It really is a miracle that this movie exists. The franchise had laid dormant for three decades while George Miller moved on to mostly family movies like Babe and Happy Feet, but then at age 70 he went back to the franchise he first made his name in, and delivered one of the greatest action films ever made, perfectly bridging the gap between high and low art with pure visual storytelling, ending up with six Oscars (the most of any film that year). In the years since he's talked about doing more films like a prequel about Furiosa's youth, but I honestly have no idea how you top this.

I think one of the best things about this movie, aside from just the general creativity of the action scenes and the cinematography, is how it doesn't go out of its way to spell everything out for you, it respects its audience and trusts that we aren't completely brain dead and let's us piece together for ourselves how this setting works. From why those particular "breeders" are so important to immortan Joe because they are all without mutations or imperfections and therefore best positioned to provide him with a "perfect" heir free of mutation, or the Warboys all basically having cancerous tumors and are all on a ticking clock and have to have blood transfusions off captives (such as max at the beginning) just so they can live long enough to go out in a blaze of glory and gain entry to valhalla with the whole "witness me" stuff.
None of it is spelt out for you, but the information is there if you pay attention, but can also work and still be fun if you don't. Not alot of films dare to take this route and it gets my respect for that alone.

When the Doof Warrior appeared with the flaming guitar, one niece -- who had never seen any Mad Max movie, before, and had *no idea* what to expect -- turned to me and whispered, "Is that really necessary?"
I replied, "No, but it's cool!"

The win for best film editing was well deserved, this is absolutely the best edited action film of all time. With all the crazy action, you can imagine in a less talented film maker's hands it would be very hard to follow what the devil was going on, but with all the crazy action it was so well crafted that it all flowed and was easy to follow, not an east trick.

Movie is clearly a masterpiece, so many amazing stories like the guy who was doing security for the production who I believe is ex-SAS getting somewhat of a starring role, the crazy things that went on in production etc, but the real star of the show here is the stunts and the off-the-scale production values. It's kinda reassuring to know you can make a movie like this with barely any CGI, some great stunt people and a love for the art. The behind the scenes stuff for this movie (scattered around youtube) is well worth watching if you have the time. Can't wait for the next Mad Max movie.

It's a common misconception that there's barely any CGI in this movie. In fact - there's plenty. Like.. in every single shot there's something. While sure they did actually build those vehicles and drove and crashed them but the sky, the ground, the spinning wheels - all CG. Same goes for the surroundings that were composited in, even Max's right ear is CG because Tom Hardy was wearing an ear piece when they were filming. Not to mention removed wires, tyre tracks, cloned cars in the background, there's TONS of CG in this film.

Interestingly, George Miller had desired to make the film as a "continuous chase" with very little dialogue and the visuals come first; so basically "a silent movie with sound", something he had also envisioned for the orig. _Mad Max_ in 1979, and took even further influence in _MM2: TRW_ - wanting that film to be understood in Japan without the use of subtitles. And also, even if you just watch this film with the volume sound on mute, it's very likely you could still understand what's going on in the film through its visual plot. *;D*

    3. The Chrome Spray Paint is what they believe they must do before they sacrifice themselves to enter Valhalla - paint their teeth chrome like the grille of a car.
    4. The hand gestures the War Boys make is the sign of the V8 - for V8 engine. They literally worship cars and engines.
    5. The deformed people are messed up from radiation from nuclear war.
    6. The Doof Warrior (guitarist) and the drummers are basically the equivalent of war drummers, who would play certain beats that the army would recognize as different battle commands. One beat would be "charge", the next would be "hold", etc. in a world gone insane, makes sense that you'd include an electric guitar.
    7. The overuse of fire and fuel and excessive wastefulness is commentary that everybody in charge in this apocalypse isn't actually interested in restoring the world, they are claiming the riches for themselves. That's why Immortan Joe drives not one, but TWO 1959 Cadillacs mounted together atop a monster truck chassis.
