The real death of socialism in the Third World didn't start in 1991 with the breakup of the USSR, but in 1979 with the Iranian Revolution, as it proved that Western imperialism could be defeated not by taking up Marxism but by the retreat of the oppressed back into their traditional identities and religion. Mentioning this in a post-9/11 atmosphere will definitely get you tagged as Islamophobic, but it would be foolish not to bring this up as an important historical event which changed the field (at least, phenomenologically speaking). Very few oppressed people identify with relationship to the means of production anymore; even in the Global South, most of the militant movements are all religious or ethnic-separatist. The real question for the 21st century is, how do genuine socialists grasp those movements towards religion and ethnic folklore and turn them into platforms for socialism?
Chaya Bat-Tzvi _"…Western imperialism could be defeated…."_ I think it shows more how the non-West can be defeated, and can be defeated, judo-like, by using its own peculiarities against itself. The West (western Europe/North America) remains undefeated.
Socialists just need to speak loudly about racism and oppression. Not just limit to class oppression. Sometimes they differ and sometimes they feed upon another.
I assume because she wrote the chapter for this subject in the relevant book, ABCs of Socialism, that more or less the same content would be present in the book.
People need to support worker owned businesses that begin to compete with capitalist business. Both need to make enough to pay the worker. Only one needs to enrich the owner.
