    As a very young child, I would sit for hours and watch an old diesel mechanic (RIP Bob Wallace) that was amazing with the old Detroit’s, he told me every damn thing he knew about them, not sure why because he complained about literally everything, but he liked me I guess..listening to you reminded me much of how he was with his knowledge of those old Detroit’s. Great video

    I still kick myself in the ass !!! I had a chance to buy a 74 A model Kenworth with a 1693 . From my friend that I would rent when my old cabover Freightliner PC Cat , would go in for repairs . Had the shop foreman at that time tell me. You know why Cat quit making the 1693 ? They couldn’t make enough money on parts because they ran so good!!!! Thanks Professor JPAYDIRT for another CAT educational video !!!! 👍👍👍👍👍

    I wouldn't worry about the crank if you were to DI that 343. The 3406PC and the 3406B used the same narrow bearing cranks and B's will go to 600hp at the tires without any trouble if properly tuned. The reason on the 3406C and later engines for the wider rod was for bearing life. On a 3406 or B to be safe you want to roll bearings about 250k miles if it's a road truck, or about 175k or so if it's a heavy haul/low mileage application. Water aftercoolers are also very efficient compared to air to air's and maintain a more consistent charge temp, but if you use engine coolant then at cruise you loose some efficiency due to the coolant temp. However, if you isolate the aftercooler and run it on it's own system they are very good. I've done quite a few 855's and N14's that way and a few early 3406B's. Not 100% sure, but I think the 7FB 3406's were the highest factory pump timing and were around 26*'s (I'd have to look in the book to verify but that's close anyway).

      Patrick you are not kidding!! Heavy equipment mechanic here and i used to love my job and couldn't wait to fix whatever problem was going on. lately I have been seriously considering quitting this career. Its no longer fun with all the shit engineering and horrible parts quality. Recently I had a new hydraulic pump straight out of the box grenade within one minute of operation, and very expensive boom cylinder leak worse than the bent one it replaced, and the latest was a "certified" reman perkins engine for a rock processor go nuclear with under 5 hours of run time due to a new pos temp sensor. Pissed isnt even close, the added down time for customers is horrible. One good customer is a lot like ol paydirt and loves his vintage equipment. I really dont give a rats ass about fuel economy. The machinery that will run all dam day and half dead will still out work this garbage they sell today. Cat, Commie Cat, McCloskey, and i wont even go into the dam semi bullshit.

    Thanks for your response Jeff .i worked as a performance engine builder in the mid sixties to the late eighties
    Many Chevy and ford engines two very involved 440 molars that were quite successfull
    But returning to your 1693...recently last few yrs BMW was tasked with providing a 3 liter Diesel engine to mimic the performance level of the gas engine...they made considerable improvements to the piston design with Mahler
    They have a steel piston that is quite amazing....and very lite....you would certainly get them to make a set I’m sure

    Ah the piles of uppers and lowers I have put in Cat blocks over the years! Old Kenny probably couldn't haul them all. lol Your cheapest route would be custom pistons. You could probably get a proper speced set of pistons for less then 2k. It wouldn't have the steel inserts for the top rings though. maybe there is enough room in the pan to stroke the crank and make up that pin height difference? Turn your 1693 into a C18!! :-)

    Running those power levels is one thing. Pulling your loads is another ball game. I'd say your driving style allowed it to live as long as it did. I like seeing equipment pushed then reviewing the failure modes. Going DI would be interesting, but not something I would do on a machine I need to pay the bills with. I think if you get your air and fuel dialed in you will be more than satisfied with the end result.

    3406 A and B went to a wider rod and main bearing. Later figured out that the wider bearing on the rod still wasn’t wide enough especially when the DI 425 B model came about in late 85. Not to get into great detail of timing changes etc. putting combustion directly on top of the piston is hard on on bottom end. 3406C came out and had even wider rod journals. Same crank as a 3406E minus the gear up front

    Mahle does in fact ,make a steel piston for a few applications...but Diamond pistons does make custom diesel pistons...if you can give me your email I would be glad to forward you the information about the engineering BMW did to make 650 diesel horsepower from a 3 liter inline six cylinder....they had mahle involved in the steel diesel pistons..which was not easy as many issues had to be resolved....but just a thought as I’m very impressed how much you have invested in this engine design...my limited experience with them has only been through listening to owners who had success with them in how they claimed they never wore out...but they were not in the higher horsepower ranges..good luck

    Depends what your going to use Old Kenny for when your done Jeff.Show truck work truck or both that would determine the horsepower.If your plans are just doing some hauling with the bottom dump or pulling nothing really heavy on the lowboy I think 425 to 500 would be good.I wouldn't go nuts with the horsepower if it's not necessary.

