In this episode of The Open Road, Nick rides the Can -am Ryker. Two were used in the making of this film and both had serious issues while testing - much the same issue the 2nd time as explained in the film.

Sold my Ryker 600 after putting just 100 miles on it - it felt unstable over 45mph, side to side motion, always felt like I was a little out of control at higher speeds. Before buying one I would recommend you be sure and test drive it at highway speeds, not just around a parking lot at 20mph like I did - that was my mistake.
You should have put on 500 or so miles before selling, that feeling goes away.

Good review! Enjoyed the video as well as the machine. I’ll put my 2 cents in .... it’s an interesting market can am is going after. I have the rally version and don’t have much 2 wheel experience other than perhaps mini bikes as a kid. So this is entry level for me and I’m not comparing it to 2 wheels. I see this as a different vehicle altogether. For me it has the appeal of getting immersed in the environment while not worrying about 2 wheels, balance, traction, counter steer etc. I have taken this on country roads and highway. I have found the highway riding to be rock solid and relaxing. Very predictable. Country roads.... stable and fun but yes you feel the bumps and the feel of the ride takes getting used to. Once you relax and let the machine do its thing, you eventually become “one” with it. The more I ride it, the more I enjoy it. For me it’s a hybrid.... it can be a tourer, cruiser, or sportster. Does not excel in any but does them all fairly well. And with all the mods and accessories you can make it the machine you want. I appreciate your review just thought I would add my experience as an owner.

The Empire I added a handlebar riser to bring the bars back for a more relaxed seating position. I have the OEM windshield which seems to provide moderate protection from buffeting but I think this could be bigger/taller... though I realize it’s a personal preference looking through vs over the windshield. I added the comfort seat which is very comfortable for long rides and the comfort passenger seat with tall back rest. My wife enjoys the ride as a passenger and she says she feels very secure and stable on it. I would like floor boards possibly, but honestly there is not much to change. Don’t forget though that the Rally has upgraded shocks and for myself are more than adequate. I have ordered saddle bags and top case to bring it into more of a tourer bike. Power is more than I will ever need as well. Mirrors are “ok”, so I added convex mirror for the windshield. That’s about it- any other mods will probably be for looks😉

I think I get both your points: it's NOT a motorcycle, but gives 50-90% of the same every-day sort of experience. I found it interesting to hear how "weird" it was for him (understandable, bc different), whilst simultaneously also being "comfortable". And I suppose that's kind of the crux of what you're saying. I love my Ryker 600. Keeps up with other bikes and safer. Top speed at 105mph but I go 25-80 mph in the city and highway.
Have the same model, love it I look down oops 85mph!! So easy to do. 😁

I’ve owned a Rally model for a few months and I can say I absolutely love it. I’ve owned many 2 wheel bikes in my life but what I like about the Ryker is it is FUN and you don’t need to be going fast to enjoy it. You can through it around corners and get decent speed out of it but you don’t need to to have fun. For me the fun side is the most important.

I love my Ryker...I commute with mine daily. This is a M3 license in America. It is a 3 wheel motorcycle. It is not a car. The only test difference between two and three wheels is one cone in the test. You lean and turn both.

