I don't quite know why...but this review feels nostalgic. It reminds me of the reviews from way back, like when Paul, Quinns, and Matt would (could) do reviews together. Maybe it's because they brought back some of the tracks from reviews back then. Or maybe because it's a game that they loved from then (I remember cockroach poker!). But this review just feels like...back then. And...I really like it... Nostalgies...
The art in this version of the game is great, but if you aren't able to easily get it or can't afford it, Cockroach poker can be played with 2 matching decks of playing cards. The animals become numbers 1-8 (or more theoretically) and the two decks give you 'suites' of 8 (4 from each). Still very fun!
Interestingly, Cocroach poker was the first game I owned. A relative gave it to me when I was 10. And I absolutely hated it for an entire decade and it sat in a cupboard for an eternity, until we sold it for pennies. And now I realize we played it wrong all those years and want it back... ARGH!
Just like Skull, we're loving this game for the amount of fun bluffing and interplay it contains in such a tiny box and ruleset. Lovely review as always.
I bought this game early in my interest in the hobby and thought it was terrible. I NOW see how naive and simplistic I was being in my play. Thank you Quinns! Please someone (SU&SD guys - it says we shouldn't submit if its not our own) submit this to the BGG video page so others can see.
Reminds me of when my brother taught me spades one time. It too, seemed like a luck-based timewaster until that spark of wit started clicking for me. Magic.
No. As a SPECIAL TREAT, here's the bit of script I forgot to record: "There’s a lot of laughter when you play Cockroach Poker, laughter at players being caught out in a lie, or at players saying a card is one thing, then thinking better of it, and saying it’s another thing. And when I first played it I assumed, like everyone, that lying is just funny. But there’s more this game than that, more of the ineffable psychology that secretly powers all board games. A player deciding your lie is too good and peeking at the card you passed them, that’s fun. Sharing secrets produces a giddy joy. Being the odd-one-out at the table at having to guess a card brings a nice sense of being in the spotlight. "And you know what else? A lot of that laughter comes from /tension/. Like Shut Up & Sit Down favourite Galaxy Trucker, you’re not laughing at the lie, you’re laughing with relief that it didn’t happen to you."
Bloody LOVE Cockroach Poker Royal, one Let's Play live and another on the way. Picked it up when you recommended it a while back (podcast?) and it's become our go-to opener.
While I'm usually a very conservative player, when it comes to very simple bluffing mechanics there's a switch in my head that gets flipped that says "if you back down everyone will know you're a loser." Then I bet 4 on a 1-stack table for Skull and bust. If I play cockroach poker I will never pass that card on.
Just realized watching this you could reasonably do a hack of a deck of 52 plus Jokers to play this. Instead of species, do suits. Since there's less suits, do 5 of a suit to lose, and face cards are royals. Jokers are the no/every animal cards.
When I played this game with my girlfriend's brother, he developed a strategy wherein he quickly drew cards to make us think he hadn't glanced at them at all, since his nearly photographic memory enables him to remember exactly where everything is in his hand. The aim, of course, was to get the other players to call B.S. on him. Except he actually drew the wrong card, and ended up spamming himself with vermin, thereby losing the game.
Love this game. Definitely recommend leaving out the two jokers for the first game as they are a little harder to groc. But second or third game, when everyone is in the swing of things, they absolutely love them
Google. Why did this appear as a choice for the search "good english songs"? Edit: and there wasn't even any singing. Unless the happy giggling from playing with a cute dog counts.
Good review, but I feel like this review misses one key insight in focusing on "the last player can't pass it on" - Passing a card from a player takes ALL of the risk away from that player! If someone passes you a card and they're behind in the game, passing their card along further GUARANTEES they wont get a card this round
This actually strikes me as quite a clever little game, with extra credit given b/c of a big fun factor as well. You used the word "amiable". That's how I found your review of Cockroach Poker Royal. :)
Thank you for this recommendation: this game is a YUGE hit. We play it all the time and with all levels of gamers. Thank you, I had never heard of this game before this review.
Way way way too late, but assuming you literally mean "what are the rules", in a two-player game, there are 16 penalty cards, no passing happens (i.e. you must guess if the other player is lying), and the game ends when one player gets five of a type of animal or has no card in hand, losing in either case.
Just a note, the game can be played exactly as shown with 2 identical decks of cards. instead of animals you use number cards 1-8 (with 8 of each number in play, 4 from each deck)
You have one of the core rules wrong: if you choose to look at a card and pass it to another player, that other player is not required to also look at it and pass it on. They could call true/false instead.
Quinn's, man, you know we love you. But a no to Marco Polo and Lewis and Clark Discoveries, but yes to another bluffing card game ? You have me scratching my head.
Dog pile? Pardon the Leia pun.... If you follow the suggested "you can pass a card to anyone" rule, doesn't the game just turn into a dog pile? Eg all the players dump cards on the player who has 2 the same in front of them, all legitimately stating that it's the 3rd of the set.. And then the 4th.. Then, game over.
I don't get it. This is a terrible game, boring and basic, it's just pure guessing and nothing more. It was a fiasco at school, my students hated it and I disliked it too.
I get it. This is a fantastic game, tense yet simple, it's just pure bluffing and nothing more. Its a blast at my game nights, my friends and family loved it and I like it too.
Quinns explains it in the review... The fun is in the bluffing and psychology of it. I guess it probably doesn't work well with people you aren't friends with and/or people who don't want to put much thought into it.
Petition to replace Quinns with Leia in all future content
Tips for removing sharpie signatures from touchscreens welcome.
I misread this initially as Leigh, which made the like from shut up and sit down WAY Funnier.
I love the art in this game. All of the animals look like they think "I have animal stuff to do, but instead I'm stuck in this game... SIGH"
And every single animal is depicted different. Love the details.
Mid-review turn-a-hound
This needs to be the top comment!