    ,,, much less money. Keep the rods, machine the 1693 pistons for a combo larger diameter heat plug that would have the combustion bowl shape to it. Actually wouldn't be a heat plug but a steel combustion bowl . And yes, you can ignore any balance problems on a six cylinder, just keep all the pistons the same weight, regardless of how heavy they are . If you want: quieter, cleaner, more power, easier on the walls and bearings, build a common rail system. I put this in Malinson's and or Rutherford's ear(s), also . Entirely within Malinson's capabilities .

    Hi Jeff ..I’ve been watching you and am very impressed at your depth of knowledge...and your work ethic...what I don’t quite understand as money is not the only directive is why you want to bring a outdated back to life again
    I’m not saying that you need to switch teams..like the six Cummins..which when I first saw it introduced at a truck show and commented to the Cummins rep that it looked like a Plagiarized version of the 1693 cat...he kinda got pissed off
    But my point is why keep beating a dead horse...is there a possible interchange with a non emission C15
    I see impressive power numbers for real world longevity use

      Well the A model KW is a pretty popular truck for restoration and keeeping CATs first big bore on hiway truck engine in it is a must, I would equate it to restoring my 73 dodge challenger with a chevy motor in it, LOL and I have this same engine in my 637 CAT scrapers, it's called a D343 in the equipment but it's the same engine as the 1693

    HI Jay Blaylock (lol), Question - will an AFR (Air Fuel Ratio) sensor work to tell you if you are getting the correct air? I work with some gas fuel injection engines and run AFR instrumentation and I can program fuel mixtures to a gnat's whisker, full throttle 12.1~12.8 in about any engine speed range. Wondering if the oxygen sensor put in the exhaust stream somewhere, before or after the turbo will help you know the Air/Fuel ratio being combusted [prevent piston failure] Ask yer engineer buddy with the calculator.

      On Diesels they are monitored by Pyrometer or EGT, same as very high end race engines. Ideally one Pyro bulb on each exhaust port.
      But now I'm curious. Does anyone now if an O2 sensor could live in a diesel's exhaust stream ? I'm gonna say NO. Soot deposits and all that good stuff diesels are known for. Someone with the know how please chime in and set the record straight ! 👌🏻

    You gonna use a 325 horse power intake manifold or are you going to go for a custom built one when you switch over to radiator mounted charge air cooler?

    Yes 1693 is a man's engine with the need of a giant bank account to keep them up-the whole reason they came out with the 3406-which it has the same bore x stroke.

    It's all about air (o2) fuel ratio. Black smoke is nothing but a waste of fuel. "0" gain in power. Get that ratio right throughout the full RPM range and you will be the winner instead of the dirtiest.

    Hey, Jay, could you number the 1693 rebuild videos for us, please? That way we'd know if we were seeing them in the right order. Mostly for future review, like a second time they're watched. Thanks. Maybe for all the Old Kenny restoration.......

    Jeff, was that spacer plate used as cheep way to increase the stroke of the engine

    • @russellgier5489
      @russellgier5489 4 роки тому +3

      It was for a flat deck surface, without counterbores

    • @jcarne1015
      @jcarne1015 4 роки тому

      John Warden Spacer plate won’t increase the stroke. Only way to increase the stroke is to increase the rod journal throw on the crank, which increases the travel of the piston.

    • @frotobaggins7169
      @frotobaggins7169 4 роки тому +1

      @@jcarne1015 i think he meant as a way to add space for a longer stroke to a shorter stroke motor. ie: bigger stroke crank, longer rods, taller pistons. so they don't poke out the top of the deck.

    • @jcarne1015
      @jcarne1015 4 роки тому

      froto baggins Hopefully that’s what he meant. I’ve run across a few guys who thought that putting stroker plates under their Harley cylinders would increase the stroke though.

    What good would be gained by changing it to the other type? The engine failed as designed. Would changing to modified parts improve the longevity of the engine? The expense of rebuilding a stock Cat engine is already too excessive. Reinventing the wheel with all the modification parts probably cannot justify the associated risk of premature engine failure.

      what failed about design bet never saw a 1693 in person much less ran one thw only fail they had was cats piss poor counter bore liner ser up outside of that the runningest pulling engine there is hands down one thing your r ite about cost but then theyre all ridiculous anymore
