Diana Dors, I mean come on you don't get much more glamorous than her. She always looks a million dollars, even towards the end of her life she outshone those around her, a proper star she was, a nice lady too ❤️❤️❤️
We had the same cooker, Parkinson Cowen Prince one. Bought in 1969 and was still going strong in 2011 when i sold the old family home. When Britain could make stuff that lasted. And it still looked like new.
You're lucky. I had a cooker from even earlier mid Sixties still going strong. Then a gas man came to install new energy meters. Took one look at my cooker and said by law he will have to cut it off. He said my cooker is a fire and safety hazard. I told him it's been in my family for over 50 years with no problems. He said it doesn't matter and disconnected all connecting pipes.
When built in 1938, the Quarry Hill flats were very desirable modern living. They were inspired by the The Karl Marx-Hof flats in Vienna. The development was noted for its radical and modern features included; solid fuel ranges, electric lighting, a state-of-the-art refuse disposal system and communal facilities. By the time this program was made in the early 1970's, the flats had become very grubby and looked the worse for wear. They were demolished in 1978. Most of the buildings in the first panorama shot have long since gone. The old bus station, and the old stalls in the outside market area e.t.c.
Lived there in the 70s, but I was a baby so don’t remember it. Not there long but my mum said it was awful. Only watching to see the Leeds I grew up in
The opening scenes are now the Leeds Playhouse around the corner from my canal boat at Leeds Dock. I miss those days and the people who were alive then.
Theres an interview of her with Larry Grayson. She was so charming, intelligent and humourous. Larry Grayson too seemed to be enjoying her humour. So lovely
Although the location was unspecified on screen, parts of the series were filmed in Quarry Hill, Leeds. The council flats, where it was filmed have since been demolished.
Yes most hoses and flats had entrance halls - walking straight in to the living room really only started being a thing here when they started building those really tiny one bedroom housing estate houses in the 80s/90s

Kudos, k_ow, for this splendid upload. Not only Diana Doors dominates the proceedings from the moment she appears with her charisma and perfect timing but the supporting cast is excellent with names who would become famous years later, such as the nemesis who wants to evict them (she'd later play Ivy Tilsley in Coronation Street where the actor who played Alf already had an important role). And the actress who played Nora in Last of the Summer Wine. The scenes filmed outside in the streets show exceptionally good camera work for any sitcom from the 70's. Pity that series one coincided with the television cameramen strike which forced all the other S01 episodes to be filmed and videotaped in black and white. A treasure nevertheless, very funny in many places, thank you.
+Secretmermaid Girl Hello darling! We're a camp pair of old things aren't we!!! I just found some wonderful sketches from Granada's 'Wood and Walters' on here if you're interested in watching some vintage Victoria Wood - what a treat! Hope you're well my fellow Kitsch Queen, big hug. X
The times I hear her get pulled down and slagged off.... she's was a legend alive and in death! An absolute talent on two lovely legs, plus this series was and still is fabulous 👏👏👏👏👏❤❤❤❤❤
Another ITV show that must have looked desperately outdated on first showing. Setup and script straight out of 50s rep theatre, written with Peggy Mount in mind by the look of it.
So we have DD, lyn perry, the guy who was in porridge Lyn Perry's son out of kes and Percy's battleaxe in coro st. Not bad. Oh missed one Nora Batty. And finally Alf Roberts coro st.
Hard to believe though he was probably only just 33 when this was filmed, he looks nearer 50! He must have had a paper round uphill and into the wind when he was a boy.
A very young Alison Steadman I think she’s a brilliant actor. And Keith Chegwin. It took me a few minutes to get in it but it was good I hope there’s more if this ? Thank you
Thanks for this upload, a rare show! Unfortunately this breaks the cardinal rule of a comedy show, make it funny, people just want to laugh! I really appreciate the point of difference here, but I think this was/is just too challenging to watch, it actually reminds me of 'Bread', but not as well written not as well made & with less sympathetic characters. What a shame, another star vehicle failure for Dors, she deserved better. Amazing that it got passed series 1!!
@unclemort1960 He was jailed in 1970 along with the singer Leapy (Little Arrows) Lee for their part in a pub brawl in Sunningdale in July where the pub landlord got stabbed. Lake got 18 months (served 12) and Lee 3 years.
That Ivy Tilsley, Phyllis Pearce and Alf Roberts get around God bless 'em! Is anyone still alive who starred in this? Sad - but I suppose it was about 40 years ago!
k ow Just did a quick Google check and Tony Caunter and Barry Rutter are still with us. It was fab watching this I'm a big Diana Dors fan but Queenie's Castle was before my time so it was great to find it here - thanks so much for uploading!
+Bobby Tumbleweed Oh yes you are so right - Diana Dors is a total legend, there will never be another! Thanks for your update, fascinating. I think though perhaps you are not correct about Tony Caunter who as far as I know was in 'EastEnders' (as Pat's husband) not 'Coronation Street' - maybe ypu are thinking of the late, great Brian Mosley who played Alf Roberts and ran the corner shop? Thanks for posting!
+Bobby Tumbleweed Bless you! Thank God for UA-cam to see all these great vintage shows again. By the way, there are two fascinating documentaries about Diana Dors on here if you're interested - 'Who Got Diana Dors Millions' and an 'Arena' special called 'Blondes'. Well worth a look over Christmas when there's nothing but reality shows on the telly!
+glamdolly20 Yes I am still alive. I am Brian Marshall who played Bunny. I had a great time as a stand up comedian touring with Cliff ,Cilla Johnny Mathis etc and did loads of TV stuff. I eventually became an agent and scriptwriter and represented Wayne Sleep and Sheila Ferguson from the Three Degrees, I also devised Get Your Own Back which was a very successful kid's programme for the BBC. Also wrote the TV series for the Krankies and Keith Harris. I retired with neck Cancer but was clear for 8 years and then it came back but I am now clear again!! Cant keep a good man down! I now run and own a Care Agency with my wife and Director Gillian Marshall called Marshall Homecare limited. Its is very successful and my showbiz days seem like a completely different life. I had great fun making Queenies Castle and the cast and crew were a delight to work with. I have not had any contact with any of them once the series ended.