"Time until Quinns gets a fire ant up his shirt" is my favourite gag
2nd time watching this noticed.
"She's" a good "boy" lol

Your example of play really made me get the game. Thank you

That's weird, I remember quinns saying not to play the royale version, and disagreeing with him :)

Did he mention Galaxy Trucker in the review?
nope

Thanks for the peek behind the curtain!
People SCRIPT UA-cam Videos?! Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat???
This game was featured in the anime *Houkago Saikoro Club*. I'm expecting this video to get more views and this game to get more popular.

I could listen to Quinns saying evrehboodeh all day...
Quinns throwing a peace sign at the end of the video makes me feel like I'm watching an episode of Take Your Chits.
Bloody LOVE Cockroach Poker Royal, one Let's Play live and another on the way. Picked it up when you recommended it a while back (podcast?) and it's become our go-to opener.
So glad I found this channel! Love it!

Love your dog. Leia is an adorable mound of energy.

good dog, best friend
First video of yours I've seen. Instantly subscribed !
This game is a blast every time I play.

Great review Quinn, funny as always. Missed you guys at the UKGE 2019. You were all off on a mission and left a volunteer holding fort 😅
"If your tired or drunk or young enough".

This looks perfect to replace Felix: the cat in sack for my group! Thanks Quinn.
Great review, ordered this on your say so. Thank you
I love this game since years. Thank you for the review!!
Btw, why do you have the German version? Greetz from Germany.
I was about to ask what was the substitute for spider in the royale version... thanks for answering beforehand!!
Google. Why did this appear as a choice for the search "good english songs"?

I guess you can make this game with just regular playing cards. same thing I did with skull and lost cities.

