No license plates. No storing a trailer. No separate tires to worry about maintaining. No wiring connections to worry about. Still half the overall length than with a trailer. IDK, the extender sound like WAY less of a headache just for a kayak or two. Just park backwards on a side parking spot and keep them over grass if youre worried about them in a lot.
I covered my extender and on other car roof rack with pool noodles and wrap the whole pipe or metal parts where the load is going to rest ,wrap with gorilla tape ,around and around till it becomes a solid almost rubberized tube ,covering where ever there is a noodle and the noodle is no longer seen and protected from breaking in pieces , it works awesome to protect any load load, helps not to skid , cushions and keeps completely quiet from wind while driving ,forget about painting or scratching the rack or the load, best thing I ever did !...you can also use pipe protector sold at home deport or lowes for plumbing but the trick is to wrap it with lots of tape, maybe first with duct tape and finish it with gorilla tape , that tape is super tough and will last forever.
For those that have the vertical arms at the end of the extender, you can double or triple a ratchet strap across the end and make a web cradle and suspend the yaks. It is much less likely to make a dent.
Thank you for the tips and sharing your experience with the bed extender. I am getting into to kayaking, slowly, and I am trying to learn and come up with ways to make loading and unloading a kayak easier for one person. Thank you again for sharing!!!!
one of the best things to add on the bed extender is to go to your local fire department and see if they have any old fire hoses. the work great for cushioning and protection. Also can use the pool noodles which are cheap cheap cheap
I realize you've got a trailer now, but I'm surprised you don't have a jumbo pool noodle split and zip tied to the top of the extender. Seems like it would solve the paint and hard edge problem.
Yak Motley gotcha. I actually just picked up an extender today, I bought a used prowler 13 yesterday. My first yak. I have a 2016 Tacoma so short bed problems. But I'm looking forward to all the shallow fishing here around Wilmington NC.
Winner of a video, I been tryin to find out about "x4 labs instructional video" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Zansabella Zondalyn Scheme - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now )? Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my m8 got cool success with it.
To support the weight on the bar and distribute it over a larger area, I countersunk two lag bolts through a piece of 2x8. sealed the top of the bolts with caulking and then painted it all black.
This is a good option for those taking their yaks to Destin or some other areas that don’t allow you to have a trailer when renting a place for a week or more
I used a long roll of four inch wide by 3/4 thick foam that I found on the side of the interstate, to wrap my extender, and covered it with black duct tape. Been rolling for a year and a half with that setup. I might need to do it over by next year.
Just ordered truck extender. Thanks for the heads up on the denting of kayak. I think I'll try putting one of those pool noodles on the rail by cutting it in half and then duct taping it to it.
Hacks. Just put the two poles on side with noodles, and cover the cross bar with a noodle. I cover the bed in cardboard with grooves. It’s perfect. Just learn to secure your stuff. 3 tie downs that’s all you need. 13.5 foot on ram 1500 crew cab. Also, paint your crap. I’m thinking about dipping mine.
We use a large pool noodle split and zip tied to the horizontal bar. Mine has been on for several seasons. We probably don't use our boats as much as you do. Noodles are pretty cheap though. We also load our kayaks side by side; they fit between the wheel wells on my Tundra. The reflectors/lights are a good idea.
Salt water and sand is hard on any painted metal . So once a year a little sand paper and a spray can of rustolem will work for as long as you want to use the T bar
Try putting a pool noodle on your extender. You cut the pool noodle to length , then cut it open bottom only. You do this to wrap the noodle around the extender.
only draw back is taking up bed space. having to take them in and out takes about two minutes. You could put carpet on the crossbar... or even add a wider board to it with a couple u bolts and carpet to prevent the bump on the bottom of the kayak
Yep got rid of my bed extender because I was tired of removing it every time I unloaded my kayak. Maybe if I could trust people not stealing it here in panama city it would not have been an issue.
I bought a 12 foot Talon Eagle while in Florida and brought it back to Michigan. I stopped for 2 days at a friends house in North Georgia, and I left the kayak on the truck extender the whole time without a dent to the kayak. Before loading, I went to Bass Pro Shop and bought a large pool noodle. I cut it to the length I needed, then split it lengthwise. I placed it on the top rail of the rack, and trimmed around the upright support so it fit perfect. Then loaded my yak. It worked perfectly. I hope this helps.
2:43 I will never understand tailgating. It makes me so frustrated that people make the conscious decision to tailgate even if it means getting to their destination a mere few seconds faster. Even worse when it’s out of anger.
