Oscar was the player who got me to appreciate jazz. Regardless of his phenomenal technique, his music is always understandable and his sense of swing is sublime.
What a sublime treat to listen to this brilliant, gentle man. The Art Tatum stories are priceless. Anyone interested in Tatum should read "Too Marvelous For Words", a wonderful biography on this one-of-a-kind talent.
This is such a treasure... thanks so much for uploading it. What a pianistic giant Oscar was and A.P. is no slouch either! Just a joy listening to two people, clearly fond and admiring each other, chat and play unforgettably beautifully. I'm guessing this was late 70s, early 80?
I've been looking for over a decade on how to play left hand stride like teddy wilson does. I find the best jazz pianist to ever live (besides tatum) showing what he does and the video is short circuiting :/
By second, he actually means his fourth. Andre says it right after him: "Oh so you play them with the thumb and four?" The full interview without the choppiness is on youtube
that song at 1:31 i was thinking "from whom did he steal that ? I've heard it many times" Vince Garauldi? Then I remembered it from a trio album with Nils, stuck in the middle of the cd. I didn't realize Oscar composed it and had created such perfect, "simple" (hooky), lyrical little 60's flavored jazz tune in the same general "genre" as Garauldi's. "wheatland" probably Garauldi got inspiration for his tunes from this. or vice versa?
Wow. You're a real fan. I enjoyed your comment. Art Tatum lived not too far from me in Los Angeles, CA and was a beautiful man. Very talented, highly spirited with a God-given talent. Just think, where I lived was considered a barrio. Ray Charles was a big Art Tatum fan and he and Oscar Peterson play together in the Y/T video: Ray Charles & Oscar Peterson Play A Blues Duet - Very Rare. Be well harlemcat23.
Glenn Gould, Oscar Peterson, Angela Hewitt. Canada has sure had a fine selection of world class pianists. Mr. Peterson had classical training and it shows in some of his Bach tinged compositions. I bet with those majestic hands he could handle Rachmaninoff easily.
Thanks for the upload. This is a great interview. Can you fix the sound on this part? The left channel keeps going off and it's hard to hear. The volume could do with a boost, as well; I had to have on full just to hear it at all. Thanks.
Oh yes!! please! I am pianist. Do the thing more easy for you...translate spanish or english subtitles. Oh please, if You prefer just comment the more important points of the interview. Are You musician? Dancer? I neeeeeeeeed to learn!!!!! THAX TO MUCH TO REPLY!!!!!
Composition was not Oscar's forte. He did write a few tunes but nothing that has stood the test ot time. That tune is from his Canadiana Suite. In spite of Oscar's enormous talent he had to remain in awe of others before him. He no doubt heard other pianists who not as famous as he was who showed him things. That is why he is not boastful or egotistical. He had resepect for others. Bluesy lines. Some people are critical of Oscar for not playing more abstract. He was capable. Entertaining blues.
people like you who put these clips on you tube should be awarded!!
you bring quality to this otherwise pretty dumb medium!!
thanks again!!

And the stereo gets wonky. It's so sad.
You can find the full 40 minute interview on UA-cam !!
Not even besides Tatum, emotion and sensitivity count for a lot and Oscar is worlds away from Tatum in that.
This interview is priceless!

Yeah, Wheatland is one of Oscar's original tunes.

Hey newjackswing21, thanks for uploading this, do you know what year this interview took place?
Glenn Gould, Oscar Peterson, Angela Hewitt. Canada has sure had a fine selection of world class pianists. Mr. Peterson had classical training and it shows in some of his Bach tinged compositions. I bet with those majestic hands he could handle Rachmaninoff easily.
Rob Brien don't forget Chilly Gonzales Canadian piano master
Not quite 'classical' but worthy mentions: Diana Krall, Robbie Buchanan.
