Hi Alan, just found your channel. An idiot's guide to building pocketship! I've flirted with the idea myself after thinking about dinghy cruising, but I'm more of a "glamper" and like the comforts of a cabin.
Couple of questions: can you epoxy resin over varnish? Or just wood stain? Also, have you considered doing a commentary video in which you describe why you chose pocketship compared to other options? It's always interesting to hear how people finally chose their build.

Hi Luke, Thanks for your comment and questions. Firstly, about the epoxy over varnish. I never tried this but understand that epoxy works best when it has a chemical bond (epoxy on epoxy while the first coat is still 'tacky') or second best physical bond produced by sanding the first coat with fine sandpaper before applying the second coat. Personally I would prefer to sand back to bare wood before applying epoxy as this works well as a base coat, with topcoats of varnish which is UV resistant, unlike the epoxy. I really like your idea about the commentary video and will try to produce this in the near future! Thanks again and good luck with your future boat building adventure 🙂

No point, really.
Epoxy breaks down in sunlight whereas varnish has UV inhibitors which protect underlying epoxy.

You should get yourself a set of vix bits they make installing things like your vents and fairleads so much easier
