I don’t know if they had effects on their mics, but let me tell you Hwasa’s voice (the girl in a white top) actually sounds like that. Her voice is kinda raspy. Also, on top of that she was sick that day. 😉
They had effects on their mics and it bothered me so much cuz it kinda butchered their beautiful raw voices😞😞😞
Hwasa should be having more rasp in her voice while Wheein’s became too smooth than her usual one and there was literally the feedback kinda sound that doubled the voices you can hear. Solar totally overwhelmed the mic you know, even the autotune could not take her power. And Moonbyul was the only one who i could hear properly because technically she’s not singing but just rapping but the autotune immediately snapped in place when her rap started becoming melodic and i hated the heck out of that.
Mamamoo doesn’t need autotune. Their raw voices are already amazing!
Aphestia Actually, I don’t think is autotune, it might be just effects to make their voices more prominent like equalizers or something related. But anyway I love how their voices sounded. Also, those type of effects are needed in those kind of places since it could affect the sound quality, so overall I think the production was great.

@@lifeisnotgwaenchana I think you’re very smart at making it look like you like Mamamoo but in fact you just want to say “they’re autotuned” without sounding like an anti. Points for your creativity! Leveling and autotune are different. This definitely isn’t autotuned.
They don't use autotunes...
Fun fact, they never lip sync because they can’t, they have tried it but failed, they always sing live, mamamoo it’s awesome
The lady that wear white is Hwasa. She has most stylist vocal that you called "vocal effect". It is not "vocal effect", but it is her sound. If you watch Mamamoo live singing, you will understand.

i think they're about the autotune that they put on all videos of idols performing... you can hear the slight robotic sfx on some parts

Of course there are some effect like slightly reverb, etc which is normal in sound engineering. But it is all same for all member of Mamamoo, no special treatment for Hwasa.
there's surely some kind of sligh slight autotune, vocal mixing going on with all of them and i feel like hwasa's voice sounded a tiny bit more effected bc she was sick that day and had a slightly more raspy voice. I know what hwasa sounds like but there was still some kind of vocal effect. Dingo puts in in all these live videos
the girl in the blazer she is called wheein and she is literally the ace of the group and is like an all rounder. her vocals is something she is just born with and is really talented that way, I am glad u appreciate her. wheein is really one of the 3rd gen best vocalists for sure!

Wheein (blazer) and Hwasa (sweats) are childhood friends, they have matching tattoos that say "Resonance". They are considered the top all around vocal group in Korea. They've all sold tons of solo albums as well. The rapper Moonbyul is one of the top credited songwriters in kpop history.

the group is great, the only one korean I continuously listen. It's a shame they weren't promoted much in the west. In Russia for example almost every kpoper listens to them 😅

The “effects” on their vox are reverb and compression combined with 3,000 dollar mics. I have never, ever been an engineer for a live or studio recording where we haven’t used mild reverb on vocalists unless it’s a very lively venue and we’re using room mics. We even apply it to performers in musicals and slam poets.
People like to sing in the shower more than under the blankets for a reason.
^ this. Glad someone pointed this out, thanks man. They have amazing voices and these minor technical enhancements just enhance their voice not so much change it, there aren’t any ACTUAL vocal effects.
P.s. The girl in white was sick that day which is why her voice sounded more raspy and quieter than usual.

Btw in Kpop groups theres a Main vocalist and a Lead vocalist, with Main being "above" Lead but Mamamoo doesn't have set Main/lead vocalist positions. The girl in white on the end is Hwasa and she was sick when this was done and thats probably why she sounds like that. You should also check out Big Mama on Dingo Killing voice, they are an older group and their voices are just so incredible, only the most incredible vocal group I've heard in kpop.
Tbh, hearing people say that there's a vocal effect on their mics is somehow a complement to MAMAMOO hahaha
That's how good they sound live. They sound better than studio versions, believe me. They're the only kpop artists that never lipsyncs or use vocal effects. You should watch more of their performances and hear for yourself. Thank you for reacting to our girls!

@@tajtucker1705 It’s def not a negative thing but it is not a vocal effect- as others were saying, she has a naturally husky voice but it is more husky than normal as she was sick that day (not bullshit you can look it up ) being sick and singing definitely makes it seem like you have effects on your mic though so I get where people are coming from.
And she's unwell too so that's why they're probably thrown off by her voice

There is definitely a slight effect on Hwasa’ (the girl on the far right) mic seeing as she was really sick on the day of this performance but there definitely sounds like there is a slight effect on the other members mic’s too. Their immortal songs medley performance is insane too, it’s live at one of their concerts and it’s a medley of some of the songs they sang on the popular Korean show “immortal songs” where artists/idols (solo and groups) remake some of the most iconic Korean songs by iconic singers and songwriters

Oh I love these amazing young ladies seen the on many episodes of immortal songs 2. One of the girls is more of a rapper than a singer but the harmonies they have is amazing I first saw them when they were just starting out
She has been forced to take a "Rapper's" role, and she does it incredibly well, but she is a very good singer also.

