    whats so strange here?...oh, its talented people in real conversation about an art, articulate, genuine...whens the last time you saw present day popular 'recording artists' speaking in this way? i find this absorbing & entertaining, i hope we, as a society, can get back to, focus more on, & honor real musicians, not just electronic appliance operators with a hunger for stardom....

    I don’t get the anecdote about count basie and lil darlin (more or less 5:30), can someone explain to me?

    • @Veaseify

      Basie had a very minimalist, spartan approach to piano playing. No Frills - so Oscar was worried the Count would think he was ripping off his style.

      Acts on the same bill don’t do the same material. The audience doesn’t want to hear the same song twice.
      And ‘Li’l Darlin’ ‘is a Basie classic, so Oscar playing it when Basie was about to do it was bad musical manners.
      Oscar just got carried away, and Nils was trying to stop him.
      In revenge, Basie performed all the stuff Oscar had just played, so the audience would remember his, not Oscar’s versions.

    Can someone tell me what tune 5:34 is? It's a Basie tune right?

    • @guillermosanmiguel
      @guillermosanmiguel 6 років тому +4

      You're right! It is a Basie tune. It's called Li'l Darling, composed by trumpeter Neal Hefti for the Count Basie orchestra.

    there will never be another era which began with BEBOP......and hungry musicians who lived or starved on success or failure.....as with other individuals in other industries....life has changed and i agree with The Flutevisions when said.....''there will never be another OP''.....i dont agree with Felix Scott however with all of what he said.above....Felix?...Oscar was onthe Andre Previn show.....not the other way around.

    Art played out of tempo a lot. Oscar played in tempo better tahn Art. Improvisation is a different thing. Some people have to write the music out first. Other people improvise with good time better than others. Music is has multiple aspects and all players have some strenghts and some weaknesses. No one person can do all things well. Andre is no doubt a better transcriber than Oscar. Andre plays with good feeling. He communcates well. Basie knows what to do and when to do it.

      Felix Scott truth. Oscar is the man. Basie invented “being the man”