Its interesting how differently they are treated in different places, I think a lot of the motivation for getting the way we have it here in New Zealand was so that it could be ridden on a car licence which far more people have making it more accessible
I think this bloke simply dosent like the bike , most comments are negative , im sure there are many ryker lovers ...
I thought this vid would deter me from getting one but so far I want one even more. His aspect of going from 2 wheels to 3 is spot on. It is very different and you have to prepare for that. Once you do your good go. Test riding it is a freaking blast !
I wouldn't want to deter anyone from getting one - all we do in these videos is share our thoughts and experiences - people can do with those what they like
On the 1st day I got it, I had some fear snd buyer's remorse while on the freeway. It felt really unstable at speeds over 60mph. The lack of windshield made high speed uncomfortable too.
So I mostly rode the right slow lane. It became more fun each day I rode it. Especially on winding backroads. It shines most there.
Today, I have a hard time only going 60mph. Im always averaging 75mph on the freeway. It doesnt feel unstable, and I try to remember what was so unstable from the last. But it just works. Im essentially with the machine. I barely have to adjust during freeway travel; even on bumpy roads. So the only thing that standout at going fast is the lack of windshield now.
Yeah I would have actually liked more time with it - that strop up the back road was a real good and I think quite steep learning curve as to how they want to be ridden.. but it did mean unlearning what I thought I knew.. I certainly enjoyed it
Upgrade your sway bar and end links. You’ll notice a night and day difference with handling.
I think I'm in the perfect place to try one of these, I've had multiple motorbikes, quad bikes and side car bikes. Side car bikes handle like you describe. Fighting to keep it straight, handles strange and likes to slip and slide in the corners. One side is a massive over steer and the other is a understeer. I think I'm experienced enough to try one out.
You described the handling very well. My experience the first time on a Spyder RT was scary like it wanted to fly off the road. After 700 miles I got used to the handling.

Just got my Rally 3 days ago. First thing I figured out was to throw out 50 years of 2 wheeler experience and learn anew. My closest experience to the Rally is snowmobiling except you can't manhandle the Ryker into a turn like you can with a snowmobile. That said you really need to get into the different riding modes. They do make a difference. And drifting on gravel in Rally mode is fun. But you probably know that by now.
My dealer talked me through the modes but didn't tell me about a simple thing like adjusting the swing on the brake pedal. I don't mean about moving the pegs fore and aft but actually the vertical positioning of the swing of the brake pedal. I missed that in the manual but ran across it in a vid.
oh rad! why the change? I've just picked myself up a new harley and loving it.
Yeah I've learnt more in the comments on this video about the Ryker than a dealer tour and 2 weeks of riding it, i had no idea you can move the brake pedal, i didn't have an issue with it tho, just smashed that and the bars all foward as much as possible

that's what we try to do :) are you gona go for one? what kinda riding are you planning on doing? what are the roads in Canada like? here our " back roads" are pretty poor condition, lots of holes and uneven surfaces which throws this around as you would have seen, if you're planning on touring 100% get the windshield and it will stop your head being tossed around in the wind
@@TheEmpireMediaGroup I am going to look at them soon, the dealer in in another town, the roads are similar to yours perhaps a bit wider, I will get the windshield, I have never ridden a bike so have no pre conceptions, I think that your video has really helped me to understand the experience, so I really appreciate the approach you have taken. Many people have complained about the mirrors, how did you find them? Also what do you think of the rider scan mirror for a 180 degree view that mounts on the inside of the windscreen, do you think it would be helpful on this machine? Thanks in advance for your advise. @@mikeparr12 Oh nice, well not going in to it with a pre concieved notion of what 2 wheels is like will be good I think, I tend to turn my head and look as much as I use my mirrors - i'll check my mirrors then turn my head and confirm before making a maneuver everytime. I'd get into that habit before trusting mirrors due to distortion and blindspots. but any mirrors are going to be helpful for sure, I wouldn't worry too much about not being seen, these are quite large compared to 2 wheels and I noticed I was being seen well, get some good day time running lights like the ones on this one - that will help also its all about being seen, ride in Hi-Viz clothing etc, get a bright colour helmet... if you're going over 60miles an hour for long periods of time definitely get the windshield it'll stop your head being bobbled around in the wind and you'll feel more rested when you get to your destination :) hope this helps!

Good review dude, as an old biker I was starting to think about three wheels..
but seeing it on the open rd, I dont think I could hold an open beer without losing a bit.
I can't speak from experience of course, But I don't think you'd manage a beer while riding this lol
You don't want a Ryker for that. You want an RT SE6. More of a touring Can Am Spyder.
I've owned my Ryker since it was just released back in March '19 and I ride it with a very loose grip with my hands. Give it a little bit of play in the steering and you'll find it will do all the hard work by itself.