Smiths Sectric gingham wall clocks like the one in the kitchen still run today, too

(Sighs heavily...) That's progress, huh? 😕
Forgive me for asking, but why would it not have had gas or electric ranges?
Solid fuel seems a bit of a misstep with such a progressive building
Wow thanks for the insight
It Proves anyrhing Marx! Communist is worthless and totally unworkable.
Lived there in the 70s, but I was a baby so don’t remember it. Not there long but my mum said it was awful. Only watching to see the Leeds I grew up in
Watching this for the first time ever tonight!!!
2020 the year I discovered the very Beautiful and talented Diana Dors 💝💝💝💝
Lovely Diana Dors, what a lovely lady, beautiful in her late 30s early 40s what an actor, what a woman. She died way too soon.
Mike Hudson I remember when she had a house in sunningdale not far from where I live
@@jamie78lee78 lying bastard.
I just found this one and love it!! Classic British comedy all the way. Thanks so much for sharing this with us 👍
I heartily concur !
The opening scenes are now the Leeds Playhouse around the corner from my canal boat at Leeds Dock. I miss those days and the people who were alive then.
As the camera swings around you see the Headrow and the police station where the Yorkshire Ripper investigation was based. It's all changed.
@@willhay6148 That terrible market carpark and milgarth is now John Lewis in the Victoria gate shopping centre.
Ahh the old days.
Who cares about the plot or casting. It is Diana Dors. That's all you need.
"Just look at how they spelt the Count in Dracula!" - I guess that one flew under the radar in the 70s ! 🤣
Remember watching with my dear mother, oh we had some great comedies in them days
Freddie Fletcher and Lynne Perrie were in "KES" of course, as Judd and Mrs Casper, while Tony Caunter later played a DCI in "JULIET BRAVO"
Theres an interview of her with Larry Grayson. She was so charming, intelligent and humourous. Larry Grayson too seemed to be enjoying her humour. So lovely
She would have been a great character if she appeared in coronation street
I think more the Eastenders Queen viv Landlady
Not one of YTVs finest, but great views of Leeds and Quarry Hill. Brings back memories of the 70s
Every time I see films relating to Diana Dores it brings back memories of the past.
I've heard of this but never seen it so thanks I'm going to enjoy watching these later.
Who’s watching this in 2019 for the first time ever
Watching it in America just turned up in my recommendations I'm liking it pretty much
Me. Never heard of it and I grew up in the 1970's, maybe they didn't show this in my region, being in South Wales.
December 1st 19:14
@@tolfan4438 you need help bro im english i hate my country for thos truly awful tv and music shit oh wow this is truly the worst one yet.
Don't remember this, but I was working shifts from 1969 till 2002 so I missed a lot of TV.
I used to love this show. When I was 14. Set in lovely Leeds. Department of Heath Hq now occupies the site of the flats.
Diana does a national treasure
She was pure Class!
I certainly have a notion to second that emotion !
I saw Keith Waterhouse in the gents at the Old Vic a few years back. Told him how much I admired his column.
In the gents..🤣
Was his column quite big ?
When Leeds used to have a great city centre & market. It's horrendous now !!!
Although the location was unspecified on screen, parts of the series were filmed in Quarry Hill, Leeds. The council flats, where it was filmed have since been demolished.
Love the wobbly captions at the end. No expense spared on this one.
Haha. I noticed that as well. 😄😆
U can see where the concept of the series *BREAD* came from...
As an American I have to say it's quite nice that for an apartment as small as that they still managed to have an entrance hall.
Yes most hoses and flats had entrance halls - walking straight in to the living room really only started being a thing here when they started building those really tiny one bedroom housing estate houses in the 80s/90s

I often wondered whether Dick Emery based his character Mandy on Diana Dors.
Ivy Tilsley watering her flowers!

So basically, Carla Lane just nicked this, moved it to Liverpool and called it 'Bread'.

I'm exploring old UK sitcoms and tv series since I have watched all of the American ones.
Ahh I love this. Diana Dors was so beautiful, our answer to Marilyn Monroe.
Oh god no... Marilyn was pretty
With an answer like that you'd have to say you forgot the question.
Love this show
The customer in the bakery is a young Nora Battey from last of the summer wine.
Diana Dors, what a star! They don't make 'em like that anymore SIGH.

Have you seen her in Adam & The Ants video music video Prince Charming? She plays the Fairy Godmother, looking FABULOUS!
The casting is ridiculous. Diana Dors looks at most 5 to 10 years older than her sons. At first I thought they were meant to be her brothers!
WE ALL MISS Diana Dors xxx
They all sound like the voice overs from buggernation street
Nora batty, ivy tilsly, Alf from the corner shop.
I love Carla lanes *bread* (1985-1988 episodes).
You can see references taken from this series and used for the *Boswell family*

Diana dors in her prime cracking stuff xxx
Jill Summers (Phylis Pearce on Coro) as the woman complaining.