Mine works great! But its not the cheap one you got, has adjustable sides and length as well and holds them very tight with on one strap. The taper of the kayak holds it in by itself.Get what you pay for.
Maybe try bending the metal heat it up bang it and put some type of rubber on the bend to help the kayak I have one of these and it helped with the bending on my kayak😅😬
Hi there me again....."Got me now............😂" unfortunately Illegal in Qld. Oz, cannot have any overhang exceeding a metre from the vehicle or trailer. And now I know what that RED shark lure is behind ya kayak. 😂😂
When you had your extender on and had your fishing rods laying in your truck bed how did you secure them down? Or did you just lay them in there and they werent going anywhere?
The real pain is dragging the extender through the dirt when off roading. Really an issue if backing up into an incline. Boonedox Tbone make a curved extender to help alleviate this.
just put some spray on bedliner on it after sanding or wirebrishig off the rust and priming, then it will last forever, if buying it new just put some spray on liner on it right away.
For parking find an outside spot and back in to the spot so your rear end hangs over, your tires are still in the parking spot and you are not interfering with other people parking, plus no one will hit your stuff.
Owned 2 Ocean Kayaks and they will dent easily in the sun.. Pool noodles sound good, or glue indoor outdoor carpeting to a 2x4 then bolt it to the top of the extender. Nice video!
I wonder what the difference is between the one from Harbor Freight vrs the ones that Cabella's or Bass Pro sell?? Is cheap really worth it in the long run?? But still a good review and thanks for the info..
Thanks for the video. I've been thinking about getting a kayak, and wondering how to carry it w/ my F150 short bed. Thinking about roof racks and a rear loader (like the Rhino Racks system), or maybe just going the extender route (especially for local carry), and trying to decide what would be best for dealing with a ~100lb boat (looking at Pro Angler or Predator). Loading and unloading and having a secure load are important, but you bring up a good point about dealing with parking lots as well. As for the extender, I saw one guy just zip-tied a pool noddle to the cross bar as some padding, Get a nice bright color and it should work pretty well. If I was stacking kayaks like you have, I would also use pool noddles as pads between the yaks, and it should help with your dents. (Edit) - Ok, didn't read the other posts before making the pool noddle comments...
Hey CPT, what do you think of these Amazon or other well rated brands vs. the Boondox T-Bone? Is the T-Bone really worth the extra $100????? I am looking at a highly rated model on Amazon for $59 just not sure if it is noisy or rickety worse than the T-Bone.
How do you guys protect the bottom of the boat inside the truck bed? My kayak is fiberglass and I’m really worried about scratching up the hull. I have jHooks on the roof right now, but it’s too damned tall and very difficult to get on and off by myself, even with a step ladder.
I would not recommend anyone using those cable bike locks. They are the easiest locks to unlock in less than 30 seconds without knowing the combination.
Could you stack another kayak on the 2 you already have loaded? I’m trying to figure out the best set up to transport 3 Ascend kayaks with either my short bed Tacoma or a combination with my Pilot. It would be to 10 footers and 1 12 foot kayak. Thank you. Great video.
Love you video s. I'm an old fart getting ready to buy my first Yak. probably be a PA 12. But as you know is heavy. No oceans just rivers and lakes. Just bought new Honda Ridgeline so getting all ducks in row on how to haul. Can't afford trailer and no where to store it. Doing research on PFD, and other accessories. Any ideas on Fish finders? How did you learn how to edit on Go Pro? When I learn you might see some on You Tube. Mr Wonderful Wonders. There are already some on then called Mr Wonderfuls Rants.
Awesome! I think I did a video somewhere on my fish finder and PFD. Glad to hear your getting in the sport! All my gear is on my website so can see everything with links to each product. Tight lines!
I had carpet scraps that I zip tied over the bar for protection and magnetic tail lights from harbor freight also zip tied just in case the magnet failed.
Thanks for the video. Do you think a GMC Sierra with an 8 foot bed can handle two kayaks that are 13 feet and 10 feet? Or do I need some kind of extender still? Thanks!
No license plates. No storing a trailer. No separate tires to worry about maintaining. No wiring connections to worry about. Still half the overall length than with a trailer. Use a piece of 4" PVC for the extender. Creates a smooth surface to ride on.
I added a 4" keel roller to the extender lifting the kayak up off the rail.
I use a large pool noodle on my truck bed extender ! It really helps. No dents at all even in really hot weather
I cut a pool noodle down one side and slip it over the horizontal part of bed extender and zip tie it. It provides protection to the kayak.
$2. POOL NOODLES....ZIP TIES
Great information video as usual.