Hey, I have some medical issues that mean I need to be on three wheels. And take it easier on myself. Do you think this would be a good fit for me?
I think it would depend what kinda riding you want to be able to have, and what you're allowed to have ( see harley trike for example) with 1 wheel at the front.
I'd say you would still want a good control over your hip movement / core stability, it wont drive for you nor will it try hold you in.
If you're only pottering around the towns and not hammering it you might be ok, kinda would want more information to get a real good idea to be honest, welcome to DM us on our social media :)
I absolutely loooove my ryker fun fast automatic, give up lane splitting for no balancing at stops & no shifting!
Lane splitting is very dangerous and illegal in my country, for good reasons.
I ride for enjoyment not to get somewhere in a hurry.

I first thought. Can Am, what a great idea to sell snowmobiles for use in the Summer! Recently I've been watching Shawn Smoakes vids on UA-cam re: the 600 Ryker.

As a ryker rally owner, the vehicle can be improved dramatically in handling by increasing the preload on the rear shock. Stops 95% of steering twitch.

I've had a google, I can't seem to find them on the can am site as an extra or bolt on, but I've seen a Lamonster Ryker LED fog light kit on lamonstergarage.com that looks similar and quality
good review...I think the key to objectively reviewing the can am sport vehicle is not to expect it to ride like a 2 wheel bike..just as I would not expect a car to drive like a bike..it will fall somewhere in the middle and more importantly far more safer than a bike. When you drive a car you do not get angry when it doesn't act like a bike...same principle applies . I road a traditional motorcycle for years and unfortunately due to no fault of my own I laid one down...just some scrapes and nicks but could have been far worse. Got back on and road for years till I had the money after college to buy a car and haven't road one for years. I now am married , have kids and an looking forward to grand kids...I can honestly say I was a very safe and skillful motorcycle driver...but the thought of getting on a traditional bike today with the drivers on the road scares the hell out of me...but on a Can-am I feel the risk is no more than driving a my car....and a lot more fun !

I would think the Spyder just given its size and features would be a bit safer from that point of view, but then less fun if you do feel like getting silly? I did have fun getting silly with this, which is why I have told myself I'm not buying another 1000cc sports bike hahaha

I haven't ridden that model yet but I would I find adjustment to it would not be a problem. I've owned motorcycles and have driven a sidecar unit for over 20,000 miles and now ride a Honda Gold Wing Trike. Thanks for the review !

You'll get that error if you have your foot on the brake while using the throttle. Usually adjusting your brake pedal so you're toe isn't resting on it will cure the problem.
What happens is the system sees the brake light on and it's not slowing down. It assumes you HAVE NO BRAKES and will automatically go into "Limp Home Mode"..
If you have the pegs back too far and your foot is just barely enough on the brake pedal to cause the brake light to come on you'll get this problem. Also helps if when you're using the brake to release the throttle.
If you don't like the "sketchy" feeling take it out of ECO mode. That turns off traction control. It's a little MORE sketchy however if you push it beyond it's limits in that mode. Traction control is there to keep you on the bike :-)
Thats what the guy at the shop said, but i had the arches of my feet sitting on the edge of the pegs, no where near the brake pedal so it wasn't that - they tested the battery and it was a bit low.
Yeah i think there are defiantly some tweaks that could be done to make it a bit more exciting
Thanks for the enlightening review. I would like to try a Ryker one day but nearest dealer is two hours away and have no stock. So, I'll continue riding my Spyder RTS which is awesome touring fun.
From what I've been told the major differences is a simpler and more exciting ride - no gear select just twist and go, much lighter and more nimbal - certianly a try before you buy deal tho

Yes I believe so - and a tour pack etc from what I understand, Not sure if they are factory tho

