixing twenty ton of floor screed a day and pushing it for a Irish bloke pete cullam to hod it up three floors unbelievable way to have to work but luckily enough I was very quick plasterer and used to make really big money but price work and like urself I found and established my own rate but now I’m in my sixty’s and still got it but I’m sure people think at this age you had it not true and found a chap who’s 76 and putting over 100mm of screeding a day by 2pm
Hi Blaine, love the video’s. Looking at your expenses, you are paying way too much for your accounts. My wife does this for a living, so I know how much she charges.
I was plastering for 6-7 years 12 yrs ago couldn’t make anymore than £300 in a day Back to plumbing now so much better a bad day I get £300-£400 Good days £800-£1100 a day
Alright mate, when you work on a meterage, let’s say the ceiling is 30 square metres. Does that count for the whole job or is it 30 square metres x 2 coats? Always wondered that. I know some guys in my area (Reading Berkshire) charge £12. Square metre if it’s going over old walls etc but I never know whether that was the whole job like I say or per coat. Cheers mate
Really great videos - the honesty in this one moved me to comment... Many thanks for all that you do on YT..... (If I can make one suggestion a lapel microphone would much improve your audio but I do understand it's another layer of post production hassle.)
Think you need to be clearing at least £200 after tax mate their not just paying for the meter but your skill and experience it’s a bloody hard job up your rates 👍
I charge £230 a day for just labour but that me and a labourer I can’t put on nearly as much as you can so I’m looking forward to speeding up and charging per square metre
So does a renderer earn the same amount as a plasterer? lol Apparently, at least in the UK, for outside work you would be a Renderer? Whereas for interior work you would be a plasterer ? in the US it would make any difference, there are no renderers, only plasterers.
Try working in the NHS as a RGN, especially currently, if you want to know what poor pay is really like mauling yourself in life and death situations. This is aside from the 3 years degree-level training (4 years and $80,000 cost in the US) outlay initially and working with more shit and infectious disease than you'll ever mix in a bucket in plastering! Mind you, the only tool you'll every need to do the job is a good pen with plenty of ink in it. Just sayin'... ;o)
If ur a tradesman Uve got to b on £200 a day min it’s gotta b a bag a week at least that’s daywork but like u say pricework is a different thing and ur rates r more than reasonable I’ve known spreads on £15 sovs a m but something else to bear in mind if ur gonna b a spread is as u reach late middle age ( late fifties) ur gonna have problems with ur body and ur not gonna b able to do what u did when u was younger ie frozen shoulder tennis elbow etc and ur gonna slow up making less dough it’s a young mans game
This is the problem isn’t...growing past the age of working! It’s scary knowing so many plasterers who are bartered from the trade. Respect for your time and thank you for sharing. I really appreciate that 👍

Hey spot on mate . Potential is massive. In reality it's a rough trade. Plasterers are a special breed 👍
That's a great suggestion mate. I'll look into it and try to get it sorted. Cheers and good luck with your plastering 👍

Crazy
Crazy mate!!! That’s mental
Fair play to you mate - I’m the same. I work alone and aim for 2 hits a day. I’m happy with that. Thank you for sharing mate. All the best 👍
Very true my friend. Thanks for the comment - very good points here! All the best...thanks for watching 👍
Great video. Nice to hear the squeaky bits you rarely hear talked about
I live in Australia and getting a plasterer for those prices where I am would be impossible.
There’s plenty of work from what I found Tony👍👍
Think I'd miss the English weather going to Aus 😏
Great and honest video !!!
And everything hard to price we negotiate an hourly charge up rate @ 60-65ph
But you make the best hourly rate when you work it out on the big spec houses nice easy sqaure rooms where I can run all the toys 🤑
Me and my mate do £200 to £250 a day before tax on site. You have to spread some though.. done for 2pm which is one of the joys of being self employed. No one tells you when you can and can't go home.... 20 years experience, fk i feel old saying that.
Brilliant video I am a plasterer, I still love watching your vids mate.
Thank you for sharing this video. X
Very true my friend!! Thanks for watching - I really appreciate it. All the best pal!!
Great video as usual. Big respect!
Thank you mate. Much appreciated ☺️

