- Welcome to this weeks woodturning video.
Woodturning - Crystal ball
In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe to turn a figured maple blank into a hollow form sphere box.

I have spent many years as a woodworker, using my carpentry and joinery skills to create many different pieces. However, woodturning is my passion. I create these video's in my spare time for fun, in between my job as a production woodturner.

Awesome Jack, absolutely stunning quality, great concept and I love the contrast in the woods. Is that oak? Never fail to impress. Top respect from the South East
Figured Maple with oak base yeah. A little ebonising goes a long way! 😉👍🏻

Freehand spheres are a skill indeed , especially that quickly.
Great end result Jack
Thanks Peter. Practice makes perfect I guess. 😊😉👍🏻
Ahhhhh, those 45's just make me warm all over. But seriously turning a sphere is beautiful in concept. But I never thought it would be this beautiful and the stand/secret compartment. That is next level again. Now I must go set my lathe on fire as I am no longer worthy.
Haha give it a go RG. You will be able to do it. 😉👍🏻
Oh I love Jacks ball 😍 👏👏
😋 Jacks color is blue like a Sharpie and his gloves 🖐🖊
Glad you enjoyed it Izzy. 😉🙏😊👍🏻🎅

One of my dreams: spheres in metal, wood, stone... so smooth... and allways elegant... and this sphere is amazing... love it!!! 🟤❤
Love this! Like the fact that the black resin doesn’t leave uniform shapes but looks like part of the actual wood. Great job!
I just watched this again, not a template in sight! I think you earned your sweets on this job. Nice work and best regards. 🙃
Cheers John. Glad you like this one. It’s one of my faves

Omg!!! I love this!!! Brilliant fun and cheeky!!!
Thanks man. It was pointed out that a burglar would probably steal it. So it kind of defeats the object 🤣
@@JackMackWoodturning I’d definitely steal it!!! Genius that the base flips over to be a holder once it’s opened!!! LOVE it!!!
Thanks a lot man. 😊👍🏻🥳
Gorgeous as always. And great taste in sweets as well! ❤️

So skilful to create that freehand - I was at least expecting a template to appear to guide the sphere's shape! Amazing, and beautiful.
Thanks Kevin. Much appreciated 😉👍🏻

Brilliant. Love the ebony effect.

That is awesome. Great work. My wife would really like something like that, mainly for the content inside.
Haha. Everyone needs a hiding place for the good stuff 😉👍🏻
Wow, you made that look easy. I’m intimidated to try a sphere. What a cool piece. Love it
Cheers mate. Thanks for watching.
There’s nothing to worry about with spheres, just Jump straight in and give it a go. Lots of cool techniques out there for getting the perfect shape, as you can see I didn’t use any of them in this video 🤣
Very nice and love your "Surprise" at the end :)
Thanks. 😊👍🏻
Great Idea! Beautiful work of art!!
Thanks Kimber. Glad you enjoyed it 😉👍🏻
Absolutely love this piece it’s beautiful half way threw the turning I thought how good it would be as a sweet jar. Then you did it with an upside down opening I love it I’ve got to make one thank you so much for your channel love your work skills 👍👍👍😊😊😊♥️
Thanks kelvin. I’m glad you like it. Would you make yours a sphere too ?

Very clever and a great talking piece. Very nice indeed 👍🏽😊
Thanks Mark. Much appreciated 😉👍🏻
Fantastic idea and a beautiful job bringing it into a reality 👍👍👍
Cheers Denis buddy. Thanks for watching 😉👍🏻
Ahhh, the band saw! Very good idea for speeding the job and improving that safety, I’m always talking about 🤓👍
It doesnt improve safety Bryan. May speed things up at times or give you useful off cuts of nice figured maple (rare round here) but a bandsaw dose not make turning safer. If one was to assume a piece was safer because it had less pointy corners they may over look procedures ( that take place during mounting and turning) that actually make turning safe. 🥸👍🏻
@@JackMackWoodturning all right, all right, I’ll stop harping on safety 😂. Love your work. Keep doin whatcher doin!
Nothing wrong with harping on about safety as long as the things your telling others are correct 😊👍🏻
Cheers for the kind words buddy 😊
Wow! What an awesome job!
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it
Very cool and nicely done!
Cheers Tork. Thanks for watching man 👍🏻👍🏻
I would order one of these in a heart beat, Great video as the norm from you.
How much would you think it is worth?
@@JackMackWoodturning Sorry I would not know where to start. As you have a number of thing to take into consideration, 1 one off 2 Hand made 3 What it is made with. What are the details of your selling page for when you do start selling your items.
Like I said buddy you are local. If you drop me an email we could work something out for a cash sale. I have pictures and prices of what is currently available. It is all quite pricey though.

Thanks D. Much appreciated 👍🏻😊
Very nice congratulations.....👍👍
Cheers TOF. Glad you enjoyed it 😉👍🏻
Absolutely awesome Jack, love the stand too! Spheres are still very much witchcraft for me at the moment! 😂 Great job!!
Thanks matey. If you look close you’ll notice it’s not a perfect sphere.. but, as they say, practice makes perfect. So just take a day and a pile of scrap wood an turn wide spindles into dome or hemisphere shapes.. that way you practice the hemisphere and can just keep taking another cut each time.
The real key to locking down woodturning skills as to aim to make a very large pile of shavings rather than any finished piece. Shavings are never waste too, they can be composted, or use as garden mulch to keep weeds down under shrubs or used as garden paths or even kindling for starting a wood burning stove ect ect ect.. and that practice will be worth it’s weight in cheap scrap wood 👍🏻
@@JackMackWoodturning Couldn't agree more with that to be fair! Even if you leave the shop with only sawdust and shavings, it's still time well spent! Cheers mate!
Exactly mate. The most valuable thing isn’t an object. 😊
Totally amazing!
Good job!
Cheers Karl. Thanks for watching man 👍🏻😉
Wow, very nice, I love it.

That's cool as heck Jack! What a beautiful piece of wood too! 😎
Man, I wish I had a wood stash like that. 😲
It may be for sale on my website next month once it is live 😉👍🏻
Well that was impressive! Although given the great freehand circle you drew on the blank, I shouldn't be surprised that you could knock it up a dimension and freehand a sphere off the gouge that easily. Very nice.
I’ll give it a shot Jim. Thanks for watching buddy 😉👍🏻
Gorgeous!
Nice one Brian. Glad you enjoyed it 😉👍🏻
Surprise, surprise, I hope you enjoyed the piece of candy. LOL That was great.
