Please note that the flickering of the LEDs is due to the high speed frame rate of the camera. This is not perceivable with the naked eye.
0:00 Introduction
0:57 Shoegazey overdrive with reverb and warble from Ribbons
A simple warbly reverb patch on Ribbons into Sparks drive. The drive breaks up the diffuse harmonics of the reverb, turning it into a rich disintegrating wall of sound while still preserving the stereo image. We mixed in a bit of clean signal with the blend knob to add clarity and dynamics to the chords.
1:31 Stereo harmonic tremolo into Ribbons looper
The LFO is mapped to the filter cutoff and the SPIN control is slowly sweeping the filter across the stereo field. This is running into the stereo four-track looper on Ribbons to create a sparkling ambient soundscape.
2:28 Simple overdrive
Just drive with some subtle gate.
3:04 SID chip synth ambient patch
In this track we’re using our capacitive touch MIDI keyboard prototype to play the Sparks synth, with some reverb from Ribbons.
3:35 Stereo harmonic tremolo
The LFO is mapped to the filter mode to sweep between high-pass, band-pass, and low-pass for a lush harmonic tremolo effect. The ENV is also mapped to the LFO rate so that every time the guitar is picked harder, it briefly increases the rate of the LFO.
4:05 Dynamic audio rate amplitude modulation
The LFO is mapped to the output level to get a ring mod-like amplitude modulation effect. The ENV is also mapped to the LFO rate so that changes in dynamics slightly modulate the pitch of the LFO.
4:31 High gain wavefolding with choppy gate
The wavefolder and gain turned up to 11 with a little gate for a choppy sputtering effect.
5:14 Chiptune track made entirely with sounds from Sparks
In this track we’re using our capacitive touch MIDI keyboard prototype to play the SID chip synth in Sparks. For the melody line we used the pulse waveform and modulated the pulse width using the LFO. We did a couple other passes, including drum sounds using the LFSR noise waveform and a gliding bass line. For all of them the bit-depth is set low (2-8 bits) to get a really crunchy lo-fi sound.
5:45 Overdriven 808 and 303-ish acid patch
The Sparks on the left is overdriving the 808 with a bit of gate. The Sparks on the right is generating the acid-y melody line using the SID chip synth. For the synth we added some glide, cranked the drive and resonance, and used the ENV to modulate the filter cutoff which gives it a squelchy 303-like character.

Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
You had my attention as soon as you said "wavefolder". There are not nearly enough wavefolder pedals in the world. It is a really interesting effect and desperately under-explored.
I still can't get over the fact this is so many pedals at once... AND A FULL SYNTH.
The examples that have the Ribbons make it hard to know what is doing what
We explain how we made each track in the video description. :)
Im just saying it would’ve been nice to turn one on then the other so you could hear each’s contribution to the resulting sound. But i guess you just writing it works 🤷♂️
If you can't showcase it on its own at this stage, turn off time.
Agreed. Even when explained, the audio demo isn’t clear when hearing both pedals combined
I can hear it fine, but I've been an audio engineer since the 1900s 😂

