The Landis+Gyr smart meter used by PG&E has 2 dashed lines at the bottom of the read-out which move across the screen. There are digital representations of the spinning wheel of the old meters which a person could see speeding up or slowing down according to usage.

Why doesn't the meter tell us our instantaneous usage in kW?

Because they are going to sell you a device you can pay for to find out that information at a later date. Why give you information you deserve and should know for free when they figured out a way to make you pay for that information? See 5:28

3.6 x one pulse of the electronic emulator or one disk revolution divided by the number of seconds it takes to go from one pulse emulated to the next......take that value and divide it by 3600 (seconds in an hour) to get kwh

False. Not the way my digital Vectren meter works. When I phoned in for a technician to come out check it or I was flat out denied. The closest thing I got to an explanation was continue to compare to last year's usage.
    How's that for customer service?
    Bird is the word.
