Still one of my favorite movies. I never understood why Kurt Russel didn't get more recognition for his role. He said "nothing" but at the same time "everything".
This movie takes place in the same universe as blade runner-predator-aliens, so they may have been replaced with Nexus.
Uh huh
Absolutely, I might have just been bad timing on the release. Love this movie, when I bring it up, not many remember it.
Being a big fan of Escape from New York and Big Trouble in China town. I'll have to watch this one for real :)
just like DoomSlayer
Ah, the good old 90's action movies, like universal soldier, fortress, screamers... Good memories!
I was born in 2001. But the 80s and 90s has some g.o.a.t movies
There was a repeat of this movie I think, starring Dolph Lundgren...
@@sofiacristinak.-cd1nk You're close. You're thinking Universal Soldier.
Similar names, different plots.
@@sofiacristinak.-cd1nkuniversal soldier has 5 movies if I remember correctly, all pretty good too, better than the starship troopers franchise, at least U.S. has storylines and not just shooting bugs!
Universal soldier had Jean-Claude Van Damme too correct?
The story about emotionless people finding their humanity is always heart warming.
It is the story of humanity!
This movie is dope, and is part of the Blade Runner universe. I'm glad more people are starting to appreciate this hidden gem.
I never heard that before, how is linked to Blade Runner?
@@brazensigilos8161 Anderson used some of the ships and vehicles from Blade Runner, and theres a few other little things here and there that link it. Anderson said he intended it to be in the same universe, and Scott didn't have a problem with it.
@@brazensigilos8161 Roy Batty in Blade Runner mentions some of the same battles that Todd is shown fighting in
on Arcadia, among piles of trash one or two spinners (flying cars from blade runner) could be seen...so they say.
@@jasonvero Cool! Thank you for that bit of trivia! 👍 I never knew these movies were supposed to be tied together!
As a soldier... Even if your young and fast, Experience would still play a big part in a mission..
There's a saying.. Respect an old man in a job where most die young..
(rough translation)
It's how it's shown. Can the "new model" beat the everloving out of it's precursor in a straight up fist fight because he's stronger and has better reflexes? As we saw, yes.
But that doesn't help with navigating a battlefield and a bullet doesn't care if you have a black belt in judo or how fast you can sprint. If your enemy can spot and take opportunities to attack faster than you, thats curtains unless he misses (in which experience also helps).
@@dalemcdenver7816 yeah but if you have been genetically engineered to the point that you are bulletproof I'm sure that would be a huge advantage. Imagine soldiers with skeletons made of alloys that are near indestructible like some real life wolverine shit.
@@joshuaortiz2031No matter how strong your skeletons are your brains are still as squishy as a jelatin.
@@neiabaraja8040 yeah but if they perfect stem cell tech they can just regrow the part of your brain that's damaged. If anything getting shot in the head will just incapacitate you and put you in a coma. Plus head shots are rare. Imagine genetically engineered soldiers that when they get shot their blood instantly coagulates when it comes into contact with the environment outside the body. Imagine men like that who never get tired, never get sick, are never incapacitated by pain, maybe they don't even need oxygen to survive because they discovered a way to store ATP (the molecule that powers our bodies in cellular respiration) in muscle tissue and when the blood oxygen level dips it's released into their body. That is all within the realm of possibility. Good luck taking on a platoon of guys like that with decades of Special forces level training. I was in the army and my lame ass was medically discharged for a shoulder injury I got in training, a ruck march. So pathetic. The military would love soldiers that can train nonstop and never acquire permanent injuries they lose so much money to having to discharge service members prematurely and pay them disability.
A story of a "Soldier" who became a Warrior. Thanks for the nostalgia.
Man you just cant beat a story like this. Family, loyality, sacrifice. ❤
lol "family" 😂 Dude cucks the other guys wife but "family" 😂 They also tossed him out of the village but "loyalty" 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@ICU1337 not surprised, western entertainment has been screwed since the whole code
Tedious, prosaic, done better elsewhere.
@@longiusaescius2537 lol
I agree. Kurt Russell is fantastic in this film and I’ve watched it several times. He saves the woman and her son, he tried to save the woman’s husband but wasn’t able to.
Two things:
When Todd decides to fight the soldiers,he is adked " what are you going to do?".
Todd replies " kill them all, sir".
When Todd and Cain fight at the end, Cain dies and Todd gently lays Cain's head and body down rather than just dropping him. Respect for your enemy soldier.
A really good movie.
Lots of little things only a soldier would know and appreciate.
Russell did his homework.
This was one of the few movies he actually had to act in, since he had so few lines and had to play a obsolete soldier suffering from too much PTSD, fighting against soulless killers. He managed to convey his humanity though an almost expressionless face and that was his real acting skill in action. Totally different from "Big Trouble in Little China."
