Welcome to my channel, I started woodworking with my grandfather as a young boy. I continued woodworking through high school, and started woodturning after seeing a turned project in a friends shop. Some of my fondest memories are working with my grandfather in his wood shop. Being able to share our passion for woodworking, ties it all together.

Carl, I would take some rubber vacuum hose and split it on one side and put it on the edges of those support cups. That should help stop the damage.
Don't hold your breath I have been wanting to make one for about 8 months now. Thanks Carl!
Carl my friend, I have watched most of your 200+ videos, and enjoyed them all, and learned a lot from each of them. I have to say though that this is the first time I have seen you talk so much "BALLS!" ;). Great demo mate, really enjoyed it.
Take care
Mike
Well done Carl, you are one talented turner. I enjoy ALL of your videos, very informative. Thank you for sharing your talent!
I like your woodturning spheres.
Thank you Debbie, Robbie is back I'll put a link in the description.
finestkind!!
I like this kind of video's, they open up new ways to ideas.
Please keep them coming.
BTW I's a bit of a pitty that UA-cam doesn't have smileys
Excellent jig and well demonstrated. Thanks Carl
Neat jig. Did you ever find anything about Robbie the irish turnner. I really miss him. Keep up the great work. Very educational. Thank you for all your sharing. God Bless.
So this takes all the creative work out of making a sphere.
Hi Jake, yes I think the jig less method work great too. I did a video on the Q&A channel on dust collection a few weeks ago I'll put it up as a video response.
Take care, Carl
Can't wait to see what you come up with Erik.
Cool tool and well demonstrated, Sam
Thank you Agustin, I would like to see your jig when you get it done.
Take care, Carl
Thanks Peter, I'll check out the video and give it a try.
Take care, Carl
You can buy Morse taper socket extensions to get the post away from the lathe support.
Wow! he did a great job, I'll give that a go thanks.
I didn’t realize this is 10 years old
Very cool jig I want to try and make something like that, I am a welder and fabricator so I think I could make something similar. Thanks for the video Carl!
Looks danger and cool!
Thank you Hubert
Thank you Bill
Carl, if you like spheres you might want to give a jigless method a shot (well, except for something to mount the pieces). Start by eyeballing the sphere, then cut a groove at the equator which acts a depth guide when mounting the piece sideways. Search for "drechselkurs söding 07 02 2009 kugeldrechseln" for a video. It's in german, but that doesn't matter. I'd love to see and hear about your experience with that. Love your videos by the way. Take care, Peter
Hi Gary, The website is (woodlandinspirations com). I use paste wax and mineral oil to sand with just to cut down on the sanding dust. A 4" block should be fine after sanding. To get 16 ounces you need a pretty dense wood.
Thank you Alan
Very nice
Thanks Alan, I'm not sure if this is any faster. I'll have to give the jig less a try.
thanks for the vid :)
After 200+ you had to have known it was coming ;)
Take care, Carl
LUIS ALARCON Thank you very much
when the piece still had 6 sides but slightly rounded edges it would make for a cool set of large dice i think!
Nice demo, Carl. I'll try to find this jig here in Germany.
Hubert - Germany
Thank you, I use Staples paste wax.
I saw you replaced banjo for a one with one inch tool shaft. Im starting to turn bowl with the same lathe Delta. You suggest I replace my banjo too ? Thank you for all your videos its so helpy for me !!!!
Thank you very much!! You really don't need to. I just had this one , and it's a tad more sturdy.
Carl, you could probably use some cheap, self adhesive weatherstripping on the inside of the rim of the two cups
Aaron Thomas That would work perfect
great video, nice jig, if you keep the jig set on the last radii you turned, when you remount the ball to take of the ends you can slide the jig along the bed till the tool kiss's the spheres surface, that will recenter it whole unit so you can fininsh off the cut.
I'm not sure with the cup design you can do a oval. I'll have to play around with it a little more.
