It’s not as if Terrorist groups had to do any recruiting: When you kill people’s family members, destroy their homes and businesses, try to hide behind bland phrases like “collateral damage,” don’t be surprised when you and your entire endeavor become “collateral damage.”
The way the military hierarchy is set up in a pyramid is a very intentional effort to diffuse any individual’s feeling of responsibility for the situations the boots on the ground actually experience.
Unfortunately, it often doesn’t seem to work that way.

@@timothygunn4160 Yeah that’s literally the whole point of my post. Iraqis were so optimistic in 2004 and it’s super depressing knowing the hardship Iraqis were gonna be in for in the coming years.

Iraq, Libya, Syria, Afghanistan ... one blunder after another.
I fear it goes back further than that. We've been at war with regularity since WW2. Really none of them were well executed or worth the cost in terms of govt spending but especially in killed or injured Americans and coubtless millions dead on other side. Korea, Bay of Pigs invasion, Vietnam, Grenada, supporting right wing guerilla groups in central america to overthrow the democratically-elected socialist govt of places like Nicaragua; heck we even sent weapons to the Mujahedeen in central Asia so they could fight Russians. Then Golf War Part 1, then Bosnia then USS Cole then 9/11 so we've been fighting in middle east ever since. It's been 20 yrs and we've had tens of thousands of US causalities (dead or disabled). As many that died in Iraq and Afghanistan, we've lost in suicides among vets.
We spent TRILLIONS in Afghanistan. We spent TRILLIONS in Iraq. What we could've done with that money... not just back home, but all over the world. I suppose it's not that simple. Most of that money was spent trying to help Afghans and Iraqis, but sending that type of resource to those places just grew corruption, empowering our enemies. If we sent that money (or food and medicine) to any trouble place like SE Asia or Africa, it would also breed corruption and given more power to warlords.
So... shall we do NOTHING? We can't do nothing. But one thing that seems to be a no brainer: we could feed Americans; rebuild our own cities; avoid crippling entire generations with student debt. We could maybe do something about healthcare. Fix our rail lines, our bridges, or general infrastructure. We lose BILLIONS in lost time just in NYC due to delays for commuters using a 100-yr old mass transit system.
Did you even watch the report? It offers plenty of evidence for genuine progress in the region, and that was back in 2004!
Vietnam, Mexico, Japan, Canada and much more lol, they have the world record for most wars.

I have watched almost all documentaries from that time with Martin Smith. He was (is) brave AF and really, an excellent journalist..
Martin is an absolute hero and frontline has had a tremendous impact on my life. Thank you frontline.

I truly believe all people should try and understand what led to this crux. The humanitarian crisis that those in the Middle East face is something all people should oppose. It’s horrible. All people matter.

There's profit to be made when you make tax payers pay these defense companies/engineering contractors for all the gear needed for an army to destroy an area and then pay to 'rebuild' the shit you just destroyed. Meanwhile you just create more enemies and either sell them arms or get the tax payers to fund a new destroy/rebuild campaign.

The best Iraq documentary is "once upon a time in iraq"...hands down the most informative and indeepth decumentary..really an eye opener I recommend you guys go watch that one.
Iraq was the best country, but the Americans came across the seas, invading the country of Iraq, and they killed two million or more unarmed civilians and destroyed the country, and all of this is that you, the Americans, talk about freedom, about what kind of freedom, you talk about devastation upon destruction, about your terrorism, about your crimes.

Wow so much respect for martin smith…driving down roads that are extremely dangerous and meeting the top people in the country.
Despite the biased and paranoid troll commenters, Frontline has always offered excellent detailed reporting, seeking facts, and to the best of their ability, boldly confronting players on both sides of an issue or subject with hardline questions. Very few other investigative or news agencies have offered the consistency and quality of reporting over time up to present day like Frontline has.
I join the many people that comment here in thanking Frontline for offering these excellent videos for free on this channel, including the archive videos posted recently.
Regarding the Middle East, they provide interesting, sobering (and at times, depressing) insight and context to the events, ignorance, deception, lies, countless lives lost, etc. that make up the panorama of futility that so many have attempted over the last 20-30 years in changing the the way people feel and in what they believe in that part of the world. It has been this way for centuries and will probably not change anytime soon, if ever.
Reports like this video and others almost 20 years old posted recently, combined with current events, provide a valuable historical perspective in that futility.

I was listening to Colonel Mayville talk about his being worried about all the different ethnic groups not recognizing each other’s rights to be involved in the same cities and such and it’s sad that we speak in a condescending way that omits the fact that we started all this mess. We destabilized Iraq and Afghanistan as bad or worse than they ever had been before.
I was in the Army during the first Gulf War, I’m a proud American and I support our military every second of every minute of every day but President W and Cheney and Rumsfeld put us on a collision course to ruin generations of afghan and Iraqi children’s lives ….. and all the American families that have paid a needless price for these two wars that were absolutely pointless, we gained nothing when it’s all said and done.
Thank you for your service and for speaking the truth. This should become American wisdom and we must keep a far tighter rein on our government.