My FAVORITE line is while Todd’s conducting weapons check, the now widow asks to help & Todd immediately says no. She asks why & Todd’s awesome response was “Because soldiers deserve soldiers”!
And also said : I will kill them all.
This guy proved that battle experience is all that really matters. Nothing is more real than the battlefield, I think the fighting on chains was a stupid test to begin with. Doesn’t get the heart racing & the mind twitching like stepping foot on land you know you may die on
Yeah that was an odd test.
Especially when three people fight a roided guy. If the three won, would their leader cheer and say, " I knew 3 of my guys were better than one of yours!"
Then he spikes a football and does a victory dance.
Ditto memory lane. For a simple tough guy plot this film with Kirk Russell provided a lot of feeling. Nothing like defending the vulnerable and a woman and kids to tame a savage heart.
Kurt Russell
Who's Kirk Russell? 😂😂😂
Had seen this movie a couple times and never thought it was anything special but watching this 10 minute recap elicited a surprising amount of emotion. Good job.
I watched this movie as a kid....now i am a father 🥲🥲
Time is fast mannn....its fast. But the memory is still fresh
Dud, I watched this movie as a young man. Now, I am a grandfather😂😂😂😂
Big up to all the dads and grandfather's. Love watching classics like this with my son.
If I can get him off tik tok that is.
i watched this movie as a kid and now im in your dad
I saw this movie in 4rth grade when a substitute teacher played it for the class and he got in trouble for it, we all liked him and the movie.
He probably was in trouble because the film does not have a GP rating. It is a really great film.
The physique Kurt Russell was able to build for this movie was very impressive for a man in his 40's.
He broke his ankle when the sign slide down in the filming of the movie.
Yes - - 🙂 he looks really great in this film. I’ve been a fan of his, since he made all those Disney films. I also love his TV movie, where he stars as Elvis.
@@assassinlexx1993 what does that have to do with what OP said?
Ah, good old, well-written, simple movies.
Well written? Seriously?
After a lifetime of super elite military training all they do in actual combat is to just awkwardly walk towards their enemies like Frankenstein's Monster, guns blazing.
Something tells me you could have had that level of tactical finesse and cunning without training them from childbirth on.
Also, after probably investing millions into each of those supposed super soldiers they just kill one because he wasn't particularly fit that day? Without checking whether he might have had a illness?
And that was the first day they actually tested the physical strength of their super soldiers and they didn't detect that that one was too weak sometimes during those 12 years or so they were training him at that point?
Is this story happening in the "Idiocracy" universe, where everyone is really, really dumb? I guess that would explain why the ability to walk and shoot at the same time makes you a super soldier in that world.
@@TrangleCPeople who speak like that are enthralled by nostalgia.
They failed to be smarter than their parents, so fall for the same intellectual traps and get caught. Forever.
And there's no changing them.
@@TrangleC that’s basically what the Spartans did. You showed weakness and you were dead. Even at birth. If you had a small defect you were thrown away. You had to be the best of the best. You weren’t allowed to have an “off day”. You have an “off day”. The man beside you could die. Better to get rid of the weak link in the chain now so it doesn’t fail in combat and get stronger better men killed.
@@edthomas6548 No, it is not. They did discard deformed babies after birth, but they did not kill older kids for showing weakness once. Where did you get that nonsense from?
It is also a bad comparison because they were not a modern government project that invests millions into raising super soldiers to then throw that investment away like that.
@@TrangleC I meant "comparatively", my friend. I know this movie is nothing but a "cool muscle guy saves the day" cliché where the guy is secretly badass and he saves everyone in the end with blazing guns and big explosions!!!
And the world building is not consistent and lacks of verisimilitude.
But this movie had the core elements. Main character had a bad background and flaws but in time, he overcomes them and makes a self-sacrifice decision to save the people whom saved him previously.
In comparison to today's "all powerful females!" or skinny males wearing metal costumes or special serums to be powerful; a guy who has been trained and brainwashed all of his life overcoming from this and his flaws and learn how to be a human is incredibly rare.
That's what i had meant with well-written "SIMPLE" movies.
The most underrated Kurt Russell movie of all time and my top five sci-fi flick. 10/10
I like when the boy sticks his hands out to be picked up, and Todd takes it as an order, and does it.
A killing machine learning humanity and fighting for theyre loved ones/friend's. I love this trope
"the I can fix him" trope
@@churro6160 In fairness the movie was really about him 'fixing' himself, mainly by incorporating the hardships of his past and using their lessons to do something brighter with his life.
Remember how movies WANTED people to be individuals and not soulless NPCs?
My kid's first question whenever I suggest we watch a movie or TV series is always, "What year was it made?" Anything after the mid-2000s is immediately met with a groan.
@@basedlindsey Smart friggin kid. Must have good parents. Make more.

