Master Mechanics: Canford Classics Porsche Restoration

  • Canford Classics has been in the business of restoring vintage Porsches for well over a decade now, and Alan Drayson didn’t start the company on a whim, either. He remembers being smitten with the marque since his childhood, and he had his first Porsche at the ripe age of 17; a 912 in need of attention, which Alan gave to it in the form of a restoration carried out after his schoolwork was done (and not always after), fueled by his enthusiasm and financed by his part-time job in a local bar.
The facilities of Canford Classics outclass the garage workspace where Alan’s first Porsche restoration took place all those years ago, but while the tools and knowledge have evolved rather dramatically since then, it’s still propelled along by Alan’s passion and respect for the cars. The team of restorers responsible for the thousands of hours that go into each completed project share that drive, too, and the work they put out speaks clearly to their level of talent.
Canford Classics handles everything apart from chrome and powder coating work in-house.
Each restoration begins with a complete disassembly of the car and its driveline, but rather than mailing out the pieces into a spiderweb of outsourcing, you’ll find the Canford engine room busied with machining the valve guides while the bodywork is being painted and perfected downstairs, waiting for its full suspension rebuild from the room next door. In this week’s film, join us on a trip to Dorset to peek into the barn doors of this special operation as we sit down to talk with its founder.

All of this is so worth it, wonderful and admirable- from the original designers and engineers who created the cars, to the uncompromising restorers. I’m in awe and have great respect for all of them. And for our Western culture that made it all possible. And also for this channel that finds and brings these great stories to us.

Awesome. And not in the cheapened, colloquial sense. Cool beyond anything built today. I’d take one of these restored cars over a modern Porsche (even if the new ones are still great cars) any day of the week. Keep up the magnificent work, you’re an inspiration.

In house Dyno, down draft paint booth, dry storage for finished vehicles ..... I betcha this fella has an in house upholstery, keeps some spares on storage, and runs a machine shop upstairs along with the engine department.
There used to be a shop on Ashland, MA USA that had that kind of coverage, fully dedicated to Mercedes Benz. I can’t remember the name, it was right along route 20. I was impressed upon visiting it. I think they started as a two bay car garage on Hudson, MA. Eventually they expanded.
My nod to the editing folks at petrolicious. They got it. Keep on churning.

Wow, just wow. If we estimate ~1,500 hours or work times an ultra conservative rate of $100 USD per hour. This build would have cost $150,000. Wowza! This is totally at another level.

@@GTE_Channel I, respectfully, disagree! It's 50 years of racing, research and development... Someone has to pay for that. Not to mention 70% of their cars are still on the road. I have an 80's car, an 07 and a 15' and they all are over built.

Factory Porsche part prices fluctuate weekly. It's 150K+ in the US to do a complete restoration on a air cooled Pcar, Labor rates are $110 and up. Porsche is probably using the Ferrari Classic game plan. Just type in Porsche Classic, press search and select your country. The bespoke companies that can do it inhouse are the only way to go...unless you can do it yourself. (Pelican)