The point of the Killing Voice is that it is LIVE, unaltered, with no real break. This is pure, with NO effects.

Interesting first impressions. They'll probably change a little as you continue. Each member has a variety of techniques in her vocal toolbox that she uses depending on the style/genre of music, the emotions of the song, and the needs of the group. MMM has an extremely diverse discography and, as the saying goes, you ain't heard nothing yet. :) Some info:
Mamamoo debuted in 2014. This medley includes snippets of songs from throughout their career, from their debut single Mr Ambiguous through their 2020 single Aya, which was their latest at the time this video was made. The Dingo Killing Voice videos use an unusual format for a live performance so they can highlight the singing. When performing live kpop idols almost never stand behind mics and sing to a backing track. At a Mamamoo concert there'd be a live band and they'd be dancing. MMM almost always uses hand mics live except on a few songs where the choreo won't allow it.
I have no idea how the Dingo sound engineers processed the vocals other than using reverb and most likely compression but I think Melia's comment about feeling like she wasn't hearing Hwasa's true voice (far right) might be due to the fact that Hwasa had a cold that day and was clearly congested (to fans anyway). Since I know her voice and these songs very well I was impressed at how she used her voice du jour effectively without trying to fight it or strain to get her "normal" sound.
Mamamoo see themselves as a 4X4ever team of best friends (they have a song called 4X4ever) and don't care about positions like main singer, rapper, dancer, etc. When they introduce themselves they each claim two primary responsibilities in the group.
The members from left to right:
Moonbyul - rapper, performance Aka Moonstar - byul means star
Solar - leader, vocals (oldest member)
Wheein - vocals, performance
Hwasa - vocals, rapper (youngest member - the maknae in Korean)
Performance is their term for dance and staging so I think of Moonbyul & Wheein as the dance captains. Up til 2019 Mamamoo did their own choreography.

For more amazing vocals check out big mama’s dingo killing voice! They’re legendary and older Korean group but have come back recently. They are all vocal professors from different universities and have very mature sounds.

The lady farthest left is called MoonByul, she's the group's main rapper, but she also sings sometimes. Next to her is Solar, she's not the main vocal but she is the group's leader, you weren't that far off on that haha Then next to the right is Wheein, vocalist as well, and finally the lady in white is Hwasa, she's a vocalist and rapper. So happy that you enjoyed them!! Mamamoo is such an interesting group, they're extremely talented, supportive of each other, and they're very unapologetic about who they are, and it shows in their music.

That day Hwasa was a little sick. I saw another vocal coach who is also a producer and he also mentioned that maybe there was a bit of modulation in the microphones but that it was something that did not take away the "color" of their voices at all and that it was very normal and common to use it.

-The thing about the comparison between Hwasa and Rihana, I see it as a compliment. Hwasa has expressed her admiration for Rihana on many occasions, and I think she would be very happy to hear your comment.

ON THE TALK OF WHAT KPOP IS, I'm not really sure. I am among 3 ideas of what it is, the one I like the most is that it is only Korean pop music. But it is a bit out of the question when you see other artists classified as "kpop" whose style of music is not pop. Maybe it is just Korean popular music or it is because of a definite way of industry in which an artist works and his lifestyle and music that makes the public perceive. I'm not sure.

@@ChaseandMelia it’s okay 😂😂 BTS just don’t like to be pigeonholed by the K-pop label bc of how they’re treated by the western industry (so they’ve said atp they’re beyond K-pop). It’s been used to restrict/limit their opportunities and the extent of their achievements.
@@Ahjusshi_Brown they don’t like to be “limited” to just the category that is Kpop because of the stereotypical views people have of what Kpop typically is. Ppl in the west refuse to see them as artist/producers/writers etc, which is why the term doesn’t sit well with a lot of their fans. But bts have on multiple occasions acknowledged that Kpop is their roots, but they are just changing it up and doing things a bit differently than most Kpop groups. I feel like for ppl to kind of say they aren’t Kpop at all is kind of ridiculous. I mean they still structure some of their things in the way alot Kpop is structured. And what I mean by that is the, the album the photo cards, the fact that they still perform in Korean music shows (when they have a Korean comeback), or that they still compete in the Asia music awards in the category of Kpop and etc. Also BTS also structured one of their songs (idol) around the fact that yes they are Kpop “idols” but they are also alot of other things as well, that u can call them artist, u can call them idol, either way they are proud of it. BTS should never be limited as just Kpop, they have come way to far and have done/archived so much more for that.
Looove mamamoo ... also when mamamoo was asked about music they did, they said was mamamoo ... but it has to do with the fusion of different genres and not only pop. That is why they always stand out that they do not make a particular genre. I'm talking about BTS and Mamamoo. my two fav groups.