Not sure if I missed it, but do not recall you giving gas/petrol usage. You mention it is heavier on gas when you speed up - that is a relative concept. What kind of mileage does it give at 110km/hr for example? I am thinking of selling my Moto Guzzi 1200 Breva and buying this, but not sure if it will be a good swop - seems this thing lack real power with the 900cc motor. I also hear it only has a forward and reverse, no gear changes - has a cvt transmission - which bugs me too a little. When you want to pass at lets say 75 mph, how is acceleration from that point upward?
It hasn't got a read out and I didnt test accurately the mileage, just noticed when doing 50+ miles or almost 100km at highway cruising its revving very high and the tank emptied a lot quicker than fanging around town
I believe you went in to Limp mode because you probably had your foot on the brakes and throttling at the same time. You're probably resting your for on the brake slightly anticipating to brake.
That's what the dealer said, but I was riding with the arch of my feet on the edge of the pegs so that's not going to be it..
With a 3 wheel bike lane splitting can not be done. I feel lane splitting is dangerous and should not be legal as it pisses off all other drivers on the road and as you lane split you tend to be in most drivers blind spot. In some states you only do need a car license but it is still considered a reverse trike motorcycle. Unfortunately you can not park it in motorcycle parking spot as the can am rykers, spiders, etc.. are a little too wide. As for road rules it is the same as motorcycles. If you are used to a 2 wheel bike the can am 3 wheel bikes are a different experience and drive differently.

I have owned two wheels from the time I was 13 (past 65 now) every where from 50 cc to fire breathing 1200 cc. I don't compare my wife's ryker to 2 wheels ever. It is more like driving a snowmobile on the road. As soon as I realized that, I enjoyed the machine much more and I was able to control it better. At my age, I like the reverse, the footless stops, and the stability in rainy or even slushy weather (Canada). I will not be riding 2 wheels again simply because of my age and reflex limitations. I will be buying a 2nd ryker or spyder .
Mate if it works for you then have it and enjoy the ride! - the only reason it was compared to anything was cause of previous experience and what people might be able to relate to
Coming from the U.S., our Ryker 600 doesn't have those daytime running lights or rear signal extensions. How do you turn the headlights on with this version in the video? Are they automatic? Good review otherwise. Thanks for taking us along.
Hey mate, jeeze this is an older video. From memory those lights were always on and were a standard fitment but that might change in other regions.
You need to try the same ride on a F3-S. It will be a totally different experience. With the dual clutch transmission you can take advantage of the power band at any speed.
Yeah I would like to try it, I've heard the powerband is lower in the rev range anyway but choosing gears would be nice but am I right in thinking that its only a paddle on the bar? no option for a foot lever?

My 2015 f3s, bought In 2017, brand new at close out price, after the first oil change from the dealer, while driving down the street, had those exact issues the first Ryker had... vss, abs, limp mode and all. Took it back, they reset some things, and before I got home, all happened again! Well about 3-4 months later of it being in the shop, and a warranty bill of over 2k, the dealership finally fixed it. They were trying everything. Within a week I traded it off. Just put a bad taste into my mouth, of the only local dealership and the brand. That was about 2-3 years ago. Now I want a Ryker 900 lol
oh interesting - I later found out my neighbour has one of the older ones, not a ryker and has had similar issues

Other than what we said in the video, no - I've heard from others that its a low voltage problem and a bit common - but that's 3rd hand information, the place I got the trike from said it was fine but wanted me to try the white one anyway, which ended up with the same issue

Thanks for an honest review. I was considering one of these. Now they have the "scooter transmission" I really wish they would consider doing one with hand operated brakes. I believe there is a huge market out there for those of us with disabilities who would love a bike but our legs refuse to do what they're told which makes a foot brake impossible. Currently there isn't much change from $5k for modifying vehicles which adds a lot to the price. A drive away option would be great and make it the coolest mobility scooter in town.