Exactly that my friend! Respect to you - all the best!!
No tradesman should be charging 100 quid a day might aswell worl in tesco
Sorry to hear that mate. It happens sometimes but the best thing to do is learn from it and move on. It's happened to me before and it'll probably happen again...just got to learn. Good luck, all the best 👍

Great video. Thanks for sharing. Very often overlooked is just the base cost of being self employed, not just the tax but insurances, motor costs, equipment and on and on.
Very true my friend! There’s a lot that you have to pay in the background!
I used to be on site for 6.30 and have a gage on by 7.30 .hard old days but we made money. Back in the day when we had carlite finish which we used to put it in a bin with 3 bags of board finish and get the entire upstairs of a Barrett house on .good old days !
That’s graft mate. Fair play to you my friend ...that’s some heavy work. I couldn’t do that so respect. All the best and thanks for watching 👍
Well said after all the years I’ve been plastering you get the few jobs gone bad and lose hand over fist plus paying others so it is not always a good trade to be in
Appreciate your honesty
Thanks for watching pal 👍
Well done for putting yourself out there mate 👏 👍 👌 💪 Go on the spreads !!!
Thanks pal! I appreciate that...cheers
What a great video I’ve been plastering for 20 years knowledge good onya Bruv
Thank you mate. I really appreciate that...thank you for watching!!
Fantastic honest video thanks
Thanks mate! I appreciate the comment...ceilings get easier after time. It's just practice 😉
Thanks for being so honest.!!
Thanks for watching mate!!
Very good info mate
Cheers matey!!
Great video buddy!
Thanks a lot Marcus mate. Hope you're well 👍
Fair play Blaine , being honest with the world ,but at the end of the day it's a fair days pay for your ability and high standards, I know people who couldn't blow there own nose but expect to earn 350 a day ,much respect 👏 👍
Thanks mate. I appreciate that - there's cowboys out there but I hope I make a good impression for the trade. Cheers pal...hope you're well!
your so right i am a painter/decorator self employ price but plasterers make a lot more starts at 400 a day in scotland up in aberdeen some charge more than that
@Jordan Graham i will keep you in mind next job that needs plastering how much do you plaster in a day
Fair play to the spreads in Aberdeen - it’s fair. It’s a tough trade!!
Not a Tradesman I know that would give out figures as honestly as Blane has. Very informative for all looking to put in the graft and hard work required to be a successful plasterer.
Can he run s insitu cornice
Thanks mate! I really appreciate that my friend - that means a lot. Cheers!!
And I’ve only done it once Alf. It’s tougher than it looks so respect if you do 👍
The name of non time served tradesmen is a improver
People only notice bad work. Good work blends in and not noticed . Your better been slow and good than fast and bad
Great video fella 👍🏻
Thank you mate!!
as far as im concerned you give a price and they take it or leave it.
Brilliant video thanks 😊
Glad you enjoyed it
No domestic plasterer should work in meterage blaine, only site lads with full houses to go at...

Think it amazing thanks for your honesty keep the good videos think u are awsome at what you do

Great advice
Thank you mate!!
£30 a hour on day work, £14-16 a metre on hard wall and again on the skim, I live in guernsey, a years work ahead of ourselves.
I don't understand why in the UK there seems to be lots a plaster work, while over in North America it's all drywall. Why did drywall not take over in UK?
Hey I really enjoy your videos. I'm interested in trying this out. Any chance I could shadow you for a couple days to see what it's really like?
200-300 a day is cheap for your quality/professionalism actually. Try getting into Venetian, and microcements, you can make much more and they’re usually smaller jobs. Easier on the body too.
This is my next project pal. Stay tuned for that 👍👍👍
Hi Blaine, enjoying the vids and emails 👍🏼 could you do a video on your power float please?
@@PlasteringForBeginners even with speedskims and flex trowels they help but never can they take all the strain.
Thanks, that was very helpful x

In Essex 4.25 m² on sites. No extra for ceilings . Do 6 bags a day every day
Thanks for the heads up mate. I really appreciate it 👍
@@PlasteringForBeginners
Also No power on house sites any more so have to bring your own generator and petrol or use the DeWalt paddle mixer.
This makes sense mate. Sometimes it’s better this way and you always have to consider the job ahead of you. Thanks for the comment pal 👍
Thanks Blaine!