oh and for more information about k-pop and groups : K-pop is Korean pop and BTS cover lots of different genres so we usually say BTS - genre😊 , they are still from korea but we say that they are not k-pop since they are more opened to other styles

I'd like to respectfully disagree to the opinion that BTS aren't kpop because they cover so many different genres. I wonder how much kpop other than BTS you have listened to? People think Kpop and they think of Gangnam Style, or groups like Twice and Blackpink, but Kpop just means popular Korean music. I follow a ton of artists and groups that cover an incredibly diverse range of genres, everything from rock, pop punk, to funk, to blues, ballad, hip hop, EDM, and pop. I think one of the strongest characteristics of kpop is how much genre hopping there is. I also follow a ton of artists who write their own lyrics, produce their own music, and talk about social issues in their music (Psy being one of them). BTS are unique within kpop, but they aren't the only unique group in kpop or the only group that doesn't fit kpop stereotypes.
Take Day6 and Crush for example. Day6 are a rock band signed with JYP that play instruments on stage instead of dancing and they write their own music. Their song Zombie was number 1 in SK for a while and it is a soft pop-rock song about depression. They are still considered kpop.
Crush is a hip hop and R&B artist who writes and produces his own music and recently released a song called Ohio which is about anxiety. He is considered kpop even though he hasn't ever released anything resembling a "pop" song and isn't signed to a major label.
Most people who haven't been exposed to much kpop have some pretty negative beliefs and stereotypes about kpop, and I feel like when we as army say "BTS isn't kpop" we perpetuate those stereotypes by trying to distance BTS from that label, rather than saying "actually, Kpop isn't what most people think it is." For example, most non-Koreans developed their negative stereotypes about kpop from seeing Psy's Gangnam Style, never realising that it is a deliberately comedic social parody song and we just weren't in on the joke. It just seems like we are doing a disservice to BTS and to all the other incredible artists by perpetuating the stereotypes instead of breaking them down.

@@loftyradish6972 thank you for your comment😊 , i also have seeing artist and groups other then BTS ( alot of them ) but i believe that ( not BTS only ) but BTS and other few groups and artist are the one that start this , because if you go back to before 2016-2017 there was not a lot of them that do different sounds and style or write their own music especially in one group ( from what i'v see ) but if you look now just like you said kpop is more open to many genre

So Teji and Boys was one of the most influential groups in kpop history, they were active between 1992-1996. The genres they covered were hip-hop, pop, rap rock, alternative rock and alternative metal.
Shinhwa is the longest running kpop group in history, debuting in 1998 and they are still active, they covered genres pop, R&B, dance, hip-hop and electropop.
Shinee debuted in 2008 with an R&B song Replay and they are still active and influential. Along with R&B SHINee have covered deep house, ballad, rock funk, EDM, electro, hip hop and one member surprised and impressed everyone by singing Nessun Dorma which is opera as his solo song for an entire tour. To see the extent of genre hopping SHINee do, check out some of their live performances for songs such as Replay, Sherlock, Excuse Me Miss, Odd Eye, Woof Woof, Lucifer, View and Selene 6.23, and then just watch Onew Nessun Dorma, because that is an epic performance.
There are some kpop groups that only stick to pop and bubblegum pop but there are also a ton of artists who branch out, some artists such as Lee Hi, Heize, Suran, Dean and Crush never do typical pop music at all and yet they are well known, well respected artists who top the Korean charts.

I know you made this comment 10 months ago but I wanted to add that it's interesting because I feel like Wheein's voice is becoming more and more unstable (probably for various reasons though) but the different techniques she's been experimenting is super cool and I can't wait to hear more from her (she's my ult ult ult bias btw). Meanwhile I'm actually really appreciating Hwasa's stability despite her less sustainable technique (based on comments from other yt vocal teacher reactions). I don't always like that she uses the same vocal style for most songs but when it sounds bomb it sound BOMB. And Solar what can I say, on top of stability I think she's been improving in such subtle but impressive ways that I think she's gonna have a really really long successful career. I used to dismiss her a little bit because they give her all the big belty lines and she gets a bit shouty sometimes but man she's actually gotten so much more control nowadays what a queen.

But, constantly comparing BTS to Mamamoo throughout your reaction is really irritating. Let's enjoy each group for their own merits... Thank you. Mamamoo are seasoned and highly respected live singers that use extremely minimal "mic effects" or backtrack.