I was there! Camp Taji/Cooke 03-04, Camp Taji again Jan 05-Jan 06, and Camp Liberty Oct 08- Oct 09! And I can honestly tell everybody in the comments, we did 1000’s of missions and I still don’t know why we were there or what was accomplished 🤷🏾♂️

What the U.S Army should have done, is listen to people from day one. Stay out of their neighborhoods and respect their customs and culture. Should have never dismantled the old Iraqi army, because that left hundreds of thousands iraqi army soldiers and officers without pay and no pension and no retirement pay. They should have had culture advisers from the first day to avoid conflicts. One wrong move from a soldier could instigate a non ending war. They just didn’t listen until its too late when they reinstated some of the old army officers and staff in 08.

If he tried to do this same thing just a year later, no way he would have made it. If he even made it down to Fallujah it would have definitely ended there with tragic results unfortunately.

Do not overlook this video was first aired in 2004. The situation in Baghdad is very different and NOT in a good way.
Kirkuk... This is where I was stationed in mid 2006 with 3rd Brigade, 25th ID (2-35 Cacti). Then on to Baquba in March 2007 after my unit got stop lossed to help 1st CAV as they were getting pounded really hard. My company got attached to some newly stood up Batallion from 82nd Airborne (Mechanized Cavalry). We cleaned the place up for 2 ID Strikers who arrived later and wrapped up the major operation we had opened.

As a vet, it makes me wonder why we even bothered. All that money spent on trying to bring a third world country into just the 20th century. And for what? They are more interested in defending their religious beliefs than the lives of their own people. I have learned so much from Frontline. I support PBS monthly for that very reason.

This really never gets old. There is not much known about pbs frontline here in the East African region. But whoever gets to know about this cutting edge journalism is thrilled by its inciteful revelations. Some of the topics covered perhaps might not directly correlate with what happens this other side of the world Africa and Uganda in particular...but it shapes our global understanding of events and how there is a synergy of happenings that directly affect our country's political transactions. The story of PTSD of the a one great marine that committed suicide after battling with post combat depression was too touching. Thank you Pbs and it causes me to question, Can't America stop it's insatiable desire to be a global power and let countries manage their own affairs and stop the East (Russia) versus West (America) syndrome. People's children are dying senselessly

I don't know why my country and my government has this insatiable need to go into other countries and meddle in their affairs. So much violence in so many people lose their lives over these senseless acts by my government. I'm in my late sixties and I've been around long enough to realize that the system has been broken here in America for decades and I don't support either party. I think they're all corrupt. It is high quality journalism. Be aware that the videos they are uploading to UA-cam are older than they currnet and recent journalism. Sometimes, that means it is important to see when it was made. This one, for example, was made before the insurgency in Iraq became so persistent and dangerous. A year later, Iraq looked VERY different.
The film did not tell us about the uranium bombs that America blew up Iraq for more than 15 years before the invasion, in which hundreds of thousands of children died!
The film did not mention to us about more than a million Iraqi civilians who died as a result of the invasion and as a result of the terrorism of the Bush Jr. administration
Depleted uranium was used in the Gulf War as well as this invasion/annihilation of Iraq. It also didn't mention the real reason we initially attacked them, why we're still there, nor did it mention the billions of dollars that was supposed to be used to repair the country that was instead stolen by US military brass and whoever else, and no mention of the looting and destruction by US soldiers of ancient artifacts, books and historical ruins and relics dating all the way back to the dawn of mankind -- as though it wasn't bad enough to destroy the people but finding it necessary to erase their history too, and it forgot to mention how they still don't have fresh water to drink, or talk about all the other ways we didn't bring "democracy" to their country, nor did they mention how our government hired mercenaries like Blackwater who had no accountability and subsequently ... well, you know... How many lives on both sides were destroyed and lost for the benefit of the criminals in charge?

As a Soldier who served with the 3rd Infantry Division in the invasion and early liberation of Iraq in 2003, this was an interesting film to watch. The events of this film took place just a couple of months after I left. A lot changed between when we were turning our areas of operation over to units like the 4th Infantry Division and the 82nd Airborne in the late summer of 2003 and when I went back for my second tour in 2005. This film was very eye-opening, And it should have been shown to military leadership at every level as a primer on what the mission was and what to do and what not to do just between COL Mayville from the 173rd Airborne trying desperately to explain in Kirkuk why the Kurdish leadership has to do the right thing and embrace everyone for the sake of stability and the asshole, LTC Drinkwine, in Falluja who obviously had no grasp on what a complete fucking mess of things he was making. Drinkwine incidentally never rises beyond the rank of Colonel and is tied to other terrible failures with his toxic leadership climate over the next decade while Mayville rises to LT General and goes on to do many good things.
I like the thinking of COL Mayville. He seemed wise and caring.

I always think the american way for fighting a war in a foreign country, calling it a _"tour",_ shows how detached the wars are from American.
Soldiers go on _"tours"_ of war. Crossing oceans, fight, kill _(sometimes getting killed)_ and then, if alive, shipping home to the safe haven. Maybe going to another _"tour"_ in a different country. While for most people/countries, war is something happening in their country, border region or even backyard.
Going on _"tours of war"_ even sounds f**cked up.

Great to have these documentaries on UA-cam. I have great respect for the Americans who dedicate their lives to serving our country under difficult circumstances. However I am continually amazed by how tone deaf and unprepared they seem in discussions with locals. Shame on out government for this lack of preparation.
I never served primarily because I am ineligible due to taking insulin since I was nine years old. However, I have traveled the world in private industry roles. Staring at your notepad, only bringing your head up to preach (at a 3rd grade level) to the local leadership about the givens of a situation etc…is not a hearts and minds winning strategy. E.g start around minute 16:00.
