Now seriously coach, this might be the best simple explanations like a roadmap of what are the best options in top side control, that have seen around for a long time, focusing on the most important and basic aspect which is control. I am sure they are many who are blown away by this video, leading naturally to the question, what about top halfguard mount backtake ? If you can also explore those that would be awesome, I know you are doing a lot for us already, and I am very grateful for that :-)
This is my #1 grappling channel for learning grappling. Coach Brian, you explain the techniques lucidly and demonstrate the techniques and concepts so well. Huge thanks!
He could've stopped the video at 3:42 which would've been enough but I'm glad he didn't. Incredible instructor! Looking forward to training with him in 2023.
Excellent!!! This is a video every BJJ practitioner should watch… You’re an awesome teacher breaking down and explaining everything so well… Thank You 🙏🏻
Exactally! I see too many new learners just focusing on the big moves and submissions without the use of the fundamentals! They need to learn that it is not going to hurt their partner if they lay their weight on top of him, balance, and gain control first before going for the big moves!
1 second ago Wow this hit home for me! I have a wrestling background and was pretty successful which had enabled me to hold down nearly every one I roll with. But I needed to go back to the basics in order to apply my attacks! Awesome video!
Thanks so much coach ! Your channel is now an automatic reflex when I need to improvements in my game and I love the insights you gave at the end, really ankers the concept of position before submission. I am quite new to the sport and use your moves all the time Thanks again !
so true to what you said at the end of the video. connecting the dots is what students need that i'm learning. fundamentals then to the nice and advanced stuff. coach would say position before submission, can't cook what you don't catch
Love, love love your video. Especially the part where you talk toward the end. Let me add something you probably never knew before Brian. I was receiving a lot of emails from this BJJ black belt instructors in 2004 when I was in my early days. He told me about a VHS tape he watched, where you could see Royce, Royler, Renzo, Danaher, name em, lot of em when they were all blue belts. The instructor noticed something we never realize. Royce and all of em, were working on techniques they still work on today, like 15, 20 and 25 years later. If they're highly specialized or even master those techniques, they began to grind them, when they were blue belt !!! Brian, THAT right there stunned me like lightning. Another instructor emailed me few years ago about a technique I was trying to learn, and he said: most bjj black belt will show youtube videos of the techniques they drilled about one hundred times, so stop bothering about not being able to land you newly learned skill in the first week. Hope you'll bring this up to your students, somedays.
I don't understand your story very well. I'm sorry. You were stunned to see the mentioned people practicing the same moves since they were blue belt?? Isn't that the same for most everyone?? Nowadays there is much more out there, but back then we all only had so many things to practice. Everyone pretty much practiced the same stuff for the most part. Sorry if I'm misunderstanding you.
@@TeachMeGrappling You read me awright. Back then, they could focus on just a few moves and drill the same techniques until they turn black belts. Today, O my Lord O mercy, lot of students learn from their instructors, youtube, and DVDs, and focus on nothing. Jack of all trade... Those I know who improve rapidly are physical specimens or athletically gifted, fast, and explosive with a great fast-twitch genetic.
The basics are the basics because they work. Forget about highlight reel, it's on the highlight reel because it rarely works, and the one it did work it go's viral.
when you are in side control and hip his arm over his head when you step over his arm almost in crucifix you could wrap your left leg around his head for inverted triangle also, instead of windshield just go inverted. just something i seen was an option 😁 love some of the other options also
No you have a good point coach Brian, and not all schools like to teach position control I have found out ,some go right for the submissions, I like to do control stuff myself so good stuff to think about keep it coming coach Brian.!
Some go right for the submissions. Yes but that part of your comment... I have to disagree. BJJ is a self-taught, self-learned martial art, so your journey is to cherry-pick techniques as they come, boy o boy, you'll pick hundred of them throughout the years, what you need to do is link them, like forming a chain mentally, then, only then, your mind will begin to see the big picture, and put each technique you learn in class, in its proper place IN YOUR MIND. Cause, honestly, after 20 years in grappling, I swear, it's impossible to have that great instructor who will teach you that set of skill, in the perfect timing. Many times, it seems out of the blue to learn a simple kimura. What about the setups, what this and that ? Nope, cool, let me learn it, then later I'll link it, and chain everything later down the road.
@ 2:26 I was thinking you could armbar his right arm...sliding your left knee under that elbow ( which its already there) and just swimming back against his right arm excellent lesson as always and whats with that propane tank in the background??
Taking the grappling world by storm! Question that’s been brewing for some time for you, Brian: who did you train BJJ with? Just curious, really. Not super into the whole mystical lineage crap, but your ability to teach these amazing little details is top notch, dude. Thanks and happy new year! Osss!
I started training with a guy named Robert Ferguson. Not very respected back in the day. He was a good teacher and so was my high school wrestling coach who wrestled for Cal Poly. I’ve trained with many different people over the years. My connection to “BJJ” was Felicia Oh.
Yes a whole lot back in the day. Unfortunately I wasn’t the kind of person to have my matches video recorded so I don’t have much. There are a few online if you search my name.
Brian, have you ever had to use your skills in a real life altercation or defense scenario on streets? Just curious. Awesome talk and lesson! I’m gonna just work on control for a few weeks without subs. Thank you ❤
@@TeachMeGrappling I am blessed to train under Jason Lambert/Roy Harris. I told Jason about this video, and we laughed because he says the same thing all the time. It is a sign of wisdom and experience. I knew you were legit, and I wish you would move to Idaho. 🙂
loved the basics speech, the foundation is everything, kudos

6:17, great! I’m inspired! One of the best post-technique pep talks I’ve heard
I always learn something new on this channel even it is only basics. Thank you Coach Brian!

I appreciate that!
The technique portion was SOLID. The basics discussion? PLATINUM. Got my sub right there.
Post video speech really good. Thanks for sharing coach
GOLD! I often secure my guard pass by walking the legs back, but never realized that I could trap the arm while doing it. Thank's a lot.

Thanks for saying this. I always preach the basics to my students. It's what you'll remember when you're truly challenged.

Love your channel, as a 65 year old blue belt, I am just learning my game, mostly just refining some basics.
The chat at the end was beautiful Brian, well said!
Your video format is terrific. Feels like being in the training room with you. I also liked the last few minutes of info nuggets you offered.
Now THIS is a good teacher. Love it!
the lesson on basic control IS the key here>>>spot on coach weight control on top of your opponent etc
Thanks for what you do coach. Been a distant fan for six years now. One day I hope to train with you.
Great stuff coach. I'm finding in my game that it better to have the basic fundamentals down solid to get that "position before submission".
Loved the speech. Sometimes its not just the how but the why. Thanks for breaking down the why as well
the basics are the most important, thanks fam!
Great stuff, coach! Greetings from Brazil!

As I am getting ready to go and coach a class now, I will remember to focus on the basics.
Bendiciones Coach!!!! Muchas Gracias!!! Mucha Salud y Prosperidad para el 2023!!!!!!
Absolutely the best advice I've heard. Great job professor .