Thanks for sharing.
one of the best things to add on the bed extender is to go to your local fire department and see if they have any old fire hoses. the work great for cushioning and protection. Also can use the pool noodles which are cheap cheap cheap
HorseshoeButt Kayak Fishing how did you wrap the firehouse on the extender?
I have had a Harbor Freight truck bed extender since 2010 still going strong. I glued carpet to the bar and and added tail lights.
I realize you've got a trailer now, but I'm surprised you don't have a jumbo pool noodle split and zip tied to the top of the extender. Seems like it would solve the paint and hard edge problem.
It didnt work very well. It kept wearing off.
Yak Motley gotcha. I actually just picked up an extender today, I bought a used prowler 13 yesterday. My first yak. I have a 2016 Tacoma so short bed problems. But I'm looking forward to all the shallow fishing here around Wilmington NC.
Put a piece of PVC over the tailgate extender. Rolls right on and off.
Instead of zip tie, wrap the entire noodle to the bar with pipe wrap tape. I used 20mil 2 years ago and it's still holding up.
Winner of a video, I been tryin to find out about "x4 labs instructional video" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Zansabella Zondalyn Scheme - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now )?
Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my m8 got cool success with it.
get the magnetic lights from harbor freight, plug them in and stick them on the steel.
I started out with the magnetic mounts and ended up bolting them to the bar.

Thanks for the great information. I’m debating getting an extender myself.
Just ordered truck extender. Thanks for the heads up on the denting of kayak. I think I'll try putting one of those pool noodles on the rail by cutting it in half and then duct taping it to it.
i wrapped mine with some rope from homedepot. tied it off on both ends. saves the underside of the boat and is good padding
Good idea!
Pool noodle for the cross bar on the extender. Works great.
I too have the vertical arms on the ends that adjust. I put running lights, break lights and turn signal lights on it with the wiring being internal.
Pool noodle zip tied to the crossbar will solve that contact point issue. Thanks for this vid. I love my bed extender!
Bud - this is one of the Best vlogs I've seen !!! Like someone else said . Pool noodles- carved to a vee
Thanks! My Pool noodles kept wearing out. Just gave up on them.
Slice a foam pool noodle down the middle and slip it over that metal bar to protect the bottom of the kayak.
For the top of my extender i cut an old thick rubber garden hose. And mounted the hose to the crossbar with some sheet metal screws
Crazy how that same truck bed extender is now $70 at harbor freight (2022)
Salt water and sand is hard on any painted metal . So once a year a little sand paper and a spray can of rustolem will work for as long as you want to use the T bar
Try putting a pool noodle on your extender. You cut the pool noodle to length , then cut it open bottom only. You do this to wrap the noodle around the extender.

I wrap my truck extender with pipe insulation it is only a couple of dollars and works great!
Yep got rid of my bed extender because I was tired of removing it every time I unloaded my kayak. Maybe if I could trust people not stealing it here in panama city it would not have been an issue.
lol Ive seen a few go missing lol.
TrentSteegeFishing use a locking pin!
So what did you switch to?
Best intro of all kayak youtubers
For the contact point I would recommend some large diameter pipe insulation or cutting a pool noodle to fit and a few zip ties.
Do you ever run the kayaks side by side instead of on top of the other?
I use the same extender for my Old Town Predator PDL. Kayak is 120 lbs. To heavy to hoist to top of my 4Runner. It hangs out the back.
Just use a section of 1x12 lumber to bridge the gap between the extender and tailgate.
Cover the extender with pool noodles. Simple solution to the dent and scratching of the extender.
I bought a 12 foot Talon Eagle while in Florida and brought it back to Michigan. I stopped for 2 days at a friends house in North Georgia, and I left the kayak on the truck extender the whole time without a dent to the kayak. Very helpful indeed😊
Mine works great! But its not the cheap one you got, has adjustable sides and length as well and holds them very tight with on one strap. The taper of the kayak holds it in by itself.Get what you pay for.
Do you have a link for the extender you got?
Maybe try bending the metal heat it up bang it and put some type of rubber on the bend to help the kayak I have one of these and it helped with the bending on my kayak😅😬
You could probably zip tie a pool noodle to cushion the kayak from the metal bar.
I would use a thick pool noodle to prevent the hull flex just electric tape it down and can leave it there all the time
Screw a flat 2x10 to the top to prevent denting
how about a couple 10 ft 2X4's in the truck bed, they would work like the bunks on a trailer
Hi there me again....."Got me now............😂" unfortunately Illegal in Qld. Oz, cannot have any overhang exceeding a metre from the vehicle or trailer. And now I know what that RED shark lure is behind ya kayak. 😂😂
Great comment ! This goes right up there with "Yum yum yellow for wet suits. Good Vlog and one thing I've def. learned is that pool noodles wear out.