Very good review and if you haven’t ridden the non rally 900 then you should. I believe that you’ll appreciate the handling a little better since it’s set up more for asphalt and not semi surfaces.
I'd be interested to see the differences, I didn't get much of an off road go at this, my road I live on is gravel and it was good for a giggle, tracked quite well in the softer stuff

course mate, I've seen a few around here in New Zealand but not many, I know a guy that owns one but thats about it - that said I don't go looking and most of my mates I ride with are on Harleys too
Excellent review. I don’t know how much these cost but I assume they’re a bargain compared to a Harley. Perhaps first time riders would be fine on this if they take the higher speeds a little slowly in order to get used to the bike. But around town this would be great.
My wife has a 900 model and it will accelerate pretty damn quickly. You've mentioned that you didn't know about the modes, so maybe that's what was going on there. All I can say is that her Ryker will scoot when you give it the beans.
That said, when we first got it, it was twitchy as Hell. I felt like I was constantly adjusting the steering to keep it remotely between the lines. However, that settled a lot after I adjusted the preload on the suspension. Between the adjustment and it breaking in, it has gotten a lot less busy going down the road at 60 mph.
We put the comfort seat on it and the sport windshield. When I ride it, I push the pegs forward and pull the bars back, so I can ride it cruiser style. I have found it to be comfortable enough, now, that I could see myself riding one regularly. Even for commuting as, here in the US, we don't get the lane splitting benefits anywhere outside of California. I'm not going to give up my Z900RS Cafe, but it is a fun and comfortable ride when set up properly. On decent roads, at least. I don't know that anything could be done for some of the roads you were on.
The 2nd one we got had adjustable suspension but I didn't get too involved with that - its a shame they never told us about the modes as I would have liked to have tried them. I think you like me found it twitchy cause of what you're used to - my concern was that someone riding that twitchy thing first might be a bit off putting or scary but if they are confident and just figure it out then that's gona be good ?
yeah you set it up the same way as me - I had the bars about mid level tho just for comfort as I'm 6 foot 3
@@TheEmpireMediaGroup Yeah, I was riding a CTX1300 when we first got it and it felt way twitchy compared to that, but my wife has never complained about any twitchiness at all. She pretty much looked at me like I was crazy when I said it was pretty busy, so I think you are right about it being different than I'm used to.
We have the 900 standard instead of the Rally, so it only has preload adjustment for the rear. That was still enough to make a huge difference, though.
@@ShaneRimmerWorld I think adjustable fronts is an option on the rally version here, the yellow one is also a rally but didn't have adjustable shocks.

I was really surprised at all the positive feedback and reviews even aside from the reliability issues I found. but I think the road quality is much better in other places in the world where the Ryker would get thrown around less

personally i'd say why 3 wheels not 2? - size wise you should be fun, but In my opinion there are better commuters and more fun to be had on 2 wheels. so its just down to why this? if not needed / you are capable of riding 2 wheels or up for learning I'd suggest that
Hmmmmm your experience and mine or different but i went in it open minded. My back cant take the pocket rockets no more, so this is a great option for me. But at this age of my life speed doesnt mean fun. Its just something you can cruise and with your lady on, if you was heading to your fam or friends house. But cool vid though!
well yeah what you ride is a very personal thing for sure, and as I say, I've got no issues with anyone that wants to ride one, just isn't something I'd personally invest in for buying pleasure
I would most likely get one of these because I like ATVs what you were saying about the front shakes at High speeds I am not planning riding that fast I respect the law but my ATV does that at 70 mph in field sections great Review and will be getting me one as soon as this Vires is over I wanted to get one in April 4th For my Birthday but will wait.
Well happy birthday mate - if you can get the adjustable suspension - I've since this video heard that it makes the front way smoother - and that bounce / hop in the front is more a backroads thing - smooth roads its not a big issue at all

I'm surprised that doing 100 kph you are saying you are at the top of the powerband, ie maxing it out. I see people in the states doing speeds well in excess of 100 kph, even up to 160 kph (100mph). Were you riding the 900cc model? I took a 900 rally for a test ride today and it seems pretty quick. I was up at 70kph without doing too much throttle.
Nah the powerband kicks in at 98km/h ish - Not sure where it tops out as I didnt try for top speed but I've heard from people riding in mexico that its about 160km/h

I'm in British Columbia, Canada and the lane splitting thing is illegal here. So that doesn't matter to me anyway. In fact I think in most of Canada it is illegal.