So what's the meterage expected of a trainee? I tried getting into it a few years back but because of my location i found it hard going (lots of sole traders who don't really need an extra set of hands except for day pushes)
Nothing is expected from ours as long as they are learning and getting better every mix. Better a good job and slow than fast and terrible.
Mate would love to hear some advice on insurances and private pensions from a fellow tradesman.
I’ll look into it…thanks for the suggestion mate!
Bloody good lad you are, have helped me every step of the way with setting up my business.
i've been thinking a lot about getting on price work recently as i'm getting 4-5 bags on in a day at £150 a day and a £70 labourer.
Anyone have advise on price per Square meter N.Wales?
How long have you been going for Tommo?
Thank you mate and well done with your Plastering. Sorry I can’t help with rates - I dont have a clue but good luck. All the best
When you say 4-5 bags is that in total or just the first coat ?
Most sites and I'm talking big sites around the West Midlands. It's from £3 - £3.50 a meter on price. On £3.25 at the moment. Occasionally get £4 but that's rare.
That's mental. It sounds so low...respect mate! You must be pulling some serious meterage. Fair play and thanks for sharing 👍
Some sites up my north east are only offering £2.50 a meter that’s why a keep away from sites now up here
@@PlasteringForBeginnersBlew my head off when you said your meter rate.
So it's not worth it.
same here mate we are on 3.50 a metre aim to do 100sqm a day.
Good break down mate, what would you say a plasterer earns per year on average?
Thanks mate! I couldn’t say - too many variables to give a definite answer...sorry

The joys of been self employed been there loads of times wouldn’t change a thing though 👍
No trade is earning any less than 200 quid a day so I would say you are right in the sweet spot there mate. None of this should be a surprise.
Agreed 👍👍
Down south you give them a price and that's it. My sister inlaw had her front room ceiling skimmed £325 for a 10ft x 15 ft ceiling he was gone by lunch time. I phoned 6 plasters they all said they don't price per square meter. They seem to be charging what they want in the south well they are in my town. I don't work full time plastering just Saturday's I charge £22 a square meter, and they say oh is that all, I must be cheap compared to who ever they phoned before me.
That's mental mate. If the whole town is like that then I'm guessing the Plasterers rule the roost. Crazy prices that though... Thanks for sharing!

Cheers pal. My accountants good to be honest - he’s worth the money but thank you 😊
I was plastering for 6-7 years 12 yrs ago couldn’t make anymore than £300 in a day
Back to plumbing now so much better a bad day I get £300-£400
Good days £800-£1100 a day
Alright mate, when you work on a meterage, let’s say the ceiling is 30 square metres. Does that count for the whole job or is it 30 square metres x 2 coats? Always wondered that. I know some guys in my area (Reading Berkshire) charge £12. Square metre if it’s going over old walls etc but I never know whether that was the whole job like I say or per coat. Cheers mate
That’s for the whole job mate. So the 2 coats cover the 30sqm! Hope this helps my friend 👍

I followed your tip and everything was fine till recent. The plaster is powdery can you help?
Think you need to be clearing at least £200 after tax mate their not just paying for the meter but your skill and experience it’s a bloody hard job up your rates 👍
Is your meterage price the same when you pva and overskim or, do you charge more for that?
Same mate 👍👍
I charge £230 a day for just labour but that me and a labourer I can’t put on nearly as much as you can so I’m looking forward to speeding up and charging per square metre
Just stick to it mate and speed comes afterwards! Thanks for sharing and good luck my friend 👍
Fair prices in my opinion.
Just sayin'... ;o)