Hi Carl, very well that tool to make balls, but I've seen the page where they sell and it seems a bit expensive, here in Spain do not sell anything, so I'll try to make one, ami I'm good welding , while I'm interested in something, I give thanks for the demo, you're a teacher, I like all your work and although I do not understand your language if your work, you escrivi helped by google translator greetings.
I would do that too, just to see if it's something you wanted to d all the time.
LUIS ALARCON Thank you Luis
Awesome video! I was curious what those on the headstock and tail stock are called? Holding the project in place? They look like they would be very handy for many turnings. Thanks!
Thank you Johnny! They're cups that came with the jig, but I don't think he make the jig anymore. Maybe check out Rubber Chucky, they have some things that might work. Here's a link, www.rubberchucky.com/#/
@@CarlJacobson I’ll check it out. Thank you very much!
Well demonstrated but I'm not convinced that $349 does any better than a pair of cheap wood faceplates. That's a lot of balls.
Alan Stratton
The jig need to be recentered to finish the ball. If I was going to do a bunch I would do them all at once. Then move the jig and finish them with the jig.
Carl, about 9 years ago you made this video on turning spheres. I have looked all over for those two cups you use at the end of the video and cannot find them. Any idea where I can get them??
I just checked in the description and I don't think he's making them anymore. Sorry about that!!
Carl, neat jig. Quite pricey. If you were doing a lot of them I suppose. The other jig you showed was over $100 cheaper. Alan Stratton's wooden faceplates makes a lot of sense.
Off subject: have you done a vid on dust collection?
Thanks again.
I've noticed that when you sand something on your lathe, you use some type of wax or polish. What is the name brand you use? I'd like to buy some and try it. Thanks Carl, I watch everyone of your videos. I made an acorn box like the one you did. It turned out rather well. Keep up the great work.
If you mounted the jig off center with respect to the axis of rotation, you should be able to carve a torus. I'd like to see that.
Seems like once you turn the ball you could go back to the the gig. Is there a reason to do that last part by hand? tx
Carl,
Where did you buy your cup centers for sphere turning?
They came with the jig, but I don't think he's making them anymore. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
Where can we get that jig again? What was the material you had on your sanding pad? I want to make a croquet set. What approx. minimun size of the block do I need to start with to get it the size of a croquet ball that is 3 5/8" round? It needs to weigh 16 ounces finished, what type of wood should to used to accomplish that?
looks like a far-away-moon
If you left the tool mount in place and just removed the tool holder it would have been exactly centre when you remounted it
It looks like the link for the basic spheremaker is no longer valid. Is there a source for this device?
Sorry, they must of went out of business.
What were you putting on the sandpaper?
It's paste wax and mineral oil, but I know sand with Walnut oil. nilesbottlestoppers.com/product-category/finishes/

where you you buy the sphere jig please?
I don't think he is selling this one anymore sorry.
Funny, that would be one big craps table.
can you repost the web site for the sphere maker
Jim Snyder Her's the website Jim,
www.woodlandinspirations.com/
Ok so where do you find this tool?
It doesn't look like he's making them anymore.
I'm with Alan. $349 for a one-trick jig is a bit ridiculous. Thanks for the great demo though. Hopefully the vendor will see the comments and reconsider their pricing.
Is the guy still selling this jig ? I can’t get anyone to answer me
I don't think he's in business anymore.
Wooden Baseball anyone?
Lot's of padding though. LOTS of padding.
Where do I buy the jig at?
Sorry he's not making them anymore. Here's a link to another one I've used. chefwarekits.com/Sphere-Jigs-c9880436
Thank you.
Why would you not just leave the cutter jig in place and true up the ball with that? Seems wrong to have a jig that expensive and then rely on my eye to finish the sphere to round? Needs some tweaking if you ask me.

Great looking jig
..
12:50 ? non stick? don't you want it TO stick?
I want it to stay, but not scratch the wood.
Hmmm ... $350 bucks.