exactly what I thought

>Stereo Distortion with a Blend Control and MIDI
Well, guess I'm buying this.
Both the Sparks and the Ribbons look great! Hope to get my hands on both some day.
Your pedals intrigue me but at the same time confuse me because I'm dumb
Love how you did both guitar and synth/drum machine demos with these, and love that you used Rogan knobs - I've been saying these are the best for years. Great pedal designs!
this is an excellent idea for a pedal, awesome mix of quality conventional function and next level creative control. haven't come across a pedal that made me really want to check it out in a while, cool!
You have somehow managed to create a pedal that is a solution for at least 3 to 42 of my musical and non-musical desires/problems 🫶🏼
The sound at 4:04 is just amazing.
Never heard ring modulation used to such great effect.
@@bcmhayesthat is some remarkably musical ring mod.
More ribbns please i’m not gonna pay $800 for one on Reverb lol. The world needs more please.
They’re on the way! Make a forum account if you want to be notified when the next batch is available.
I love a unique multi-tool w/ a voice of its own (literally)!
Super! I found this by searching what stereo pedal retains stereo image in bypass. I didn't expect such a wild filtery pedal. Subscribed.
Great work, very creative.
Looks super cool.
stephen likey!!
yip-yip yay-yaaaay!!
Hell yeah love the Deerhoof, it would be interesting to see what Ed Rodriguez could cook up with this
Ed was not in Deerfhoof for the Runners Four album. That’s John Dieterich.
Very very very neat 😊
You had me at "sync to midi clock"
Flippin' lovely and I want one.
0:57 My Boards Of Bloody Valentine 🤩
This thing is basically how they advertised Fakeblock in Arrested development
I wanna hear that internal synth!! wait!! holy crap!! that's it at 5:15 I love it!! update: ALL of the synths in this vid are the SID chip!! sweet baby jesus!!
The “This American Life” of pedals
CONGRATS ♥♥♥
Amazing!
Oof. That’s bloomin’ lovely
Please do a more in depth how-to video. Kind of hard to tell what the pedal is doing vs what the source audio is doing on this vid
We will! Should be out in the next couple weeks. 🙂
Sweet, sounds kinda like an analog version of the Ultrawave
I want to see how it is controlled with those knobs and fucntions. :)
Wow what a great effect unit!😮
Do you have delays too?
man thats insane!!!!!!!!!
Definitely getting into synth territory here.
Will Ribbons be available again???
Yep! We’ll keep making them.
@@kinotone RIBBONS! RIBBONS! WE NEED RIBBONS! )))
@@kinotone cool, can't wait
Music has the Right to Children. Children playing Deerhoof riffs.
Lovely sounds. I don’t play guitar but I haven’t heard a pedal before that sounds quite like this one
I was thinking something similar. this is a bit more guitar-centric than what I'm usually interested in. but I'm REALLY interested in this one!!
Finally an interesting pedal, and you aren't playing generic blues rock licks.
you ever seen knobs' channel...?!?
Yesssss
How does Sparks create harmonic tremolo? Is that a combination of other built in effects or an actual setting you can select? And does Sparks do classic amplitude tremolo as well?
To get a harmonic tremolo on Sparks you map the LFO to the filter mode. This will modulate the filter between high pass, band pass, and low pass.
To get a normal tremolo, you map the LFO to the LEVEL control.
The LFO has different waveforms so you can do smooth tremolo, hard chop, or other interesting shapes.
Awesome, thanks for the response! This is such a cool combination of end of chain or even all-in-one effects. 😃
@@kinotoneI love that y'all reply like you do. glob bless you, kinotone!! & the horse you rode in on!!
SID chip? like C64?
yarr!! 🎉
🤘👏👏👏
Love the gnarly guitar sounds, but - who can tell what the pedal does on its own..
BTW, what’s the guitar? Sounds like a Jaguar.
Thanks for the feedback! We’ll work on putting together some more clips of it on its own. 🙂
The guitar used for this clip was a telecaster with humbucker neck and single coil bridge.
Is the distortion digital? Is it modeled after any overdrive in particular?
The audio path is 100% analog. :) It isn't modeled after any particular drive but it captures the tonal spirit of some of my favorites. It uses zener diodes in a soft clipping configuration and this can be crossfaded with a gnarly west coast-style wavefolder using the Drive/Fold knob.
@@kinotone rad as as hell. I dont think there are many stereo overdrives with midi and a blend knob. I'm for sure gonna be saving up for this one.
@@kinotoneglob, I love this answer!!
Eh eh when the eurorack module? 😂
Is that your riff at 2:28?
It's called 'wrong time capsule' by deerhoof
What is this keyboard (buchla style)?
It’s a capacitive touch keyboard prototype from us. In this video it’s just being used as a MIDI keyboard but it will have many other features. You can join our forum if you’d like to be the first to know about it!
It's it an MPE style keyboard? That would be fun with the Spark.
Can you simultaneously play the Osc and route audio through it. That could be some glitchy fun with something like a Jamstick.
@@jquanmusic yes on Sparks you can run audio through the input while simultaneously using the synth 🙂
@@kinotonewow!! very excited about this!!
Ah, these knobs remind me of MI…
$400
Thanks! At first I was like 😮 but then I remembered the frickin 4 voice polysynth onboard and the fact that this pedal could be my new favorite tremolo, on top of the filters (including envelope filter) wavefolding and of course many flavors of dirt. That's a lot of value in a compact package!
1:15 great :) Ulrich Schnauss vibes :)
Don’t know what is doing what. Very poor demo.
check the description. there's a very clear & thorough breakdown at each timestamp.
Potentials there.but stop making a synthesizer from a guitar...
It's a pedal that passes and effects audio. You can plug anything into it.
NO!! don't stop!!
