Caves, mountains, and canyons. These are three typical favorite landscapes one would like to spend the day hiking. Let this solo guide you through the three of them. Soft mallet rolls open the piece and welcome the listener to the first part of the trail. The music develops and builds throughout the second movement. And a Reggae "chucking" style third movement finishes it out. The player will be challenged by out-of-this-world interval changes and independence. Trust me, the piece will be as fun to play and see as it is to hear!
This solo is written on a grand staff for 4-mallets. Both the original 5-Octave version and a 4.3-Octave version are included.

I just bought this piece to learn over the Christmas break with some new Chorale Mallets I got and I can't express how much I love this piece, it sounds beautiful and keeps me entertained as I practice it. Yet another great piece, Thanks Eric Peel!
Thanks for playing it, Duncan! Have fun on your break.
Always great, always amazing. Always an out-of-body listening session.
Thanks for your kind comment and thank you for listening and following me!
Your pieces never cease to astound me. Great work.
I bought it today and I'm already in love. I love the Ragtime section!
I love this, Eric!
Beautiful playing Eric, I'm loving the Marimba!
Amazing solo Eric
Brilliant!
Thanks very much!
Thank you Tyler, I'm glad you do!
And as always, thanks so much for listening!
Thank you very much! Piece is "medium to advanced" I would say. And soft yarn mallets for Caves, and medium yarn for Mountains and Canyons.
this sounds very interesting
Thank you!
Thanks! Are you in the process of writing another piece? I would love a duet for two marimbas :)
This... this is beautiful. What would the grade be and what mallets would you recommend playing this piece with? Or maybe different sections require different softness/hardness
this piece is beautiful! What is the octave requirement to perform this piece??

Hey Eric. I need your help. I'm stuck on a choice of what song to play for Solo and Ensemble. last year I played Relationship, and for this up coming year I want a solo. Therefore I'm stuck between Consumed by the Universe, and On a Hike. Now keep in mind. the marimba is my favorite instrument. But I'm curious to know which one you prefer?
+Jullian Encinias I wrote "On a Hike" 2-3 years later and I feel more proud of it. Since marimba is your favorite instrument, I'd say go for this one! I'd be interested in seeing a recording of your playing it for sure.
+Eric Peel Music will do! and btw just got done performing Relationship like 2 hours ago
+Jullian Encinias Good to hear! How did Relationship go?
+Eric Peel Music Well considering I learned the marimba part in 6 days, 2 hours of practice each day, two weeks ago we scored a 1- at Solo and Ensemble. But tonight was by far our best performance!
+Jullian Encinias Very impressive! I miss HS S&E days. Cherish every moment you have now!
Very nice piece, I especially love the atmosphere it creates! Do you happen to have a recording of the 4.3 octave version?
Thanks! I do have the 4.3 octave recording. Send me a message with your email and I'll send it to you.
Nope. I wish though! I am saving up for DSLR so I can start doing some real photography finally, but North Dakota has nothing good to capture! Well it is actually pretty as far as rivers, green grass and big hard wood trees go, but not anything close to Washington.
Thank you!