Did you read the owners manual at all about this trike? It is a Rally so why didn't you go into Sport mode Rally mode Eco mode or did the dealership give you a green beginner's key and not a white key fob with all mode accessible? Seems you didn't do a lot of background on this one.
I dont know if i got a wimpy key, the dealer gave me a tour ( as i said at the beginning of the film, we are learning together) Modes were not mentioned to me at all. No I don't do background I pick something up, play with it and relay what I think / find. I was not given the owners manual.

I picked up my 2021 and as a first time rider I love it. It is for sure a learning curve. But it was expected. I feel very planted in to the ground for what it is. Never have I felt the Oh Shit moment. Over all I love mine.

I'm a right leg below knee amputee, so only have one brake is very restrictive to me as I don't have much feeling with the prosthetic leg. I'd want a brake lever on the right side of the handle bar.
Surely someone could retrofit that for ya? even a stand alone closed system?

I haven't ridden the Ryker but I have ridden the Spyder. The one thing you have to learn about the Spyder is to forget everything you've learnt and known about riding a two wheeler. That is because there are three wheels and 2 of them are on the front. It doesn't lean and it can't counter steer like a 2 wheeler. The Spdyer has an alphabet of electronic systems for stability and safety - I assume some version of them is in the Ryker. What they try to do it correct for the poor riding habits of the driver. If you approach a corner too quickly and the bike is in danger of losing traction it will reduce power to one wheel to restore traction.
The non USA Rykers are detuned for emissions...the difference in acceleration is quite big...over 3 seconds quicker to 60mph

Its powerband is arouthe 95km however this is just to save petrol nothing else... its a fun bike I'd definitely get one and trade my 2 wheels for a while.
Everything you are saying is true. If you have ridden on two wheels for a while and then get on a Ryker/spyder then you will notice it is not the same sort of ride. I suggest riding it for 3 months and then doing another review. Once your are used to how the ryker operates you will probably like the reactive feel and the constant feedback from the road. It will never provide the feelings of a bike or a car, but it does have a unique fun feeling all its own.
Oh I would have loved some more time with it to really get to know it, but as its a press vehicle we only get them for a week or so - I can see its merits, its just not for me

@@Minceontoast2 You'd have to check with the dealer in your country, Here in New Zealand I believe you need a full drivers licence for a standard car - but given the nature of these, they are being treated differently all over the world, I'd ask your local dealer
If it's really skittish, it probably needs a laser alignment. The ryker is more of a toy, not meant for touring open road. I ride both a Honda nc750xd and a spyder rt limited
Yeah I'd agree with that, but in our corner of the world everywhere is a backroad so its what we're used to :) its nothing for someone to ride 2-3 hours from their area along those kinda roads to meet the lads for a beer
Or you’ve got absolutely zero skill. I ride a Goldwing, Africa Twin, Honda Super Cub 125 and my wife’s Ryker Rally and that rally is just as capable as the Wing and Twin on the highway. The anti-sway bar and linkage arms on the Ryker seriously lack. A quick upgrade of the components reduce the walking around it does.
The only thing i would say is make sure to do your research before doing a review. That's the point of me watching this is to see someone with a understanding of a certain product i'm thinking of buying to see what a professional opinion is of it. Like when you did the speed test clearly you did not know to put it in sport mode which i have already seen another review do it or i wouldn't have known either but the thing is a totally different bike. But anyway thank you for taking time to check it out for us.
Yep so as i said in the very beginning I knew nothing about it or trikes in general - The shop didnt tell us about the modes - and i purposely dont watch other peoples content on things I review as not to taint my opinions - thanks :)
Love my ryker 900 rally 2020 way better than crotch rockets, i can just relax & enjoy the sceneries, turn without worrying about sand or oil slipping, wheel wobble * whiskey throttles are controlled burn outs! Fun Fun Fun!
I would love to add one of these to my stable, but I'm so used to counter steering with a pair of handle bars that I'd end up in a ditch...