The movie is:
"Soldier" (1998)
Soldier was and still is a damn good movie
Fun fact: the boy running holding the flag is Kurt Russell’s real son, Wyatt Russell/ The U.S Agent😎
He looked so much like his dad too. A tiny part of the film, but it stuck with me.

If he said 10000 words
Actually, he said: No, Sir. I was replaced by a better soldier.
1000 per word would make a million for 1000 words... I don't think he was paid a billion dollars for the movie
@@MrPremkumar666 well, what if he was?
Kurt broke his left ankle and the top of his right foot during this movie, but pushed himself to complete it. Although he is onscreen for 85% of the movie's runtime, Kurt Russell's character speaks only a total of 104 words.
oh my...it's been ages since i've seen this movie! great to watch a recap to see what it was all about...tyvm for making this one!
Reminds me of Master Chief's start in UNSC

Then they invested billions to create modified soldiers that supersede the humans.
And then the Japanese came and created a robot.

I have always loved this movie, since the first time I saw it about a year or so after it came out. Even though I was too young to understand all of it then, it stuck with me. It is a classic of the 90s brand of action films.
*[Soldier (1998) American film]* is a great example and film-making execution of, _"Less is more."_ *;)*
The laconic (speaking as little as possible) nature of the Soldiers, for both Todd-3465's (Kurt Russell) generation and Caine-607's (Jason Scott Lee) generation effectively delivers the near-inhuman nature of the Soldiers. And yet, the Soldiers still manage to convey the point(s)/meaning(s) of each scene to the Audience.
I enjoyed [Soldier (1998)] so much, I owned it on hard-copy on VHS, and currently own it on DVD; and if I ever see it for cheap on a bargain bin/shelf, I will upgrade to Blu-Ray. The point being, [Soldier (1998)] is a worthwhile film to watch, and own. *:)*

I was a teen back then and I found it lame and disappointing, just a lame (not well choreographed) slug fest on a sound-stagey looking junkjard.
Back then we had better movies of that kind, stuff like "Universal Soldier".
Little boy forgot his father real quick.
I don’t believe that he forgot him, it’s just that this ‘soldier’ entered his young life at a very crucial time.

Kurt has made some mighty fine movies in his day, and I've liked him since he was a kid in 'The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters".
What does it say about movies that I knew as soon as I saw the married woman, that they would kill the husband to get him out of the way for the main character to take his wife? 😂
It says art imitates life.
The message is that Husbands/Fathers, hinder women's empowerment and 'fulfillment'.
Men are only good for war and only the most violent ones are rewarded with affection.
Soon our world will look just like the one depicted in the movie.

I unexpectedly came across this movie channel surfing late at night as a young whoopersnayper and it was totally polarizing in a 90's sort of way. Good flick with a warm and cozy ending, I love this kind of movie!