A water noodle wrapped around the extender would give some good cusion
Best fishing youtube intro!
Use pool noodles to wrap around your extender works awesome
I’m going to buy mine at harbor freight. And weld support brackets
Use a pool noodle on that bar to prevent dents
When you had your extender on and had your fishing rods laying in your truck bed how did you secure them down? Or did you just lay them in there and they werent going anywhere?
I appreciate the information and even more the fact that you don't swear a lot. Keep up the good work!
I bought a used boat trailer for 250$
I can carry 4 kayaks no problem
My tandems are 16 ‘ long and weights 60-100 lbs
The extenders are great ideas, except when the people leave them on and they're sticking out into the parking lot.
Like most inventions in life: "a great idea, but...."
Why are you here!!! Your only supposed to be on my cooking feed!!!😂😂 Love your videos!
The real pain is dragging the extender through the dirt when off roading. Really an issue if backing up into an incline. Boonedox Tbone make a curved extender to help alleviate this.
Really like your channel ... keep up the great work!
Badz To The Bone Fishing/Jax. Fl.
Your thoughts on 2 old Town peddle yaks stacked only for trans port. No 24 hour stays. Thank you
Using a Boonedox T-bone bed extender on a 4 door Tacoma w/short bed.
just put some spray on bedliner on it after sanding or wirebrishig off the rust and priming, then it will last forever, if buying it new just put some spray on liner on it right away.
For parking find an outside spot and back in to the spot so your rear end hangs over, your tires are still in the parking spot and you are not interfering with other people parking, plus no one will hit your stuff.
Repaint the extender then glue a pool noodle to the top side of the extender.
How about a small piece of plywood ( 2' x 4' ) under the kayak to stop the dent.
Owned 2 Ocean Kayaks and they will dent easily in the sun.. Pool noodles sound good, or glue indoor outdoor carpeting to a 2x4 then bolt it to the top of the extender.
Nice video!
Try using seatbelt covers on the bars.
use pipe foam insulation for cushion
You could put a pool noodle with some quick ties on that extender.
Sneak up and get cha! lol Right!
Good video I do have a big bent in my I need to get sun and live out
Pool noodle on bar and ratchet, no problems.
What happened to the pool noodle on the crossbar? And can you clarify why it’s only good for a season or two? Thanks for sharing!
Hey Capt, Who put the "dent" in the Chevy Truck ?
put a glide saddle on the truck bed extender.
Just give it a coat of rust converter once per year and you’re good to go.
Work smarter not harder. Spend the money on a Boonedox hitch extender. Half the weight and you can put 2 yaks side by side.
Can always cut a pool noodle in half and secure it to the bar with zipties
good lord you're making me fall asleep.
I wonder what the difference is between the one from Harbor Freight vrs the ones that Cabella's or Bass Pro sell?? Is cheap really worth it in the long run?? But still a good review and thanks for the info..
My biggest worry is damage to my tailgate when going down the road. What are you experiences with this? I have big mud grip tires as well.
Thanks for the video. I've been thinking about getting a kayak, and wondering how to carry it w/ my F150 short bed. roof rack for one and the other two as shown
What happened to the pool noodles
Love you video s. I'm an old fart getting ready to buy my first Yak. probably be a PA 12. But as you know is heavy. No oceans just rivers and lakes. I have ladder racks.
Will a pool noodle suffice on the bar to prevent damage to the yak?
Yes, I cut a pool noodle and split it, then tie wrapped it to the horizontal bar. Works great.
I had carpet scraps that I zip tied over the bar for protection and magnetic tail lights from harbor freight also zip tied just in case the magnet failed.
OMG!!!! Your killing me dude...
You bought it at Harbor Freight? I would be worried too! lol
JASON VOORHEES maybe.. but I could definitely get over on a tub of shit like you.
What do you think the best way would be to transport 2 hobie outbacks in a truck without at trailer?
Roof rack or bed extender
I have a pool noodle on mine it works
If i have the tacoma 5ft bed can I haul a 12ft kayak without a extender???? Pls help
Physics says no
Thanks for the video. Do you think a GMC Sierra with an 8 foot bed can handle two kayaks that are 13 feet and 10 feet? Or do I need some kind of extender still? Thanks!
I would say it would be find
Stay away from them scupper holes!!!
State of Florida requires red flag during the day and at night they require lights.
Oh the drama give me a break