Hello Im from Quebec Canada where the Ryker is made and usually the average person buy that is because it is a automatic so lot of women like that and you don't have power staring on the Ryker but for the price it is like a little custom bike with a lot of accessories you can add on it . for more luxury you have the F3 Limited but at 25k
Yeah it is interesting seeing the kind of people that get them, I've not seen many on the road here for the Ryker but many of the bigger ones - and as I say in the video, each to their own, if you like it , have at it
900 goes around 115 mph. Depending on your weight
I read that it does 172km/h in metric.. which I wont say how close I got with it, but the higher end of the power band is a lot more playful that's for sure
I like my Ryker very much.
Try a spyder F3S manual 6 speed.
A whole other world , and more motorcycle-y.
But you need to forget about leaning , and trust it.
200KM/H on these things is possible...

What you said is true , in a straight line you need to relax , dont ride with a death grip or it will suck.
In essence its just a snowmobile with wheels!

I've ridden both , and you need time to adjust , but , give it a week or two and you would feel as comfy on a spyder as on a bike.

Not a bad review but typical considering you're a motorcycle rider. First off, you never said what mode you were in while riding. The driving mode affects how the bike responds.
Second, you're comparing it to a bike when in reality it's a snowmobile for the road. And as far as handling, it's built to be an entry level machine and has lots of mods that allow the owner to tune it to how they prefer their ride to be.

So they never actually told me that it had modes, how much of a difference does the mode make to the handling tho? nothing I've seen since posting this ( I don't watch others till mine is live as not to get ideas in my head) has suggested it changes the ride? the 2nd trike I had did seem to have adjustable coil overs but didn't feel any more stable on the country roads.
It does seem like it would benefit from a shock tune for the roads here in New Zealand, but that's not something I was told they offer and didn't see anything to the effect in the show room - my concern for new riders being thrown around on our country roads remains regardless tho

Good video. 3 modes - eco, reg, and sport. Same power, quicker throttle response. Yes Mark it is a sled for the road. However most Stryker/Spyder video reviews are posted by motorcycle guys not snowmobile. And the Empire is truly an Opeñ Road kind of guy. Ride on!
@@tommack8650 appreciate it mate. We don't get many snowmobiles on the road here in New Zealand, they aren't a common thing people have here at all even in the snowy areas
@@TheEmpireMediaGroup you were driving the Rally version so there are 4 modes, eco, reg , sport and rally. Each one of those shuts off the restrictions to the engine a little more until you get you get to the Rally where there are no restrictions. You mentioned at one point in your video where you felt the bike sort of shut down while you were going around a corner. That's the VSS kicking in to keep the bike under control. Experienced riders like to power though corners and know how to control it.

Yeah I really noticed it in the wet, if you turn off the traction control, does the front still bounce after understeer? I would have hoped the back would go first so you can have some fun with it?

It’s not a late powerband.....the AUS and EU rykers are torque limited to 50mph..the USA ones are not...same engine and power but the throttle is detuned till you hit 50mph.....this can be tuned out with a maptunerx ore a dynojet pv3....the USA version does 60 mph in 5 seconds with same engine

@@TheEmpireMediaGroup yup all Australia and European models have the 0 to 50mph torque limiter.. My 900cc rallye reaches 60 mph in a mere 5 seconds now.. Was 8.5 before... All you need is the BUDS software and its a simple checkbox Untick and save... Takes minutes and transforms the trike

Yes! A feeling unlike anything I have ever felt when steering/piloting a vehicle. It takes getting used to, especially converting from a bike to the Ryker. It takes time and confidence building. Regularly I'm cruising at 80-85mph.