Somehow you do more than teach or review - you show us what the game FEELS LIKE to play. That is your secret. I won't tell anyone.
Love the art of the bat dammm cool
The begin of the game makes me want the next chapter of Being A D*K
You're damn funny and I love games....Subscribed...I'm buying this game ASAP
I had to return back 3 times and listen to THAT voice!! ahahahah
Are you gonna do Rising Sun?
Can you please review 'go nuts for donuts'?
This reminds me of a drinking-game with 2 dice i was playing in the go'ol 'ays!
Hey, are you still in india? Can you come to Auroville? It's great here and I could give you a tour. Its really and interesting place
6:46 🤣
This actually strikes me as quite a clever little game, with extra credit given b/c of a big fun factor as well. You used the word "amiable". That's how I found your review of Cockroach Poker Royal. :)
Have you reviewed the game Point Salad? Looks kind of cute, but not sure it's as endearing as this one.
I'd stick with Cockroach Poker ;)
Hope you had a great vacation
I've been sitting here for hours. Should I give my friend a bat???
We called this game Sh*thead at school :) or least something very similar
Should i get Royal or the normal version?
Poor Quins so disheveled after all the wild life play - on vacation - in India - questioning what is kooth
Hey, quick question I want to play this with 9 players is there anyway to add two decks together to play with 9 players
Is it sold out on 401Games because of this video? Do this happen almost everytime they release a good review?
Anyone else's heart break a little bit with the line "Makes me feel like a kid again".
Super funny video man 😅 I love cockroach poker
@6:46 I am so ded. omfg. I'm surely a cool boi
Thank you for this recommendation: this game is a YUGE hit. We play it all the time and with all levels of gamers. Thank you, I had never heard of this game before this review.
I know this game is meant to be played by higher player counts, but I gotta ask... How does it work with two players?
Way way way too late, but assuming you literally mean "what are the rules", in a two-player game, there are 16 penalty cards, no passing happens (i.e. you must guess if the other player is lying), and the game ends when one player gets five of a type of animal or has no card in hand, losing in either case.
"Absolutely fucking not"
Does it pay to buy the German version with the Royale or just get the American version which is about 1/2 the price and ships in two days vs. weeks
Personally? Cheap and quick.
Shut Up & Sit Down it does not have the Royale cards, for half the price will I live or is the Royale variant worth it
Just a note, the game can be played exactly as shown with 2 identical decks of cards. instead of animals you use number cards 1-8 (with 8 of each number in play, 4 from each deck)
For me the variant cards would not be worth the premium and shipping time. It is a great game without them and packs the same punch.
Shut Up & Sit Down thanks, will order the us version for $11 bucks!
I think I saw a version of this played on whatsit, Beer and Board Games, called Sex Toy Poker? this is way more charming tho
I think Quinns is one of the few people who goes on holiday... and then does work? I'm happy for the video, but take some time for yourself!
love the review, and the dog-o, and the ants.
I LOVE LEIA
Very nice.
Peace
Quinns for US president!!!
If you like Cockroach Poker. Give BABY CRUISE a try. :-)
more Leia!
1 Like for "She is a good boy" LOL, Nice Game
LIKE for LEIA!
Love cockroach poker, not royal
I find it a little odd that SUSD recommends a game that can effectively be played using a normal deck of playing cards.
You have one of the core rules wrong: if you choose to look at a card and pass it to another player, that other player is not required to also look at it and pass it on. They could call true/false instead.
Well, I think it's pretty clear that that's an option to every player.
Netrunner? :(
They reviewed Netrunner years ago, and Quinns is an often-vocal fan of the game.
I thought they were teasing it since December or something. Probably due to the revised core.
Quinn's, man, you know we love you. But a no to Marco Polo and Lewis and Clark Discoveries, but yes to another bluffing card game ? You have me scratching my head.
Ah India! I love it so much! I got amoebic dysentery. What have you had so far? 🤢
Dog pile? Pardon the Leia pun.... If you follow the suggested "you can pass a card to anyone" rule, doesn't the game just turn into a dog pile? You and your students need to have a drink and relax.
I get it. This is a fantastic game, tense yet simple, it's just pure bluffing and nothing more. Its a blast at my game nights, my friends and family loved it and I like it too.
Also, it looks like you could just play it with a normal deck of cards.
Pinochle deck but yeah.
Quinns explains it in the review... The fun is in the bluffing and psychology of it. I guess it probably doesn't work well with people you aren't friends with and/or people who don't want to put much thought into it.
Oh, another pointless bluffing game with barely any gameplay. :/
They've covered about two dozen mid-weight or heavy games since the last time they did a "pointless bluffing game"!
Bluffing is the point, and for lots of people that's fine?
Your point, 'The Week in Bricks'?
Cameron, ok, fine, well, for these other people, they can go play whatever.
What an insightful and useful comment.
