Yes for me too. This double EP is much more touching than what they did next.

initial thought: odd pick. but yeah, i think i get it. like the the bigpig said, there's something touching about this set. maybe it's the mix of crudity & fragility? i dunno... it stands out in their catalog, distinct even from the other pre-master's bedroom stuff. can't say it's my #1 favorite, though. song for song, that'd be vol 3.

@@yelmtree with theiir bedroom stuff are you referring to the earlier ocs tapes?

@@liam-br9md Yeah, I meant the OCS stuff from 2004-05: some of Volume 2, all of Songs About D&D (v3) and Get Stoved (v4). Shivery wisp & hiss, much of it recorded by John Dwyer in his bedroom. In 2006, Ohsees came w/ the Grave Blox 2x7 and Cool Death of Island Raiders LP. Same style & vibe, but pro recorded & produced by Dave Sitek (Cool Death & the 1st 2 GB tracks). They're similar, so if you like one, you'd probably like the other.

Other Words I Wrote Because (tl/dr):
In the wake of 2007's transitional Sucks Blood, real-type rock band Thee Oh Sees took over. No more ghost warble.* I was a bit disappointed at the time, but the sacrifice made sense. After years of Bay Area punk shows & West Coast tours, Coachwhips and Pink & Brown (etc.) had gone on hiatus in 2003 while John took a breather. The original OCS recordings accumulated during & reflect the ensuing idyll. But big changes became inevitable when he began to focus more seriously on the project.
I say this because I saw a prototype of its full band incarnation play live in late 2005 or early 06. It was their first Seattle appearance, at Ballard's tiny Sunset Tavern. Billed as Ohsees in response to legal threats from Warner Brothers, they went off like a bomb. Big, sweaty, rock 'n' roll dance party. I talked to John & Brigid afterward. Both happy about the performance & response, both looking forward to the upcoming Sitek sessions. I was therefore surprised, half a year later, to hear in Cool Death no trace of the incandescent club destruction I'd witnessed live. What goes on?
My theory: when led by JP Dwyer, the voltage ritual tends to summon monsters (e.g. his entire career). This applies no matter what his other incantations might bring forth. So, when OCS morphed into a full-time band, kaiju invoked by their jams & gigs replaced the music's gentler spirits. The result, however, was not immediately apparent in their releases. It would become clear in 2008's flood of ear-razing Oh Sees product. But Cool Death, Grave Blox & Sucks Blood got caught in the lag.
      * 2008's Hounds of Foggy Notion did put a nice headstone on the folk era. Another personal favorite.

@@yelmtree im kinda fucked at the time of responding, but i think i get what youre saying. like, about the very descript eras of dwyers music. i really havent delved into anything he has done in the last decade, at least not much. but from what i have heard it is mostly fast paced, sweaty, gnarly, punk shit. which from others i like, but for some reason not from dwyer. i was first introduced to him from vol. 3 and 4, and fell in love with that sound. so maybe hearing how much his style has changed has deterred me from enjoyment of his releases past foggy notion. still have a lot of respect for the sheer magnitude of creativity he has.
from what you know of dwyer, i assume you know about zeigenbock kopf?