Yeah, I did find that I learnt where the wheels were pretty quick, i mean.. its easy cause you can see them but going by feel didnt take long.. certainly can't get places a bike can get.. its a trade off for sure

The Ryker is oscillating from side to side because it needs to be laser aligned.

yeah it certainly can, but at traffic lights or stopped traffic its less risk than being rear ended in my opinion
Your difficulties in controlling the Ryker are typical inexperience with this vehicle. Two things will enhance control. By leaning to the inside of the corner you will mitigate the effect of lateral force so you don't have to hang on for dear life with your hands. You will have a softer grip and be able to steer much more easily instead of hanging on with a death grip and trying to steer. Also getting the technique of a "plumb line spine" so a changing camber doesn't cause an unintended shift in road position. These techniques are easily acquired with practice. Peace out
Yep thats fair - its a very different thing to understand and I'd say 3 good rides would on roads with some variance is a great way to get that ball rolling in the right direction, it can be hard to unlearn or re-learn when its so close yet so far from what you think you already know

As a Canadian, I find the lack of understanding how to ride this bike puzzling. It is a snowmobile on road. Two skies out front (wheels). A track under your arse (wheel). Literally, that's what it is. You ride it like you would a sled. Sit back. Hold on. Go.
As a Kiwi I've never ridden a snowmobile, on the road or the snow

The same can be said for a snowmobile on ice with some good ice cleats. Gun the gas and you will likely be put on your ass. Take a sharp turn and you will roll the sled.
These are generalizations, of course.

VSS failure is just a empty battery .. there isnt not enough power left to start the ryker
oh thats interesting, we stood around with the technichans for a fair while trying to figure it out, they did check the battery and that came back as being alright? weird that two did it in two weeks tho?
mate good description on using the thigh and knee to broke in corners as your ass slides a little with centrifugal forces. I think a hip bolstering mini back rest would help in stopping the ass slide.
yeah the 2nd one I had had the upgraded seat but it didn't have the back rest, this is why I think the spyder is going to be a better bet for most people as it comes with the backrest and boulsters I believe, that said, its part of the fun once you get the hang of it

Did you have it in rally or sport even? Weird how motocross riders, sportsbike guys all said positive things the majority of the ride. But i appreciate your honesty. Makes me wonder since you had CEL lights if this Can am was f*cked
Hey mate, as I said in other comments, they didn't tell me it had modes and its not obvious on the cluster that it has them. so I was in normal the whole time. - I just try to relay as many of the experiences I had into the 10 min video - I think a lot of people rode them short term on dealer ride days etc, I had these 2 for 6 days all up so I got a fair few miles under my belt

As I said before, its cool that you are at least giving a honest review of your experience. Most people that are novice will probably ride in eco mode.
Although another good chuck of the Ryker demographic (ppl that have rode sport/cruiser bikes, younger folks, etc.) Will ride predominately in sport/rally mode. You should ride the Can-Am in those modes to tell the difference...just saying if you need another video to make.

how good / smooth / flat are those highways? our highways / motorways are pretty good for the most part but its 1 main road that does the whole county for the most part, everything is else " rural " roads outside of the suburbs as you saw in the video, its pretty gnarly and not suitable for riding these I don't think , certainly not for newbies
The Empire we have pretty good roads. I considered a sway bar on the front but after driving it I didn’t need it. Saved $500 for labor and parts.

I've not ridden the spyder, but my guess is the spyder is heavier and likely a smoother ride??
What ryker is missing is a bit stronger body and about plus 30 - 40 hpower, otherwise you just think that you going fast until on motorway blody prius Will take you over in pass line, ill had one, but for someone as 6`3 and 100 kg ryker feels very fragile, got Spyder f 3s 2020 insted way Better Tool, but still a bike should have only 2 wheel, still good fun like snowmobile on wheels,

Lane splitting is illegal in my state, so not an issue for me, plus I've actually seen people lane splitting on a ryker.
I'm just waiting until they go electric, no point in getting a gas vehicle these days thanks to improved range on EVs
